After the frenzied game of musical chairs over the weekend, we now have a reasonably good sense of who is actually going in the Derby – and it’s certainly not Eskendereya or Rule (who, quite sensibly, now seems pointed for the Preakness). While it’s not clear whether the front wraps he wore in his Wood victory were a hint that something was slightly amiss, he will be missed – but in some ways, his defection makes the potential race more interesting – and certainly more wide-open. Lookin At Lucky is the obvious successor to take on the favorite mantle, but here are a few more Derby starters on whom I’ll be keeping a particularly close eye:

Noble’s Promise
I liked his finish in the Rebel, and he has had more than his share of poor luck this season; he could be due for a big race.

Sidney’s Candy
While I wish he had a good dirt prep on his resume, he seems more likely to make the transition more easily than many. But it’s nice to see Joe Talamo have a horse with a real shot, after the I Want Revenge situation last year.

Awesome Act
Another victim of bad luck in the past, we know he likes the mud – and he’s worth watching.

Devil May Care
Now we know she’s definitely in the Derby – and she deserves her spot (which is more than I can say for some of the colts we’ll likely be seeing – whether you agree with Beyer’s entire column or not, I think he’s right on with the notion that the earnings have become some sort of automatic Derby ticket, deserved or otherwise). And hey, she has namesakes in both a Jamie Cullum CD and a James Bond novel (albeit one by Sebastian Faulks). John Velazquez gets the mount.

Of course, we already have the field for the Oaks, and Blind Luck is the favorite. We’ll go more in-depth with the Oaks tomorrow (as well as commenting on the Derby draw), but Amen Hallelujah and Crisp are my other two (rather chalky) picks.
And the Oaks undercard is going to have one very special guest: Rachel Alexandra is running in the La Troienne. She’s back to her normal (for which read ‘rather spectacular’) work pattern, so hopefully we’ll see her turn the tables on Zardana – although I’m equally fine giving her another race to get back into her true form.

In the meantime, check out Hello Race Fans and The Rail for more, as there is plenty of quality racing-related writing on tap this week – and remember to tune in to Alex Brown’s radio show on Thursday, where I’ll be handing out some dubious Derby and Oaks wagering advice.

I leave you (until tomorrow!) with this thought: can Pletcher get another last-place finisher with Mission Impazible?

2-year-old male: Lookin at Lucky
As per usual with the juvenile awards, there was no surprise here. His three G1 wins sealed the deal, and he looks to improve this year. We’ll soon find out if he likes real dirt, but trainer Bob Baffert seems quite happy with things thus far.

2-year-old filly: She Be Wild
While this category had a little more competition, She Be Wild has a good backstory – former claimer, unwanted at auction wins four out of five, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Both dirt and turf could be in her future – versatility FTW!

Turf Male: Gio Ponti
A well-deserved bit of recognition for a horse who showed up just about everywhere – but who truly excelled on the grass. And the night was just beginning for him…

Turf Female: Goldikova
While I respect the notion that the Eclipse Award winner should have more than one start in the US, I am quite happy to toss that guideline out when the horse in question is as overwhelmingly superior as Goldikova is. Her repeat of Miesque’s back-to-back Mile victories, under the tutelage of Miesque’s former jockey, Freddie Head, completes an undeniably satisfying circuit – and the news that she’s aiming to capture a third Breeders’ Cup victory this year should certainly be rewarded. Given the excitement over Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, it may be difficult to recall that the opportunity to see a horse of Goldikova’s caliber is rare indeed – and it should be celebrated.

Steeplechaser: Mixed Up
How often does a 10-year-old PA-bred win an Eclipse Award? And hey, he doesn’t even take Lasix. These are Good Things.

Breeder: Juddmonte Farms
These awards tend to follow the money, and it’s certainly hard to argue with Juddmonte’s success in producing top-level horses. There were a few stray votes for Dolphus Morrison for breeding Rachel Alexandra – even if he did not want to truly unleash her talents.

