Ouija Board Triumphs; Some Smarty News

Ouija Board did a fantastic job in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot today — she didn’t just beat the boys, she beat Electrocutionist, winner of the Dubai World Cup (as well as favorite David Junior). Soviet Song also put in a good effort to win the Windsor Forest Stakes — there’s a nice article here on both races. It’s nice to see what top horses can accomplish when they aren’t retired at 3; at least we have Perfect Drift carrying the flag for the older guys in the US.

Some interesting facts: Ouija Board and Soviet Song have won a combined 37 races; Ouija Board was dropping back to ten furlongs for this race and she last raced on June 2nd, also against males. Does anyone still doubt there’s still stamina in the breed somewhere? Unfortunately we rarely get to see what our more ‘mature’ stars might be capable of, despite the fact that most horses haven’t stopped growing until closer to age 5. Ah well…at least this makes for a very interesting Breeders’ Cup picture.

As far as US-based grass races, the Colonial Turf Cup remains oversubscribed; while Showing Up and Stream Cat look like the favorites on paper, I also like Lewis Michael. It will be interesting to see Showing Up on turf; Stream Cat is already proven on the surface, but it would be nice to get a real rivalry going.

In Smarty Jones news, his half-brother will be standing at stud in Australia. Sippin’ Bourbon is unraced (no official reason given for that) and is perhaps not the most attractive horse in the world (there’s a photo here), but his fee is low and they are limiting the number of mares he’ll be covering. I remember seeing his other half-brother’s photos (Speedy Jones — he sold for 40K as a yearling and was recently sold again for 120K) when he was on the auction block last year and having similar thoughts about his looks. We’ll see where that goes.

There is also an article which I missed in the initial news barrage over Barbaro’s injury in which Pat Chapman goes to visit Smarty at Three Chimneys and meets some of his foals. It also mentions her friendship with the Jacksons and her concern for Barbaro’s condition, contrasted with her relief that Smarty was safely retired, controversial though that decision was. Interesting stuff.
