Breeders’ Cup Friday

Closest thing you'll see to a lockThe Breeders’ Cup is almost upon us, and tomorrow will see some fantastic fillies and mares take to the track (most likely while you, dear reader, are at work). While I won’t be wagering on tomorrow’s races, I will be keeping a close eye on things (while finalizing my picks for Saturday’s races, which will appear later).

Filly & Mare Sprint
1) Magnificience
– Would love to see her confirm her early promise
2) Indyanne
– Not sure she’s in quite the same league, but consistent
3) Intangaroo
– Often overlooked only to win
4) Lady Sprinter
– Speedball from Argentina
5) Indian Blessing
– Favorite for a reason
6) Zaftig
– Only question is the layoff, but it’s a big question
7) Dream Rush
– Didn’t do so well in last year’s installment
8) Tiz Elemental
– Big step up in class here
9) Dearest Trickski
– Undefeated at Santa Anita
10) Miraculous Miss
– Not on her recent form
11) Jazzy
– Ditto
12) Ventura
– Strong threat from the Frankel barn
13) Tizzy’s Tune
– Not against this field
14) La Tee
– More of a G2/G3 competitor

Prediction: Intangaroo, Indian Blessing, Magnificience, Zaftig

Juvenile Fillies Turf
1) April Pride
– Competitive against top-flight Euro competition
2) Laragh
– Talented, but inconsistent
3) Maram
– Lightly raced, but a winner both times
4) C Karma
– May not like the course
5) Emmy Darling – 10th last time out
6) Freedom Rings
– First trip to the West coast
7) Consequence
– Another well-bred Phipps filly
8) Sugar Mom
– Experienced winner, but this is her first try on grass
9) Renda
– Also new to the turf, but a winner on dirt
10) Beyond Our Reach
– Group-1 placed in Europe
11) Saucey Evening
– Nice record, has won here
12) Heart Shaped
– Not the strongest Ballydoyle contender, but could be a danger here

Prediction: Heart Shaped, Beyond Our Reach, Saucey Evening, April Pride

Juvenile Fillies

1) Evita Argentina
– Interesting pedigree
2) Persistently
– Another Phipps filly star in the making?
3) Black Magic Mama
– Has yet to win a race
4) Sky Diva
– Winner of the Frizette
5) Be Smart – A winner by Smarty Jones, but she might prefer sprinting
6) Van Lear Rose
– Two stakes wins for the Canadian-based filly so far
7) Dave’s Revenge – Looks outclassed here and might prefer turf
8) C.S. Silk
- Step up in class and something of a layoff
9) Palacio de Amor
– Has lots of speed if she can ration it out
10) Stardom Bound
– Grey filly by Tapit has won around 2 turns
11) Pursuit of Glory
– Something of a Ballydoyle wild card
12) Dream Empress
– Winner of the Alcibiades
13) Doremifasollatido
– Matron winner ships in from NY

Prediction: Evita Argentina, Palacio de Amor, Persistently, Dream Empress

Filly & Mare Turf
1) Sealy Hill
– Not as strong outside Canada
2) Vacare
– Not as tough as stablemate Mauralakana
3) Forever Together
– Is the distance a bit much for her?
4) Visit
– British import seems best suited to the mile
5) Wait a While
– Former champ looked great winning the Yellow Ribbon here
6) Dynaforce
– Possibly a notch below the top hrses
7) Mauralakana
– Hard not to love this mare
8) Halfway to Heaven
– 3 Group 1 victories in Europe this season
9) Folk Opera
– Well-traveled Godolphin filly should make it interesting
10) Pure Clan
- Tougher field than she’s seen before here

Prediction: Halfway to Heaven, Mauralakana, Folk Opera, Wait a While

Filly & Mare Classic
1) Zenyatta
– Even the 1 hole isn’t a worry – just watch her YouTube channel
2) Hystericalady
– Not sure she will love the surface
3) Cocoa Beach
- They breed them well in Chile; tough competitor
4) Music Note
– Two turns may be tougher for her
5) Carriage Trai
l – If it’s her day, she could be in the money
6) Ginger Punch
– Always respect the defending champion
7) Santa Teresita
– Probably more of a G2 performer
8) Bear Now
– Not quite here yet, but seems to be getting better with age

Prediction: Zenyatta, Cocoa Beach, Carriage Trail, Ginger Punch

Check back later for Saturday’s picks, a Caboose list and (possibly) some live-blogging during the Friday races.

Not to be picayune but your petition you signed states: “To show that we are serious about these matters, we pledge to protest by not attending, betting or watching the entire Friday card unless the Ladies’ Classic name is changed and there are assurances from the Breeders’ Cup to create a formal feedback mechanism incorporating fans in ongoing marketing decisions of the Breeders’ Cup”

Not quite following the pledge now are we?

OK, I’ll be nice and respond in both places — I won’t be watching it live (even though I have to take part of the day off anyway to head to the pediatrician). What did you think TiVo was for?

And why be anonymous? I can see your IP address, you know…