Female Sprinter: Informed Decision
The overwhelming pick of her division (although one has to assume that Ventura’s positioning in both this category and the Turf Female category may have hurt her chances), Informed Decision won at nearly every track she visited, under a variety of conditions – and the best news is that she’ll be back later this spring to extend her winning streak.

Male Sprinter: Kodiak Kowboy
Although he had a respectable career as a 2 and 3-year-old, Kodiak Kowboy truly had the chance to prove himself as a 4-year-old, winning as a sprinter and miler. He goes to stud with a solid record of achievement.

3-year-old Male: Summer Bird
This was a no-brainer – but I am quite curious to know who cast the single vote for I Want Revenge. Trainer Tim Ice reiterated that we should be seeing him back on the track later this year; let’s hope his recovery continues in such an encouraging fashion.

3-year-old Female: Rachel Alexandra
The great filly took home the least-suspenseful award of the night – it was also the sole unanimous award (but more on that in a moment). Owner Jess Jackson’s acceptance speech was thoughtful, but at something approaching seven minutes, it could have used some judicious editing. But given that the award winners can’t speak for themselves, we can allow a little indulgence.

Owner: Godolphin Racing
This was one of the most competitive awards, with only five votes separating the winner from Jerry and Ann Moss. But as in the case of the Breeder category, the Eclipse voters tend to recognize revenue – but the narrow margin of victory demonstrates that there is also a desire to reward owners with a more personal touch.

Trainer: Steven Asmussen
Once again, you cannot argue with the numbers – or his great good fortune in having Rachel Alexandra drop into his lap (although her original trainer, Hal Wiggins, also received a few votes). While I may not be a fan of his record of medication violations, his staff clearly loves the horses they work with, so the award is as much an acknowledgement of their hard work.

Older Male: Gio Ponti
A double on the night for the versatile 4-year-old was clearly in the offing; as much as I love Einstein, based on this year’s wins, it had to go to Gio Ponti. He’s still flying under the radar in the eyes of the general public, and even the racing press sometimes overlooks his accomplishments, so it was entirely justified that he be doubly rewarded. The Blood-Horse points out that he is the first horse to win this award without a win on traditional dirt – so it’s particularly interesting. His future plans may involve the Dubai World Cup – that could end up a very competitive race indeed.

Older Female: Zenyatta
While this was another foregone conclusion, there was a single (protest?) vote from someone at the Daily Racing Form for Icon Project – presumably the backstory there will be revealed at some point. While I still believe she should have been crowned Horse of the Year last year, the news that she will return to the track this year means she may finally get to take home that honor; in any case, winning two consecutive Eclipse Awards and making history in the Breeders’ Cup Classic is certainly enough to consider without worrying about Horse of the Year – yet.

Apprentice Jockey: Christian Santiago Reyes
Further proof that Puerto Rico knows what it’s doing when it trains jockeys, this 19-year-old has a bright future – he would be wise to study the next winner.

Jockey: Julien Leparoux
It’s hard to imagine he won the Eclipse for Apprentice only four years ago – it seems he’s had nothing but success since arriving in the US. Clearly, the title of his Facebook fan group is on the right track.

Horse of the Year: Rachel Alexandra
In the end, it wasn’t even close: the votes were 130 to 99. That in no way reflects poorly on Zenyatta’s accomplishments – it simply honors the fact that during the past racing season, Rachel Alexandra had more opportunities to show off her immense talent, in a wider variety of venues – she won for her efforts throughout the year, not for a single race (regardless of how impressive that race may have been). But as I have said before, while Horse of the Year honors are important to some, a firm place in history means more in the long run. If we are lucky enough to see Rachel Alexandra take on Zenyatta, that would be tremendous – I’d like to see a Best of Five race series at a variety of different tracks. The difficulty will be getting other horses (male or female) into the gate to fill a race – but someone should certainly be working to set that up. Any takers?

