<p>But it was a satisfying exit; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Champs Elysees</span> <a href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/108227.html">capped his career</a> in style, by going out on a win in the Canadian International. He beat a thoroughly <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5jjwSJu2brWqtEsBtcik-dv5wRUqg">professional field</a> that included <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jukebox Jury</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Quijano</span>, and he is now off to join his brothers, <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.juddmonte.co.uk/stallions/dansili/default.aspx">Dansili</a> and <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.juddmonte.co.uk/stallions/cacique/default.aspx">Cacique</a>, at Banstead Manor Stud. It will be interesting to see how they price him, given the economy and the fact that Juddmonte is rather awash in <span style="font-weight: bold;">Danehill</span>-<span style="font-weight: bold;">Hasili</span> stallions &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dansili</span> is already a proven sire, with notable offspring including Arc winner <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.juddmonte.co.uk/stallions/raillink/default.aspx">Rail Link</a> (also a Juddmonte stallion) and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zambezi Sun</span>, but <span style="font-weight: bold;">Champs Elysees</span> has had a more varied racing career, including G1 wins &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dansili</span> never won a G1 race. Fellow G1-winning brother <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cacique&#8217;s</span> fee is officially private, while <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dansili</span> stands for £65,000 &#8211; will <span style="font-weight: bold;">Champs Elysees</span> sit somewhere in the middle, or come in at a lower rate as the junior partner?</p>
<p>And so to some racing that may have more of an impact on the Breeders&#8217; Cup &#8211; the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horseracing/6367176/Breeders-Cup-Classic-on-agenda-for-Twice-Over.html">Newmarket Champion Stakes</a>. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Twice Over</span> (something of a stablemate to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Champs Elysees</span> in the sense that both reside under the very large Juddmonte banner) was the winner and while he has earned a spot in the Turf, he may instead follow the European crowd to the Classic. Something of an underachiever at 3 and earlier this year (despite a race record full of glittering opponents, including <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sea the Stars</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Vision d&#8217;Etat</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tartan Bearer</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raven&#8217;s Pass</span> &#8211; who finished behind <span style="font-weight: bold;">Twice Over</span> in the Craven Stakes), he has recently come into his own. On Saturday, he beat a fine field including favo(u)red <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fame &amp; Glory</span> (an unthreatening 7th &#8211; he may have been tired from a season of chasing <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sea the Stars</span>) and held off strong efforts from <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mawatheeq</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sariska</span>. Unfortunately neither will be coming to the Breeders&#8217; Cup &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sariska</span> is <a href="http://www.racingpost.com/horses/home.sd?story=644244&amp;argument=719953">getting a break</a> before aiming for next year&#8217;s Arc &#8211; but it seems likely we&#8217;ll see both next year. As for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Twice Over</span>, he&#8217;s flying slightly under the radar (at least compared to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rip Van Winkle</span>) &#8211; you may want to make note of him.</p>
<p>Also hoping to go out <a href="http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/turf-santa-anita-tilt-could-be-last-red-rocks-run/644852/breederscup/">on a win</a> like <span style="font-weight: bold;">Champs Elysees</span> is <span style="font-weight: bold;">Red Rocks</span>, winner of the 2006 Turf &#8211; but with a slight difference. If a stallion deal for the 6-year-old is not finalized before the Breeders&#8217; Cup, he&#8217;ll head to Fasig-Tipton a few days after the race for the auction block. Someone could pick up a bargain &#8211; although if <span style="font-weight: bold;">Spanish Moon</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Conduit</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dar Re Mi</span> do show up, he&#8217;ll have his work cut out for him.</p>
<p>Other horses operating in stealth mode (but who appear on the <a href="http://www.breederscup360.com/docs/bcpossibles.pdf">Breeders&#8217; Cup possibles</a> list &#8211; PDF warning) include <span style="font-weight: bold;">Stardom Bound</span> &#8211; she may not have lived up to her potential in the spring, but she&#8217;s been working toward redemption in the Filly &amp; Mare Classic. Whether her strong workouts will translate back into a win in the afternoon remains to be seen &#8211; but the prospect of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span> losing to &#8216;Baby Z&#8217; (or to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Music Note</span> or <span style="font-weight: bold;">Icon Project</span>) should send her to the &#8216;classic&#8217; Classic (where her name presently does not appear) &#8211; a good finish behind just about anyone in this potential field still says a lot. We should know reasonably soon, in either case.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll look at other possible Breeders&#8217; Cup matchups later, but if <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=732825">Radiohead</a> does come for the Juvenile, will he prove fitter/happier than the local boys?</p>

