Barbaro the Musical

Yes, it’s finally a reality — a Broadway musical based on Barbaro’s story, starring Brad Pitt:

Mr. Pitt, who will play Dean Richardson, the surgeon who fought valiantly to save Barbaro’s life, said the action in Barbaro the Musical begins two weeks following the horse’s death, “when reports of the first Barbaro sightings began to appear on” The play will also feature several of the miracles that have been attributed to Barbaro.

Well, not really (although, in fact, it’s not a new idea — there is another). But it does bring to mind Elephant!, the musical biography of the Elephant Man as seen in The Tall Guy, a sadly overlooked Emma Thompson film. The musical disaster in the film features hits like ‘He’s Packing His Trunk’ and showcases a chorus of tap-dancing elephants (and of course the all-important hydraulic lift as part of the set). Genius. Continuing in a theatrical vein, I highly recommend you take some time to visit the New York Musical Theatre Festival next week as my buddy Jesse is starring in the highly-acclaimed political operetta The Beastly Bombing. I can’t go myself, but if enough of you good people go, perhaps it can get funding for an off-Broadway run that I can actually attend. Hey, it’s got to be better than a Barbaro musical (or anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber after about 1978).

Speaking of things musical, I’m off to DC to see The Lucksmiths this weekend, which means I’m taking suggestions as to where I might be able to watch this weekend’s races — any horse racing bars to recommend? It’s easy enough to find a soccer bar anywhere in the world through the magic of the interweb, so it seems there should be a similar resource for horse racing, but alas, no joy.

More details of the actual horse racing tomorrow…