The collective connections of the fillies in the Alabama are no doubt breathing a sigh of relief at the absence of Rachel Alexandra. Without her long shadow looming over them, we get the chance to note that they are a nice group – they may not be as freakishly talented, but they have, for the most part, performed well elsewhere. I earned a bit of money on Funny Moon last time out, and I like seeing her here again facing a number of competitors she’s beaten before. She also has the services of Alan Garcia, who has been on fire at Saratoga – and while I also like Don’t Forget Gil and Be Fair, Funny Moon is the one to beat. While none of them may match up to previous winners like Miss Woodford, our featured horse this month, or twentieth-century Alabama champions like Vagrancy, Go For Wand or Silverbulletday, they are a good group that could progress down the line.

But it’s not just the fillies worried about Rachel Alexandra’s next start – Charitable Man’s next race will also depend on where she goes. While the Travers has been the goal, he will point elsewhere if she goes. Naturally, for my own convenience I’d like to see her in the Pennsylvania Derby – but we should have a fine Travers on tap either way. I’ll be handing out no doubt ill-thought-out commentary on the Travers next week on the airwaves, but please do tune in anyway!

And so, on to season two of ‘Jockeys,’ which kicks off tonight; this time around, it’s the lead-up to the Derby. For the committed racing fan, that means a large part of the drama will be somewhat lacking, but I’m particularly interested to see the activity around I Want Revenge – how did Animal Planet avoid getting slapped by a lawsuit? It seems everyone else involved got one. Monsters and Critics has details on each episode and it sounds as though each one will be fairly self-contained, with a slightly deeper focus than the first-season episodes. Garrett Gomez and Corey Nakatani seem cast as the villains to a certain extent, although one imagines (hopes?) it will be a little more complex upon viewing.

In any event, it’s a welcome return for a show that sheds a little more light on the industry to a wider audience.

Yesterday, I suggested we wait and see where Mine That Bird will fit in Kentucky Derby history; today, however, it’s time to recap the weekend’s racing and in that context, his Derby victory is still something to puzzle over.

It goes without saying that there was no greater spectacle in racing than Rachel Alexandra’s utterly dominant (and utterly effortless) performance in the Kentucky Oaks. Her twenty-and-a-bit length victory was all the more awe-inspiring since she looked like she was out for a stroll – there was never the least sign of exertion, and Calvin Borel had plenty of time to pat her neck and celebrate in the stretch. Imagine what she could be capable of if actually asked to run – it’s an exciting thought. While her owner has ruled her out of other Triple Crown races (despite the fact that those showcases for ‘future stallions‘ are now headlined by a gelding), I wonder if we could perhaps see her in the Travers or the Whitney – I’ve already said I’d love to see her face Zenyatta in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (although that’s also the goal for my beloved Einstein).

And so to Einstein – his repeat victory in the Woodford Reserve on Saturday was thrilling – why NBC couldn’t show that rather than a trickle of D-list celebrities is beyond me (and for some reason the Guardian is praising their coverage, which veered from ‘nothing special’ to ‘downright irritating’). What they missed out was a fabulous stretch duel between Einstein and Cowboy Cal – Einstein clearly didn’t love the soft turf, but he was equally clearly not going to let Cowboy Cal pass him. It was yet another memorable performance – if it’s still the legal issues keeping him in training, may the litigation long continue. After the race, trainer Helen Pitts-Blasi remarked:

“I’m not going to say he’s the best horse in the country,” Pitts-Blasi said. “I’ll let you know on Nov. 6. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is a possibility. He loved that track at Santa Anita, and with the Breeders’ Cup being there, it’s worth a shot.”

Sounds like a plan.

Finally, there was the Kentucky Derby itself. We attended a Derby party that involved fantastic tacos, newborn foals (including a filly born early that morning to former reality TV star Sharp as a Fox) and a betting pool. We’d placed actual bets on horses including Musket Man, Friesan Fire, Pioneerof the Nile and Papa Clem, but also took turns picking some for the aforementioned pool. By about the second time around the room, pickings were looking a little slimmer, so Mr. Superfecta started going by jockeys – and picked Calvin Borel.

While everyone agrees the call was not Tom Durkin’s finest hour, we weren’t doing much better – we all spent the last 40 seconds or so of the race shouting, ‘but who is that on the rail?!?’

Stunned, we took home the pool.

