TiVo-Blogging the Preakness Draw

Being a listing of some random thoughts that occurred to me during my slightly delayed viewing of the Preakness draw (and I’m pleased Street Sense has an outside post so that we can settle the whole ‘rail’ thing):

Good elements:

  1. Kenny Mayne, Randy Moss and Jeannine Edwards. More, please!
  2. Debunking the ‘tight turns’ myth as well as the ‘Preakness favors speed’ lore
  3. The isolated cameras on Curlin and Street Sense in the Derby
  4. The footage of Street Sense’s recent workout. It was nice to see it on my big TV instead of a tiny computer screen — and it looked impressive.

A few small negatives:

  1. The location: I was trapped in the Baltimore ESPN SportsZone for the first US game during the last World Cup (it’s hard to find a soccer bar in Baltimore on short notice). Our national team’s performance required stronger beers than were available at said facility, so I have some negative associations about the place. A Blue Moon (compliments of Coors) is no Allagash White when it comes to flavor either.
  2. The plug for Preakness.com. It would have been a bad web site in 1996. It’s unacceptable now. I’m sure it’s part of a contractual obligation, but it’s just so awful. I could have thrown together a better one in about an hour.

Final observation: Seeing historical footage of Pimlico makes me want to watch Ealing comedy classic Passport to Pimlico if only for the irony involved in that the American Pimlico looked great in the 1940s and its British namesake is an awful lot nicer now. Although singing of London’s Pimlico, David Devant and his Spirit Wife’s lyrics could not be more apt in this case: “…you won’t believe the dreams they’ve got to sell to you…” (particularly if you presume that ‘they’ means Magna)…
