Well, David Beckham is officially here. He limped around on the field briefly (maybe a shot of cobra venom would help a bit) but in general the Galaxy played their usual game that’s gotten them second-from-bottom in the standings. As a former San Jose Earthquakes fan, I was pleased to see Joe Cannon make some great saves — although he probably wished that he had some sort of defense so that it wasn’t all on him. I’ll have to dig out my photo of ‘Me with Joe Cannon and the MLS Trophy’ at some point.

Cobi Jones seemed to be the only Galaxy player moving the ball forward at all despite his age; you’d think Landon Donovan could have pitched in a little bit more. I’ve always felt that Landon’s got a ton of potential but has never really buckled down to work — he’s coasted in MLS instead of working for a spot in the starting eleven for a team in the Bundesliga. Still, I have shared a donut with the man, so I suppose I should not judge him too harshly (but that doesn’t mean that coach Frank Yallop, who kept him in line for the Quakes, should not do so).

But I do hope that Beckham can raise the profile of soccer in the US — at least enough to get Philadelphia an expansion team. I’m missing out on my live soccer fix.

Back to horse racing — Octave looked good on Saturday and there was some nice footage of Rags to Riches — let’s hope that this story isn’t a prelude to anything more sinister — but so far, so good.