As I’ve mentioned already, I’m going to wait to see how the Preakness and Belmont turn out for Mine That Bird before making a decision about where he ‘belongs’ – but there were certainly plenty of excuses to go around. Desert Party came out of the race with an ankle injury that should keep him out until next year and Friesan Fire grabbed a quarter while getting his legs sliced up a bit – but he could be back in time for the Preakness. For the top finishers, including Pioneerof the Nile, Musket Man and Papa Clem, the surface is the obvious go-to – but it’s likely we will see all three of them in Baltimore on the 16th. Late scratch I Want Revenge may appear at the Travers, but that would be the earliest he might rejoin the fray.

And as for Mine That Bird himself, I’ve always had a soft sport for the little horses (like his daddy Birdstone, or speedy mare Megahertz) who prove you don’t need to be a 17 hand monster to win in this game – if you want to get in on the action, his half-brother is a late addition to the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale.

So it seems all roads lead to Baltimore (or at least Timonium)…

Without further ado, here is your official Superfecta Kentucky Derby handicapping exercise for 2009 – as ever, with the note that my recent successes with Smarty Jones and Barbaro are tempered by the fact that my last correctly-predicted winner was Winning Colors in 1988. You have been warned.

1) West Side Bernie
Upside: Seems to be improving, has some good seasoning. Second to I Want Revenge last time out.
Downside: Not sure he wants the distance – or if he’s fast enough

2) Musket Man
Upside: Keeps looking better and better in retrospect
Downside: Not a huge fan of jockey Eibar Coa

3) Mr. Hot Stuff
Upside: I like trainer Eoin Harty
Downside: Looks like a sprinter/miler

4) Advice
Upside: Nice move in his last race
Downside: Polytrack specialist

5) Hold Me Back
Upside: Not among the very best, but could hit the board
Downside: Does he also prefer Polytrack?

6) Friesan Fire
Upside: Love the breeding, love his versatility
Downside: Layoff could be a downside – or could leave him fresh

7) Papa Clem
Upside: Love his recent old-school workout and everything else
Downside: Rain?

          Mine That Bird
Upside: Can win…
Downside: …but not in this company

9) Join in the Dance
Upside: Still looking for one
Downside: Rabbit

10) Regal Ransom
Upside: Love Alan Garcia on just about anything
Downside: UAE form still a question mark

11) Chocolate Candy
Upside: Great breeding, great form in California
Downside: First time on real dirt; wet track might not suit

12) General Quarters
Upside: Great story, continual improvement, love switch to Julien Leparoux
Downside: Is he fast enough?

13) I Want Revenge
Upside: Looks very, very tough to beat; like Joe Talamo
Downside: Mullins et al. do not appeal

14) Atomic Rain
Upside: Let me know when you find one
Downside: Yes

15) Dunkirk
Upside: Florida Derby performance; high Tomlinson rating
Downside: Curlin couldn’t do it with so few races

16) Pioneerof the Nile
Upside: California record; possibility that Bode Baffert will sing in the winner’s circle
Downside: Low Beyers – and the dirt question

17) Summer Bird
Upside: I like his pedigree…
Downside: …but not on 3 lifetime starts

18) Nowhere to Hide
Upside: Um…Nick Zito surprise? Likes an off track?
Downside: Seems entirely outclassed

19) Desert Party
Upside: Breeding, previous record
Downside: What did he beat in Dubai?

20) Flying Private
Upside: *crickets*
Downside: Indeed

Preferences: I’d love to see a Friesan Fire/Papa Clem/Chocolate Candy/General Quarters superfecta.
Prediction – dry track: I Want Revenge/Friesan Fire/Papa Clem/General Quarters
Prediction – wet track: Friesan Fire/General Quarters/Dunkirk/I Want Revenge

Wagering to be determined tomorrow, probably en route to the Derby party I’ll be attending – check back later today for some semi-liveblogging of Kentucky Oaks day!

If the predicted deluge does indeed materialize around post time, I’m leaning toward a Friesan Fire/General Quarters/Dunkirk trifecta (even though I’m not otherwise on the Dunkirk bandwagon). However, I could also see a replay of the Louisiana Derby if things get really muddy – Papa Clem could get up for second behind Friesan Fire again.

