Derby Post Positions: Initial Musings

So, we’ve got the Derby post positions set; I’m not entirely sure why we needed a full field of twenty this year. Yes, we’re seeing a depth of talent we have not for some time, but I was rather hoping that might keep some of the Derby Fever crowd away. You can make a fantastic case for why seven or eight of them could find the winner’s circle and a pretty good one for perhaps another seven – but the ‘leftovers’ seem horribly outclassed.

I don’t think anyone has been terribly compromised by a bad post position but I was a bit surprised by some of the morning line odds. 20-1 on Chocolate Candy? The same for Papa Clem? 30-1 on Regal Ransom, but 15-1 on Desert Party in the 19 slot? I have no real argument with any of the 50-1 shots, but I will say that I would love it if the aforementioned horses stayed at double-digit odds!

I think you don’t see more of the ML below 20-1 because 50-1 is the max, reality you’ll have 4-5 horses 75-1 or more and then you’ll have some of those 20-1 shots lower.
