Barbaro gets a bath, the Hall of Fame gets…no one?

Barbaro has had a real bath, which sounds like another positive sign. There is more video footage of Edgar Prado’s visit on ESPN’s site and there is a great op-ed piece by Laura Hillenbrand on how safety for racehorses (and jockeys, naturally) needs to be carefully studied and improved.

In other news, no comtemporary horses were selected for induction into the Racing Hall of Fame. I have to agree with Blood-Horse editor Ray Paulick that leaving out great names like Silverbulletday (to give just one example) seems entirely backward. The changes to the voting system made in 2005 did not make it more ‘exclusive’ — they’ve simply made it an annoyingly arcane process that is even more meaningless to casual fans.

But there is good award news too — the Equine Protection Award is being given to Staci and Arthur Hancock III and their work to prevent horse slaughter. That sounds more like a job well done to me.

Sweetnorthernsaint is definitely out of the Belmont; while I’d like to see him at a mile and a half, he did come out of the Preakness with a minor injury and it seems as though erring on the side of caution is the way to go. I do think we’ll be seeing some strong, interesting races from him in the future; I’m content to wait for the Haskell.
