Stud Notes

It’s been a busy week or so in the breeding world; tiny Megahertz had a Giants Causeway colt while Intercontinental’s contribution to her illustrious family is an Empire Maker filly.

Real Quiet is off stallion duty while being treated at NBC for problems with his back feet; I have always felt that he is a bit under-rated so here’s hoping he recovers soon. Smarty Jones was treated for a minor blockage, but he’s back at work now.

In more somber news, Is It True and Candy Stripes have both died. While neither was particularly young, it’s still too bad. At least Runaway Groom is getting the chance to enjoy a bit of pure retirement.

Oonagh Maccool has been retired and booked to Unbridled’s Song (although one might uncharitably suggest that’s practically selecting for foot problems — I would be curious to see stats on Unbridled Song’s offspring to see if they really do have fragile feet or if the reputation is unwarranted).

A small aside: I once toured a Major Stud Farm in Kentucky and noticed one of the Famous Stallions had his left front foot bandaged. It didn’t look like anything too serious, and I just mentioned in passing it looked like he might have done himself a little injury — they got very defensive and said it was ‘nothing congenital!’ — which of course made me wonder if he had bad feet to start with, an impression I had not had before visiting. But I digress…check back tomorrow for my weekend racing predictions.
