Better than a Triple Crown

Curlin and Street Sense both put in phenomenal performances in the Preakness; it just so happened that Curlin’s was more so on the day. While the rest of the American public may yawn now that there is no Triple Crown on the line, for the racing fan there’s a more exciting prospect — a rivalry. Hard Spun was compromised by moving early behind suicidal fractions, but he still had the class to hang on for third — seeing these three horses matched up again (and perhaps with the addition of Chelokee or the return of Any Given Saturday, although I am most keen to see Rags to Riches take on this bunch in the Belmont) throughout the summer should be quite a treat.

Barring injury, seeing them step up to face Invasor later in the season should really be something to see. I would hope that it is difficult enough to separate them so that they’d need to face each other as four-year-olds, but I’m realistic enough to know that’s very unlikely (especially given Curlin’s ownership group — and for once I am in complete agreement with Mr. Beyer that they are not the easiest people to root for — to be completely honest, that’s has been one of my biggest knocks against Curlin, but he certainly displayed enough class to let me ignore his connections).

I enjoyed hitting the trifecta in the Hirch Jacobs; it would have been nicer if I’d actually been able to bet on it, but illness kept us away from the OTB this week. Ah well. In other no-Triple-Crown news, make sure you check out the article on Genuine Risk in the Times today. It’s always nice to see what she’s up to.
