Youngest horse + youngest jockey = Preakness win Lookin At Lucky finally had his luck change, and another Preakness is in the books. While Lucky’s win was not unexpected, First Dude and Jackson Bend’s efforts to round out the trifecta were a little more surprising. First Dude showed he’s more than just a colt saddled [...] Can Calvin win back-to-back Preaknesses? The Preakness draw will take place this evening at 5 pm, but post position is much less of an issue at Pimlico – especially as the field size has been decreased with the absence of Hurricane Ike, who is out with a leg injury. A Little Warm was declared [...] Calvin may run out of fingers on which to count Derby wins Another Kentucky Derby is in the books, and for the third time in four years, Calvin Borel’s name appears in the record. Todd Pletcher finally got his long-elusive Derby win, as did WinStar Farms. Super Saver became the second son of Maria’s Mon [...] Just add water (and possibly hail) While I was certainly not alone in failing to pick the Derby winner on purpose last year, we did win the pool at the Derby party we attended, but it was entirely accidental – when we got down to the last few options, Mine That Bird stuck out only [...] Look, only 13! The revolving door continues – Endorsement is officially out of the Derby with an ankle fracture he picked up in his work this morning. There had been considerable online chatter that things were not entirely ‘right’ with the horse earlier in the week; it seems those rumors were true. If nothing else, [...] Todd Pletcher's last, best hope After the frenzied game of musical chairs over the weekend, we now have a reasonably good sense of who is actually going in the Derby – and it’s certainly not Eskendereya or Rule (who, quite sensibly, now seems pointed for the Preakness). While it’s not clear whether the front wraps [...] Blinkers? Feh! We finally have a better sense of the Derby field as the contenders begin to move into Churchill Downs in earnest; Lookin At Lucky seemed to enjoy the track, working a bullet this morning. Livingston) While Eskendereya’s bandwagon continued to gather passengers with his Wood Memorial victory, Lookin At Lucky hit something of a bump in the road in the Santa Anita Derby – but what both races ‘mean’ is still very much up in the air. First, we’ll examine the Santa Anita [...] Can Eskendereya teach Todd to dance? Todd Pletcher finally looks like he has a real Derby horse. Granted, he could have something like eight in the starting gate, but the legitimate one runs on Saturday in the Wood Memorial. Eskendereya tops what should be a great race, facing off against other top Derby hopes including [...] Was Polyphemus in pursuit? The Tampa Bay Derby was, perhaps, last Saturday’s most dramatic race, and one can look at Odysseus’ win two ways – as a horse who gets himself into trouble (but still manages to win), or as a horse who fights to win despite the odds.
