Derby, Oaks Undercards Coming Together

Yes, we’ve heard by now that Quality Road is out of the Derby (but at least they’re doing right by the horse so we can see him later in the season) and we’ll have more Derby field discussion tomorrow, but let’s not overlook the undercards for both the Derby and Oaks – it’s going to be a good few days at the track.

Making her first start of the season (and her second on a dirt track) is the mighty Zenyatta. Churchill Downs must have been thrilled to get such a big headliner for Oaks day; while they will not be in the same race, at least they can say they were the first track to feature Zenyatta (pictured) and Rachel Alexandra on the same card. Zenyatta’s goal is the Louisville Distaff; her chief rival is the also-unbeaten One Caroline, although there will be some other nice mares in the race including Unbridled Belle and Bear Now. I don’t see them in the same class as Zenyatta, but you never know what surprises the trip from California and her less-preferred surface might spring. As a fan, however, I hope to see her crush another field.

On Derby Day itself, my personal favorite Einstein is back for the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic; he has a solid field to face including the improving Court Vision as well as European horses like Proudinsky, Artiste Royal and Zambezi Sun. Here’s hoping he’s the first repeat winner of the race.

Indian Blessing will also be running on Saturday in her first race back from Dubai; while there are some interesting competitors, the Humana Distaff looks a lot lighter than what she faced in her second-place finish in the Golden Shaheen. Barring a Dubai bounce, she should have no trouble here.

I’m a bit annoyed they renamed the La Troienne for Eight Belles; I’m all for her having a race named after her, but how about a new one? Sigh. In any event, it would seem like poetic justice if Larry Jones trainee Just Jenda wins that one, but it must be said that beyond Rachel Alexandra and the currently-lukewarm Stardom Bound, this year’s 3-year-old filly division seems a little light by comparison with the boys (practically the reverse of last year’s situation).

There are some other fun undercard races on both days, and more details will be forthcoming later in the week after the fields are drawn – but beyond my La Troienne complaint, it’s hard to be annoyed about a weekend of racing that includes both Zenyatta and Einstein.

Any idea where i can find last years derby exacta probably payouts? Not the final payout but what each combo would have paid? Can’t seem to find the final list and with a 20 horse field I know these can get out of control fast! Just trying to get a head start on setting up some bets! Thanks!

Let’s hope that morning sickness doesn’t have Unbridled Belle at less than her best.