The was naturally disappointment in Camp Superfecta over <span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein&#8217;s</span> tough trip in <a href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/51230/macho-again-denies-einstein-in-foster">the Stephen Foster</a> (and let&#8217;s give credit to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Macho Again</span> for putting in a fine performance), but the fact that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein</span> still managed to get up for third after finally getting some racing room was heartening. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Asiatic Boy</span> definitely showed he&#8217;s looking to make an impact on American racing as well with a nice second-place finish.</p>
<p>Off the track, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Quality Road</span> continues to work toward a return to the races, but it will be under a different trainer – he&#8217;s been taken from Jimmy Jerkins and sent <a href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/51253/quality-road-sent-to-pletcher">to Todd Pletcher</a> (along with five of his stablemates, although not all went into a Pletcher barn). Make of that what you will. <span style="font-weight: bold;"> Friesan Fire</span> is also recovering well from injury, although his return to training seems <a href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/51249/friesan-fire-old-fashioned-recuperating">further in the future</a>.</p>
<p>And so, to Ascot – first, <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,306047,00.html">the Queen Anne Stakes</a> will likely produce a few Breeders&#8217; Cup Mile entrants; it featured <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gladiatorus</span>, whose effort in the Dubai Duty Free earned him the <a href="http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/gladiatorus-remains-worlds-top-active-racehorse/188244/">world&#8217;s top racehorse</a> ranking, as well as <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paco Boy</span>, who <a href="http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12426_5383760,00.html">ended up winning</a> despite doubts about his ability to handle the distance. It&#8217;s difficult to know what to make of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gladiatorus </span>after such a lackluster performance &#8211; perhaps he just doesn&#8217;t like Royal Ascot. In case you are keeping track, the next set of rankings comes out on June 24th &#8211; in the last edition, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Paco Boy</span> was just under <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span> (and two ahead of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rachel Alexandra</span>). Clearly some serious number crunching is going to be taking place this week.</p>
<p><a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,306048,00.html">The King&#8217;s Stand Stakes</a> again proved that the <a href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/horse-racing/scenic-blast-continues-aussie-dominance-at-ascot/2009/06/17/1244918042485.html">Aussies produce great sprinters</a>; favored <span style="font-weight: bold;">Scenic Blast</span> (pictured) <a href="http://www.racingandsports.com.au/racing/rsNewsArt.asp?NID=153254&amp;story=ROYAL_ASCOT:_Helping_Hand_For_Scenic_Blast">easily defeated</a> tough Irish filly <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fleeting Spirit</span> and the rest of the field. (You may recall <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fleeting Spirit</span> finished fourth in the Breeders&#8217; Cup Turf Sprint last year). This marks the fourth time a horse from Down Under has captured this race. Clearly, the 4-year-old gelding is ready to take on the mantle – if <span style="font-weight: bold;">Takeover Target</span> wants to give it up. (He&#8217;ll be running on Saturday in the Golden Jubilee Stakes – and it&#8217;s possible <span style="font-weight: bold;">Scenic Blast</span> will as well &#8211; but so far only <span style="font-weight: bold;">Takeover Target</span> is <a href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/horse-racing/crowe-the-target-for-a-nag-to-riches-ride/2009/06/12/1244664851036.html">having a film made</a> about his life).</p>
<p><a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,306049,00.html">The St. James&#8217;s Palace Stakes</a> was won last year by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span>; this year, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mastercraftsman</span> <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/jun/16/royal-ascot-mastercraftsmen-ballydoyle">rewarded his many backers</a> when the heavy favorite took the race. There would seem to be something of an iron-bound convention that an Aidan O&#8217;Brien trainee must win this race – <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mastercraftsman</span> is the sixth. Whether he will want to contest the Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic remains to be seen, however; one mile seems to be his ideal distance. His victory today was exciting, but <a href="http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12426_5383932,00.html">very close</a> – I would imagine he&#8217;d be sticking with the Breeders&#8217; Cup Mile come the fall if he makes the journey.<br /><a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,314632,00.html"><br />The Coventry Stakes</a> was won by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Canford Cliffs</span>; it&#8217;s a bit early to say where the 2-year-olds will all fit but it’s no bad thing to remain unbeaten – even if it&#8217;s only in two starts. Some are already <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5gAGLwxfQCb4A_RJLma9LYdxCBstw">labeling him a freak</a>, though, so he bears watching.</p>
