Breeders’ Cup 2010 Pre-Entries: Friday Races

Will Friday be Blind Luck's lucky day?

Will Friday be Blind Luck's lucky day?

Breeders’ Cup pre-entries are out, so it’s time for the handicapping to begin in earnest.  Here are a few initial thoughts on Friday’s races:

Horse (weight) / Trainer

A. U. Miner (126) / Hanna
Eldaafer (126) / D. Alvarado
Temple City (126) / Gaines
Awesome Gem (126) / C. Dollase
Giant Oak (126) / Block
Alcomo (126) / Caramori
Gabriel’s Hill (126) / Benzel
Atoned (126) / Howard
Bright Horizon / O’Brien
Million Seller (123) / Motion
Romp (126) / Mulhall
Precision Break (126) / Cole
Prince Will I Am (122) / Nihei

Notes: Prince Will I Am and Alcomo were both supplemented to enter the race; being that this co-ed race is run on XX Chromosome Day, it would be fitting if filly Million Seller won – or if Romp, the aforementioned Prince Will I Am, Eldaafer or Temple City won for their female trainers. Awesome Gem is also pre-entered in Dirt Mile (his first preference), but it’s pleasing to see a horse who might excel at either distance.  It’s interesting to see Giant Oak here, but I’m looking more at the European invader, Bright Horizon, who won last time out.

Juvenile Fillies Turf

Horse / Trainer (all carry 122 lbs)

Kathmanblu / McPeek
New Normal / Frostad
Winter Memories / Toner
Jordy Y / Catalano
Arch Support / Contessa
Fancy Point / Phipps
Allure d’Amour / Pletcher
Flood Plain / Gosden
More Than Real / Pletcher
Quiet Oasis / Meehan
Tale Untold / Hannon
Theyskens’ Theory / Meehan
Together / O’Brien
Wyomia / Vella
Others entered –
Silent Joy / Nihei
Dos Lunas /Glenney
Forest Legend / Oliver
Nina Fever / Ward

Notes: My strategy here is a little dull: look for the Europeans with a big win or two.  With that in mind, I like Tale Untold and Together. However, do note Winter Memories, recently highlighted on TheRailJordy Y and Thyskens’ Theory both have first preference in the Juvenile Fillies.

Filly & Mare Sprint

Horse (weight) / Trainer

Dubai Majesty (124) / Calhoun
Jessica Is Back (124) / Wolfson
My Jen (122)  / Kenneally
Sweet August Moon (124)  / Koriner
Champagne d’Oro (122) / Guillot
Unrivaled Belle
(124) / Mott
Evening Jewel (122) / Cassidy
Switch (122) / Sadler
Informed Decision (124) / Sheppard
Rightly So (124) / A. Dutrow
Secret Gypsy (124) / Werner
Gabby’s Golden Gal (124) / Baffert
Moontune Missy (124) / Harty
Sara Louise (124) / bin Suroor
Others entered –
Rinterval (124) / Reed
Qualia (124) / Ribaldo
Tidal Pool (122)  / Lukas
Derwin’s Star (122) / Klesaris
Waveline (124)  / Cecil
Double Espresso (124) / Amoss
First Passage (124)  / Wolfson
Nicole H (122) / Hushion

Notes: This is a packed race – Evening Jewel and Dubai Majesty have both been interesting this year, and Sara Louise or Gabby’s Golden Gal could return to form, though I like Informed Decision overall.  Even most of the ‘extra’ entries are very legitimate shots. Unrivalled Belle has this race as a second choice, with her first pick as the day’s featured race.

Filly & Mare Turf

Horse (weight) / Trainer

Eclair de Lune (124) / McAnally
Hibaayeb (121)  / bin Suroor
Harmonious (121) / Shirreffs
Hot Cha Cha (124)  / Sims
Forever Together (124) / Sheppard
Shared Account (124) / Motion
Keertana (124) / Proctor
Miss Keller (124) / Attfield
Red Desire (124) / Matsunaga
Midday (124)  / Cecil
Plumania (124) / Fabre

Notes: Japan’s Red Desire is interesting, though she’s up against a tough group – it’s possible to make a strong case for almost every horse in the field.  I’m partial to MiddayRed Desire and Plumania both have the Turf as their second choice.

Juvenile Fillies

Horse / Trainer (all carry 122 lbs)

A Z Warrior / Baffert
Heat Lightning / Pletcher
Tell A Kelly / Sadler
Harlan’s Ruby / McPeek
Jordy Y / Catalano
Indian Gracey / Hollendorfer
Joyful Victory / A. Dutrow
Izshelegal / Knight
Awesome Feather / Gold
Believe in A.P. / R. Dutrow
Delightful Mary / Casse
Soundwave / Werner
Theyskens’ Theory / Meehan

Notes: I was hoping Theyskens’ Theory’s name had something to do with an obscure scientific theorem I’d never heard of and could learn about – I was annoyed to discover that apparently her name is, in fact, fashion related (though it is worth noting her family is of interest). With the ‘curious name’ angle out, I’ll have to stick with past performances and pedigree data like a real handicapper: AZ Warrior and Heat Lightning look like ones to watch.

Not the Distaff

Horse (weight) / Trainer

Acoma (124) / Carroll
Life at Ten (124)  / Pletcher
Malibu Prayer (124) / Pletcher
Blind Luck (122) / Hollendorfer
Unrivaled Belle (124) /  Mott
Evening Jewel (122)  / Cassidy
Havre de Grace (122) / A. Dutrow
Acting Happy (122) / R. Dutrow
Persistently (124)  / McGaughey
Milwaukee Appeal (124) / Fairlie
Seeking the Title (124)  / Stewart
It’s Tea Time (122)  / Arnold

Notes: With Zenyatta sticking to the Classic to defend her title, this race looks considerably more competitive.  Presuming Evening Jewel goes in the F&M Sprint, that leaves Life and Ten and Blind Luck sitting atop the field – although the talented Acoma and Persistently are certainly capable of winning the day.

Check back later for initial thoughts on Saturday’s races…