However, high Tomlinson ratings alone aren’t going to raise Join in the Dance or Nowhere to Hide much in my estimation – but it could mean that even with a sloppy track, Join in the Dance tears away to set a fairly wicked pace. Although I really like Chocolate Candy, if it’s coming up very damp, I may decide it won’t be his afternoon (and I’d have the perfect excuse to toss Pioneerof the Nile entirely). I can’t decide where I Want Revenge figures in the event of truly bad weather – but given how quickly the track dries at Churchill Downs, it’s likely an outside possibility. Still, it’s good to be prepared.

Here’s hoping the weather holds off long enough that we get to see Zenyatta run tomorrow (and that we have a good view of Rachel Alexandra demolishing the Oaks field). More to come then…

It’s rather refreshing to see that two very talented horses are being handled with such caution – both should be back later in the season once they have fully returned to fighting shape.

The Blood-Horse reports that in addition to coverage in peculiar places like Access Hollywood, there is also promotion of the Derby via BlogHer (‘an iVillage partner‘ – and I should mention that back in the day I used to work with one of the founders of BlogHer at Women.com, which was eventually subsumed by iVillage). This is news to me, despite the fact that I am a BlogHer member – I have yet to see anything racing-related over there that isn’t just a feed from my site. I had to miss yesterday’s NTRA/blogger conference call since it was scheduled for my usual train home, but I wonder if it was mentioned at all in that discussion. I’d be very curious to see exactly what sort of promotion the BlogHer deal covered – but I digress, back to the horses!

The weather report is looking fairly ominous for Oaks Day at this point; while it should be better on Saturday, just in case the wet weather stays on one wonders what that means for Papa Clem (sure, he was still second in the slop on Louisiana Derby day, but it was a long way back behind Friesan Fire), or if this indeed hands an advantage to Friesan Fire (whose lightning-fast workout was the subject of much discussion yesterday). Checking everyone’s Tomlinson ratings after the field is set will no doubt be in order this year – just in case.

All the contenders are getting their final works in; Chocolate Candy worked yesterday as well, with I Want Revenge burning up the track earlier today – it was ‘GREAT‘ according to jockey Joe Talamo (who seems to have become quite the media property this week – well done to him for staying cool under that sort of pressure) – and I should add that I Want Revenge did not sell himself short either. Tomorrow’s post position draw won’t be televised, but I’m sure it will be very popular on Twitter as well…

I Want Revenge
Pros: His thoroughly impressive Wood Memorial victory alone would put him at the top of the list, but add in some interesting Argentine breeding on his dam’s side and you have a very compelling mix of speed and endurance. He’s getting great service from young Joe Talamo and one imagines Animal Planet would love to see a win here.

Cons: In a word: people. Jeff Mullins and IEAH joining forces do not a positive storyline make (depending on the context for ‘positive’ of course). Still, it’s hardly the horse’s fault and one hopes they are sensible enough to stay in the background this time – let Talamo take any human accolades.

Friesan Fire
Pros: Another interesting pedigree – A.P. Indy matched with Aussie speed, and a sympathetic industry (and news media) that would like to see Larry Jones retire on a win – it would be a great boost for jockey Gabriel Saez as well.

Cons: While I don’t love the ‘training up to the Derby’ path, I’m presuming Jones knows the horse (pictured) a lot better than I do. It doesn’t hurt come Belmont time to have a reasonably fresh runner.

Chocolate Candy
Pros: Love that he’s by Candy Ride and he looks like the sort of horse who will appreciate being able to close on the Derby free-for-all – he’s fast when it counts.

Cons: The Derby will be his first start outside California; so far he seems to like the Churchill Downs surface, but it’s still an unknown factor on race day.

General Quarters
Pros: The feel-good story of the year so far; has a great jockey in Julien Leparoux. Tends to be flying at the end.

Cons: Distance could be a factor; ditto the step up in class.

Papa Clem
Pros: He’s been my dark horse for a while – has been steadily improving and is proven on real dirt. It seems a son (or daughter) of Smart Strike will win the Derby at some point – perhaps this year. And hey, he’s beaten I Want Revenge.

