Kentucky Derby Undercard

Happy Kentucky Oaks Day!  We’ll be following what is likely to be the last day of good weather at Churchill Downs via Twitter, but why not preview the Derby undercard in between races?

Eight Belles Stakes – 1.19 pm

  1. Buckleupbuttercup / J R Leparoux  /    118  /    E Kenneally
  2. Hot Dixie Chick /    R Albarado / 122 /    S M Asmussen
  3. Bell’s Shoes / C H Borel  / 116 /    W H Fires
  4. Decelerator / T J Thompson   / 120  /   D W Lukas
  5. Sister Resistor /  R Bejarano   /  116  /   R E Dutrow, Jr.
  6. Kantstopdancin / T Farina  /   116  /   W E Hall
  7. Visavis / S Bridgmohan /    116    / S Margolis

Hot Dixie Chick is the obvious standout here, but could Calvin work some magic with Bell’s ShoesDecelerator is also dangerous.

Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes – 2.08 pm

  1. Miss Keller /   J Castellano    /  118  /    R L Attfield
  2. Phola /     R A Dominguez  /   118  /   T A Pletcher
  3. Fantasia /   J R Leparoux  /   118  /   J E Sheppard
  4. Hooh Why/     R D Allen, Jr.  /    118  /   M Hoffman
  5. Tizaqueena / G K Gomez  /   118   /  M Stidham
  6. Hot Cha Cha /     J Graham  /   118 /    P A Sims
  7. Diamondrella /  R Albarado   /  118  /   J Corrigan
  8. Cure for Sale /    J Alvarado   /  118 /    R Malek

Tizaqueena is the deserving favorite here; I like Diamondrella, but whenever I choose her, she has an off day.  I’ll stick with Tizaqueena over Phola, but could see Hooh Why hitting the board as well.

Humana Distaff – 2.59 pm

  1. Dr. Zic /  K J Desormeaux  /    124  /    J Scott
  2. Warbling /     R A Dominguez  /   122  /   E Kenneally
  3. Informed Decision /    J R Leparoux  /   124  /   J E Sheppard
  4. Dubai Majesty /    J Theriot   /  118  /   W B Calhoun
  5. Double Espresso /    J Graham  /   118   /  T M Amoss
  6. Pretty Prolific /     R Albarado /    120  /   J E Baker
  7. Cassidys Pride /    J Lezcano   /  118   /  M A Estevez
  8. Rated Fiesty /   S Bridgmohan   / 118 /    S M Asmussen
  9. Free Flying Soul /   M E Smith  /   118  /   B Headley
  10. Mona de Momma /     J Rosario  /   120  /   J W Sadler

I love Informed Decision, especially with Julien Leparoux aboard, but there is value elsewhere.  Free Flying Soul and Rated Fiesty could both surprise, although I will likely stick with Informed Decision in any exotics.

Churchill Downs Stakes – 3.52 pm

  1. Munnings /    J R Velazquez  / 122  /   T A Pletcher
  2. Country Day /    B J Hernandez, Jr.   /  118  /   S Margolis
  3. Wall Street Wonder /     C Hill  /   120 /    J P Terranova, II
  4. Victory Notion /     J McKee   /  118   /  J Talley
  5. Hamazing Destiny /    T J Thompson   /  118  /   D W Lukas
  6. Hull /   S Bridgmohan /   118  /   D L Romans
  7. Warrior’s Reward /  J R Leparoux  /   124   /  I R Wilkes
  8. Ventana /  G K Gomez  /   122  /   B Baffert
  9. Atta Boy Roy /     C H Borel   /  118   /  V Lund
  10. Cool Coal Man /   J Lezcano  /   118   /  N P Zito
  11. Kensei /   R Albarado  /   118 /    S M Asmussen
  12. Musket Man /     R A Dominguez  /   118  /   D S Ryan
  13. Accredit /     A Garcia  /   118   /  M J Maker

Munnings is one of my favorite speedballs, and it’s great to see him pop up on a big day.  It’s nice to see Musket Man back as well, and the two of them should make this very interesting.  Warrior’s Reward is also relatively short-priced, but I like him, too.  I could see Hull pulling an upset if something peculiar happens, but I think this race belongs to Munnings.

Woodford Reserve Turf Classic – 4.46 pm

  1. Wise River /    C H Borel   /  117   /  C Hanna
  2. General Quarters /   R Bejarano  /   119  /   T R McCarthy
  3. Court Vision / R Albarado   /  124  /   R E Dutrow, Jr.
  4. Pop Tarrt /    S Gonzalez, Jr.  /   117   /  J Deegan
  5. Al Khali /     K J Desormeaux  /   119  /   W I Mott
  6. Battle of Hastings /    R A Dominguez  /   119   /  J Mullins
  7. Blues Street /     J Castellano  /   121  /   T A Pletcher
  8. Loup Breton /   G K Gomez /     121   /  J C Canani
  9. Yate’s Black Cat /    J R Leparoux /    117   /  D L Romans

General Quarters is back, which is pleasant to see.  This is a tough spot for him, though, with the talented Court Vision and Loup Breton in here.  I have a feeling it’s going to be Loup Breton’s day.
