RIP, Chilukki

There is sad news away from the Triple Crown trail this week; champion mare Chilukki has died from foaling complications (and her Ghostzapper foal did not make it either). She was buried intact at Stonerside Stables — quite an honor for any horse, but especially a mare. In addition to winners Chubasco Cat and Chilukki Cat, she has a two-year-old AP Indy colt and a yearling filly who should be coming to the track in the future if all goes well.

Chilukki was one of the first American horses I followed (again) after moving back to the US from the UK (I’m afraid I missed a lot of the ’90s as far as American racing goes — back in the pre-decent-internet days, it was hard to keep up from there), so it’s particularly sad to hear of her loss.

But back to Triple Crown talk; while the overseas bookies are loving Street Sense’s chances, let’s not forget that the Preakness is shaping up to be a very tough race and it seems unlikely that he’s going to get the perfect spot on the rail he had for the Derby (although I would not like to see a race run the way the Belmont was for Smarty Jones, where it seemed pretty clear many of the horses were just running him down, not aiming to win). Team Hard Spun should relish the trip to Pimlico, and Chelokee may run in either the Preakness or in the Barbaro Stakes on the Preakness undercard – either seems fitting. D. Wayne Lukas may enter both Flying First Class and Starbase; I am intrigued by Starbase, but we’ll see how it all shapes up.

The current Belmont rumor is that Rags to Riches may headed that way; she’s certainly got the pedigree and the numbers to back it up. After all, the inaugural Belmont winner was a filly named Ruthless, and Tanya beat the boys as well…