<p>American-bred <span style="font-weight: bold;">Judgethemoment</span> won the 2-mile <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,314633,00.html">Ascot Stakes</a> – who says we don&#8217;t breed distance horses any more? That said, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Judgethemoment</span> is by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Judge T C</span> – the same <span style="font-weight: bold;">Judge T C</span> who went from a modest stud fee in New York to an even more modest $2500 in Pennsylvania (via a brief high spot in Kentucky) – he&#8217;s now <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/breeding-news/2006/March/08/Judge-T-C-sold-to-stand-in-Saudi-Arabia.aspx">in Saudi Arabia</a>. Someone got a deal. But there’s some speed in his bloodline somewhere as well – his half-brother <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.pedigreequery.com/olympic+express">Olympic Express</a> (also known as <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ecclesiastical</span>) won the Hong Kong Mile, the Hong Kong Derby and the Hong Kong Classic Mile. And just because this is the internet, I managed to scare up <a href="http://pets.webshots.com/photo/1291448897011359752gaIqPb">some</a> <a href="http://pets.webshots.com/photo/1291448927011359752IisOJq">pictures</a> <a href="http://www.nybreds.com/foals/foalb_05/hickory_hill_05.html">of</a> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Judgethemoment</span> as a foal. And if you wanted to see his <a href="http://pets.webshots.com/album/559078438aNpfdq">2-year-old half sister</a> by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Cry</span>, be my guest. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Judgethemoment&#8217;s</span> trainer, Jane Chappel-Hyam, is doing awfully well, considering this is only her fourth year training on her own.</p>
<p>And finally for today, <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,314634,00.html">the Windsor Castle Stakes</a>; while not quite as prestigious as the other races on the card, we can be proud that an actual American-based horse won – <span style="font-weight: bold;">Strike The Tiger</span> is a 2-year-old gelding trained <a href="http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&amp;id=39868">by Wesley Ward</a>. Given that there hasn&#8217;t even been an American-trained runner at Royal Ascot since 2005, it&#8217;s quite a coup – even if it&#8217;s just in a listed stakes and not one of the Group 1 events scattered throughout the meet. John Velazquez was the winning jockey, so it&#8217;s an American triumph all around. The second-place finisher, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fratellino</span>, had quite an experience jump on the winner – today&#8217;s race was already his eighth lifetime start. Ward has a number of other runners giving Royal Ascot a go (<a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.examiner.com/x-12303-Horse-Racing-Examiner%7Ey2009m6d16-American-impresses-with-strong-finish-at-Royal-Ascot">Cannonball</a><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span>already finished behind <span style="font-weight: bold;">Scenic Blast</span> earlier today) – it&#8217;s a very good beginning.</p>
<p>Tomorrow&#8217;s highlights should include the Jersey Stakes with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gallagher</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Donativum</span>, the Windsor Forest Stakes with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lush Lashes</span>, the Prince of Wales&#8217;s Stakes with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tartan Bearer</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Vision d&#8217;Etat</span> and the Queen Mary Stakes featuring <span style="font-weight: bold;">Capercailli</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">e</span> – or perhaps you&#8217;ll want to back another Wesley Ward trainee in <span style="font-weight: bold;">Jealous Again</span>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.superfectablog.com/">Check back</a> Wednesday for more!</p>

<p>Zarkava</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Goldikova</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> are tied for 3-year-old filly (which seems fair), and the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/international-news/2008/November/12/Five-nominated-for-European-Horse-of-the-Year.aspx">Horse of the Year</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> category lets you wonder what each of these horses could have done had they not been retired: it&#8217;s down to </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Zarkava</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Raven&#8217;s Pass</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">,</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">and</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > New Approach</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">. I&#8217;m awarding </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Zarkava</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> about 500 bonus style points &#8211; is that enough to get her un-retired? If I back </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Crowded House</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for top <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/international-news/2008/November/12/Five-nominated-for-European-Horse-of-the-Year.aspx">2-year-old colt</a> will he also retire next year in a terrible recurring dream? I suppose it doesn&#8217;t pay to make predictions sleeping on an unmade bed. Even Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire couldn&#8217;t conquer the blue sky&#8230;I&#8217;ll stop now.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Moving on&#8230;</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>The </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Curlin</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> ownership saga continues as Jess Jackson aims to purchase the outstanding 20% in a private bid; however, even that will require </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/48046.htm">further litigation</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">A hearing on the private-sale motion is scheduled to be heard Nov. 17, but [Special Judge Roger ] Crittenden, following some forceful discussion by various attorneys involved in the litigation, from the bench set a Dec. 1 hearing where evidence will be presented either supporting or opposing the latest effort to sell the minority interest.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone can have their say,&#8221; Crittenden said.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">At least all the attorneys involved will have a chance to top up their billable hours right before the holidays; someone certainly should get a bonus out of this.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>It seems we will (fingers crossed) indeed be seeing more of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Zenyatta</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> next year; she&#8217;s having a bit of a break and may not return until </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99881.html">later in the spring</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, but I&#8217;ll take it.</span></p>

