Everybody is looking forward to Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta in the Apple Blossom and rightly so. However, Goldikova versus Rip Van Winkle in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot could be a clash of two of the best milers Europe has seen in recent years.

Keith: Champs Elysees is a brother to the top sire Dansili, sire of Proviso. I don’t mean to lecture to you or the author of this excellent blog, but in pedigree parlance a granddam is used to connote the 2nd dam of the horse, not to the horse’s sire’s dam.

Therefore, Ta Wee, to use the example at the left, is the dam of Great Above, but Holy Bull’s granddam is Agathea’s Dawn.

Finally we get to see racing’s leading ladies run again, it seems like it’s been a life-time.
I’m not a big believer in Awesome Act either, it seems to me like he was running against the “leftovers”, those horses who weren’t yet ready to face the big boys.

As dimly lit as the Trail is this year, I agree that Blind Luck should go for the Derby. I’m hard pressed to love any of the Derby contenders this year, so much so, that I’m emotionally tied to Jax (Jackson Bend) ONLY because he’s our local Calder horse.

I agree, Blind Luck looks better and better, why not send her to the Derby. Nowadays it would almost be bucking tradition not to send her (I wish) with fillies like Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Life is Sweet, St Trinians and Tuscan Evening all facing the boys.
Steve Haskin from the Blood Horse has a new blog he’s just put out on the Apple Blossom and it includes some fantastic facts about the popularity of the event.

Ruffian is probably one of my all time favourite race horses although I was born exactly 30 years after her. When I saw the videos of her running, when I saw the pictures… I just knew. To me she isn’t a tragedy… She is a legend, because all legends are made of what she is; perfection, brilliant life with a poignant ending.

But I must say when I watched the BC Classic, the first thing that came to my mind as Zenyatta crossed the finish line was “This one’s for you, Ruffian!”

2009 was an awesome year for racing. On both sides of the pond. Can 2010 top it off?

Okay, I’ll try RttR this year.. although most of my choices aren’t terribly serious! Your blog and TBA are what got me into horse racing in 2007, so it’s neat to see everyone’s stables. Sleipnir is a great name, by the way!

When I saw the name of the colt back in December I wondered if he was owned by a family in my native hometown. My long-held user name ‘Glimmerglass’ is the name for the body of water that Cooperstown NY (perhaps better known for being the Baseball Hall of Fame) is nestled along side.

The Cardiff Giant has been on display at the Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown NY since 1948 and I’ve seen ‘him’ many a time at that respected sister museum to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

To add to the equine connection, both the aforementioned Hall of Fame as well as the Farmer’s Museum [including the 'Cardiff Giant'] are owned by the Clark family, led today by Jane Forbes Clark. Her late mother owned and campaigned the great ‘Hoist The Flag’ among many horses.

Do you know how the original owners of this one-time claimer chose the name? You’d think he would’ve been sired by Giant Causeway but nope.
