Gossip And Another Top Ten

With most of the major preps out of the way, there’s just time for the Coolmore Lexington and gossip. Tomcito is the horse I’m watching (and I hope he finds Polytrack as much to his liking as the deep Peruvian tracks); I liked his third-place finish in the Florida Derby (especially after a long layoff) and think that the prep could actually work to his advantage. Dogwood Stables has both Blackberry Road and Atoned in the mix; they may use the race as a Preakness prep, which is also the likely plan for Salute the Sarge.

The main gossip of the week surrounds the likelihood of Eight Belles (pictured) going in the Derby rather than the Oaks (and she will probably be entered in both). After coming close with Hard Spun (and getting sidetracked with Rockport Harbor), I can certainly sympathize with owner Rick Porter’s desire to take another shot this year, and based on her numbers and form, she’s a legitimate contender — indeed, she’s in my Top Ten this week. What I do not want to see is for her to be scratched from the Derby after a bad post position draw, thus shutting out someone else (especially a horse like Tomcito or Big Truck) who should really get a chance. Of course, if I had my way, the graded earnings=Derby gate equation would be shaken up considerably, but that’s another story.

So, without further ado, the Superfecta Derby Top Ten for this week:

  • Big Brown – The feet and the experience factors cannot be ignored, but neither can his potential — unless he gets caught up in a speed duel
  • Colonel John – If he were by anyone other than Tiznow, I would be wary of his lack of experience on conventional dirt
  • Eight Belles - She’s got the distance pedigree and much better numbers than most of her potential competitors
  • Monba – Let’s see what else he’s got
  • Pyro – He’ll need to work between his non-effort in the Blue Grass and the Derby to be in peak form, but he’s (otherwise) always been consistent
  • Recapturetheglory – As a big Risen Star fan, I’d like to see his connections back, but he (like War Pass) shares Cherokee Run’s sprinting genes
  • Smooth Air – Has been a little overlooked since his Florida Derby effort
  • Tale of Ekati – He has the pedigree and running style to suit the Derby – and seems to finally be maturing into himself
  • Tomcito – Here’s hoping he gets the cash he needs in the Coolmore Lexington - he’s shaping up to be my favorite closer
  • Visionaire – Overcame a tough trip over the weekend — good practice for the Derby

Update: Tomcito just worked a bullet at Keeneland. I trust that bodes well…

I would love to see Tomcito win the Lexington and go on to the Derby. He would add much excitement to the stretch run …

I can’t believe you don’t have Gayego in the Top 10. I really hope they will enter Eight Belles, she has no chance against the colts.