Cons: Weather could be a factor – he obviously didn’t love the slop in the Louisiana Derby.

Quality Road
Pros: Very impressive Florida Derby win, never out of the money and another one with some Antipodean breeding on his dam’s side.

Cons: Yes, the quarter crack seems to be less of a factor – but would it hold up through June?

Pioneerof the Nile
Pros: Great California record (although I believe had he been healthy, The Pamplemousse would have beaten him) and keeps Garrett Gomez, who is hungry for a Derby win.

Cons: The huge surface question mark – word is he’s enjoying it so far (to say the least), so we’ll see; lowish Beyers are also a worry (and I still loathe the way his name is spelled).

Regal Ransom
Pros: Looked considerably more impressive than stablemate Desert Party in the UAE Derby and should go off at a price.

Cons: Longshot status is probably deserved; the ‘train in Dubai’ tactic hasn’t worked so far for the Derby.

Musket Man
Pros: Steady progress this season in races that seemed better in retrospect than on the day.

Cons: Can he get a mile and a quarter?

Hold Me Back
Pros: Very fast closer – if the race falls apart, look for him to pull a Giacomo.

Cons: Big step up in class could be too much to overcome.

Finally, here’s a question – why is there no Derby DataTrack this year? I’ll be spending even more time with Railbird’s data as a result…

Perhaps most notable is that Garrett Gomez officially committed to ride Pioneerof the Nile (and I tip my hat to him for adding a little drama to the proceedings – I presume this will appear in a future episode of ‘Jockeys’ – along with Joe Talamo pledging $25,000 to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans should I Want Revenge win).

A few more horses are quite sensibly leaving the Derby trail; Giant Oak will likely head back to the turf and Big Drama will wait for the Preakness, but some I really don’t rate are sticking with the Derby plan – those would include Mine That Bird and Win Willy. Summer Bird looks more like a Belmont horse to me, but he’s also planning to have a go in Kentucky.

While I did consider adding Advice (whom I definitely prefer of the two Todd Pletcher trainees – at least at this point in the season), in the end, this week’s top ten is a rerun of last week’s edition:

1) I Want Revenge
2) Friesan Fire
3) Chocolate Candy
4) General Quarters
5) Papa Clem
6) Quality Road
7) Pioneerof the Nile
Regal Ransom
9) Musket Man
10) Hold Me Back

It’s very hard for me to separate the top six; I have something a mental break in between Quality Road (who would be in the first or second spot without the quarter crack) and Pioneerof the Nile in the seventh position; if I had to pick the winner today, it would be one of those six.

That narrows it down, doesn’t it?

It will be interesting to see if his good recent form in Florida translates back to Kentucky; in any case, it’s probably unlikely that many other Derby starters started their careers in a 14K claimer at Churchill Downs. It’s worth reflecting that his eleven lifetime starts give him nearly four times as much racing experience as, say, Dunkirk.

Hold Me Back and Massone both finished the race well too – Massone will head to more synthetic surfaces in California, while Hold Me Back is on track for a Derby berth.

Also likely to make the field now is the aforementioned Dunkirk – largely because Arkansas Derby runner-up Old Fashioned has a date with Rood & Riddle, rather than Churchill Downs. They grey colt fractured his knee (although it was not apparent at any point during the race) and we’ve very likely seen the last of him on the track (given his value at stud), so Coolmore’s Dunkirk is left to carry the Unbridled’s Song banner in the Derby (and make of that what you will – this is owner Rick Porter’s third prominent Unbridled’s Song offspring to meet with a serious injury on the Derby trail, after Rockport Harbor and, of course, Eight Belles).

But it was a very interesting race; I was glad to see Papa Clem finally get a big win (pictured), since I felt he’d been flying under the radar for far too long (and his win vaulted me to the top of the Brooklyn Backstretch Road to the Roses league). He’s been steadily improving (and getting some bad luck along the way) and while his 99 Beyer for the Arkansas Derby wasn’t earth-shattering, I think he’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.
