Zenyatta in the snow

Snow is not a worry for this California girl

Joe Drape has a nice catch-up article on Zenyatta’s life on the farm, and he zeroes in on the biggest question about the nation’s favorite mare – not whether or not she’ll be Horse of the Year (though we find that out on Monday – check out Hello Race Fans for more on the Eclipse Awards), but which big-name stallion has been selected to be her first beau.  The presumption has long been that it will be A.P. Indy – after all, she’s living at the farm where he is king, and he’s one of the most in-demand studs in the world.  But she’s got a good few inches on him, and has a race record that blows his (entirely respectable one) out of the water; can he live up to her standards?

Of course, if A.P. Indy isn’t good enough, it’s going to be awfully difficult to find someone who is.  One presumes Zenyatta won’t be going to see Blame (that would just be awkward), but it’s hard to think of another American-based stallion who might fit the bill.

I’d be interested to see her go to a European star like Galileo, Montjeu, Oasis Dream or even Yeats; given Zenyatta’s ease on synthetics, there could be the potential to produce a grass superstar – and having a famous mother could be just the sort of added interest that might get the US spotlight focused on such races.  Of course, there are no guarantees in breeding; it’s highly unlikely that Zenyatta will manage to produce a foal nearly as amazing as she is – but there are always precedents like Personal Ensign and Urban Sea that suggest it’s possible.

And as for the lucky stallion I’d pick for this first foray into broodmare-land?  Einstein.  Just because.
