Derby Trial

Teuflesburg is entered in the Derby Trial as a fallback in case he doesn’t make the Derby field, but given his old-school experience so far, wouldn’t it be interesting to see him bring the race back as a Derby prep? True, it hasn’t been successful since the vastly-under-rated Tim Tam (who is number one on my ‘should have won the Triple Crown’ list*) won the Derby Trial and Derby the following week back in ’58, but it would be interesting to see someone try with a horse who had had the right sort of conditioning.

As mentioned earlier, Bwana Bull is also on the Derby Trial list — also listed are Flying First Class, Wafi City and Out of Gwedda.

*For those not familiar with Tim Tam, he won the Derby and Preakness and finished second in the Belmont
after having badly broken a sesamoid. He underwent surgery at Penn and went on to become a successful stud at Calumet Farm. For those interested in statistics, he only had one start at 2, but still had 14 lifetime starts by the time of his injury in the Belmont.

Hi Superfecta, Saw your post re: Tim Tam on the NYT’s ‘At The Rail’ so decided to read your blog. It’s great to read articles, essays and blogs that recall a beloved and appreciated thoroughbred. Like a good racehorse, it’s about heart.

The subtitle to your blog, ‘being the musings of…..’ brought a smile.

    “racing romantic”

Also saw your post on NYT. I agree that Tim Tam is underrated – I was a horse-crazy kid of 10 when he was injured, sent a letter to Mrs. Markey and received a lovely note and photo in reply. And was able to visit Tim Tam at Calumet Farm. His is a wonderful story and he was a great horse.
