It’s Not Easy Being Green

Even if he never wins a race, at least The Green Monkey has, in a sense, accomplished something — word is that the long-running feud between Coolmore/Ballydoyle and Darley/Godolphin has ended. It seems that the Godolphin folks noticed that refusing to buy horses sired by Coolmore stallions was not a great move from a racing perspective, and so now that rule has quietly been dropped — and presumably bidding wars of the sort that led to The Green Monkey’s infamy are, at least for now, also a thing of the past. Perhaps in celebration of that fact, he’ll actually take to the track on Saturday, although it must be said that there is little precedent for this much press coverage about a six furlong maiden special weight.

You will also be aware that a filly named Rags to Riches is back in action this weekend in the Gazelle; even with her long layoff, she should easily beat Tough Tiz’s Sis and Lear’s Princess, but it should still be a nice workout. And there’s still the outside chance that, should everyone else be retired by the end of October, she could go in the Classic, although it is unlikely:

The Gazelle will be Rags to Riches’ prep for the Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth Park this October, where she’s pointed at the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Distaff. They hem and they haw, but one gets the feeling that they won’t start her in the Classic, against males, unless all of the good horses don’t show up.

“It would depend on how she ran in the Gazelle and who all shows up in the Classic,” said Pletcher.

You never know.
