Lava Man certainly returned to form over the weekend in his Pacific Classic victory. Even though he won last time out in the Hollywood Gold Cup, he didn’t seem his usual self and barely held on; this time he was firmly in command. While I’m not entirely sure where he sits compared with the Right Coast horses he’s going to face in the Breeders’ Cup, he’s certainly a storybook horse: former claimer, great on turf or dirt, multimillionaire.

Declan’s Moon was not so lucky in the Pat O’Brien — he never seemed to fire and there are suggestions he may have bled in the race, which Siren Lure ran away with. Hopefully his latest physical problems are easy ones to sort out.

In the Alabama, Pine Island showed a lot of grit as she fought off a challenge from Teammate; although I should really look up the figures, her 101 Beyer seems to be one of the best among 3-year-old fillies this year; for some reason they don’t seem to have the spark of their male counterparts.

Round Pond and Holy Ground (Barbaro’s elder half-brother) had good workouts today; hopefully they are working toward starts in the near future. Speaking of Barbaro, there is a nicely detailed article on recent events in his recovery.

The tragic details of Lost in the Fog’s cancer are detailed as well; while it’s hardly cheerful reading, it is nice to know his connections are trying to do the best by him.

As to the Travers…tune in later this week.
