Reversal of Fortune

Joey Chestnut brought the Mustard Belt back to the US for the first time in six years, just beating valiant champion Takeru Kobayashi, who suffered what we term in the trade a ‘reversal of fortune’ in the final moments of the event. The new record, 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes, can only inspire patriotic fervor. Clearly, the sport has changed since Kobayashi appeared on the scene — the old days of larger contestants (e.g. Eric “Badlands” Booker) are clearly a thing of the past (although few of today’s top competitors are quite as petite as Sonya ‘The Black Widow’ Thomas). Although they were close throughout the entire contest, Kobayashi was obviously not at his very highest level, despite setting a lifetime best hot dog effort. Hopefully after a bit of a rest for his arthritic jaw, Kobayashi will return to reclaim his crown — his connections translator did indicate that he plans to compete next year. Well played, gentlemen (even if it was a totally chalky result).

Oh, and Funny Cide and Any Given Saturday were both victors today. Huzzah!
