If Big Brown wins the Belmont, his Triple Crown will place him on the threshold of greatness; he will still need to charge through the door with further feats to prove it.

If Big Brown wins, we his contemporaries may not rank him among the greats; time may be kinder, as his connections and weak crop fade in memory — he will be remembered as a Triple Crown winner of uncanny potential while the associated marketing tie-ins, fake tans and drugs become vague memories of the past.

If Big Brown wins in something approaching Secretariat’s manner, those who will say they were there to see it will certainly exceed the 130,000 or so who were actually in attendance.

If Big Brown wins, he will have overcome more than his bad feet; he will have overcome the population explosion that has occurred over the last thirty years in thoroughbred breeding which has contributed in no small part to the Triple Crown drought.

If Big Brown loses, we will likely never see him on a racetrack again.
