Following Rachel Down The Shore

I like Delaware Park a lot, really I do, but my schedule is so packed this summer I can only make one race, which means I’ll be heading to Monmouth to see Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell. It certainly makes more sense for her to aim for this over the Del Cap – she’ll get a nice weight break, the distance should suit her and she’ll remain with her age group for a little while longer. That’s not to say I don’t believe she would not blow right past Unbridled Belle, even with the high weight in the Del Cap field, but there’s more of a cachet should she beat Belmont winner Summer Bird (and the other boys).

I’m trying to remember the last time we saw the Preakness and Belmont winners face one another under any circumstances – there must be something more recent than Sunday Silence and Easy Goer in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, surely. (Anyone? Did they all go right to stud or back to allowance races starting in the 1990s?) I like that the powers that be at Monmouth are going to aggressively go after Mine That Bird again as well – that would set up a very compelling race indeed. Even in his absence, the possible participation of Munnings should keep things interesting. I’m not entirely sure why the Star-Ledger suggests that Rachel Alexandrastunned race goers’ with an ‘improbable win‘ in the Preakness (since when is the favorite winning a shock?), but it’s still nice to see the race is getting some coverage.

True, it means there will be a crowd, but I really enjoyed seeing the Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth – they can put on a big day, given the opportunity. Will there be bobbleheads? Will everyone receive a free copy of Vogue with Rachel Alexandra’s photo? (You can see video of her fashion shoot on the Stonestreet website, which is a nice touch). I’m holding out hope for better commemorative t-shirts (the Preakness ones are too large and incredibly cheaply made) – but regardless of the swag, consider me there.

Great minds think alike…I mentioned bobbleheads as well, but am HOPING beyond hope that we get a nifty t-shirt insted.

If all else fails, a hat also works, even though that tends to be a bit male-centric of a gift.

Third choice would be a poster of Rachel, Summer Bird, and Mine That Bird (should he attend).
