The news is in that Winning Colors was put down yesterday (on my birthday, no less). The great mare was responsible for my first correct Derby prediction (and, it should be noted, last correct Derby prediction until Smarty Jones) — quite possibly the only time I’ve ever rooted for D. Wayne Lukas.
Her Derby victory is all the more impressive in retrospect when you consider that she soundly beat Risen Star (not to mention Private Terms, Seeking the Gold and Forty Niner), who in my opinion remains one of the most under-rated racehorses of the 20th century (despite a Belmont victory that mirrored that of his father, Secretariat).
So, without further ado, Winning Colors’ Kentucky Derby:
What a great run… thanks for sharing. RIP.
I guess I had the same idea as you 🙂 Gosh, does she bring back good memories! I’m usually a sucker for deep closers, but this was a big, powerful filly who took it to the boys right from the beginning and dared them to catch her. Woman power!
Wow, what a special girl. Thanks for sharing the video. 🙂
