Some Good News, Some Not So Good

Apologies for the lack of updates this week; I’m about to start a new job and so it’s been a bit hectic.

I’ve been looking for more details on Afleet Alex’s hernia surgery — it sounds as though all went well, but I am curious to know if this was a known issue or something that suddenly presented itself. There was a short article on his 3/4 sister, Cash’s Girl, recently; she finished a well-beaten fourth in the Matron over the weekend but could bear watching down the line.

There was some nice Barbaro coverage earlier this week, both locally (here as well) and further afield. It’s generally positive and it’s nice to see the AP checking in on his story.

The news was not so good for Second of June, one of my favorite horses of recent times; he was put down after shattering his ankle in a workout. He had been prepping for the Jockey Club Gold Cup and I was looking forward to seeing him face Bernardini. At least we still have some solid veterans running this weekend to raise our spirits — The Tin Man heads for the Clement L Hirsch and Perfect Drift faces an interesting field in the Kentucky Cup Classic.

Finally — what was up with Rafael Bejarano’s peculiar seatmate?

I thought of you as soon as I read about Second of June. It’s been a terribly sad year for the horses, hasn’t it?

It really has been. I’d been following him since earlyish in his 2-year-old year and was so pleased he’d made it back from injury. Very sad indeed.