Who will be retired? Who is coming back? What are they aiming for? We know the answers for a number of the winners (and contenders) already, but the list is far from complete. In no real particular order, here&#8217;s what&#8217;s next for some of the stars who ran last weekend:</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"></p>
<p>Ventura</span> held off <span style="font-weight: bold;">Indian Blessing</span> in the Filly &amp; Mare Sprint &#8212; will we see either of them next year? No word yet.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">One imagines we will see much more of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Maram</span>, winner of the Juvenile Filly Turf, although I wonder if she&#8217;ll be shipped to Europe in search of more suitable races.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Upset Turf Sprint victor <span style="font-weight: bold;">Desert Code</span> could </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/47762/breeders-cup-postscript-all-is-well">head to Hong Kong</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> before ending his season, while Sprint winner <span style="font-weight: bold;">Midnight Lute</span> will likely be retired &#8212; trainer Bob Baffert suggested that there are simply </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/47762/breeders-cup-postscript-all-is-well">no races</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in which to enter him. <span style="font-weight: bold;"> Fleeting Spirit</span>, however, will be back for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5iD7goq6keWna-DuWLpJUHXesvDyg">another try</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the Turf Sprint next year.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>The Dirt Mile was <span style="font-weight: bold;">Albertus Maximus&#8217;</span> third start for Croat trainer and </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/tennisNews/idUKN2422588620081025">noted kinesiologist</a> <span style="font-family:verdana;">Vladimir Cerin;</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">apparently we will indeed see him</span> <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99506.html">next year</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. It had already been determined that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lewis Michael</span> would go to Three Chimneys </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=3554900">for 2009</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, so he&#8217;s probably on his way there now. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Well Armed</span> may not have liked the pace on the day, but the tough gelding will </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99506.html">keep on running</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Juvenile Turf winner <span style="font-weight: bold;">Donativum</span> has many options &#8211; but as a gelding one that is not open to him is the 2000 Guineas in England. As a result, trainer John Gosden may point him toward the Kentucky Derby &#8211; he confirms it&#8217;s an option they are </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=3667706">seriously considering</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. Plans for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Midshipman</span>, winner of the more traditionally Derby-linked Juvenile, are perhaps more fluid &#8211; he may stay in the US, or he may be </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/27/sports/othersports/27racing.html?ref=othersports">sent to Dubai</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>If I had to pick a Derby horse at this point based on their two-year-old form leading up to last weekend, I&#8217;d only have one horse in mind. If I were choosing based on their performance in the Breeders&#8217; Cup, it&#8217;s still the same horse &#8212; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Stardom Bound</span>. Unfortunately there&#8217;s still </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more_sports/2008/10/24/2008-10-24_stardom_bound_eclipses_the_rest.html">no official word</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> whether she&#8217;ll still be sold in the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, but I&#8217;m hopeful her performance was enough to keep her racing, even if sold.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Filly &amp; Mare Turf winner and </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.kentucky.com/302/story/567664.html">Guinness enthusiast</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Forever Together</span> is likely to remain in training </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=13242">next year</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Muhannak&#8217;s</span> connections hope he will </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5h9U3H8IomI-GZpOahyvmtWJlm0Hg">defend his victory</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Marathon again next year. Marathon favorite <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sixties Icon</span>, whose trainer, Jeremy Noseda, felt the horse received a </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5iD7goq6keWna-DuWLpJUHXesvDyg">poor ride</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> from Frankie Dettori, will be headed to either the Japan Cup or the Hong Kong Vase next.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>The very welcome news that we should see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span> aim for a </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hwoG4zbpWFMdNk62LLMoNaJiCE3g">repeat win</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Mile next year should dispel some of the gloom over the list of retirements; not only did she bring the most electrifying closing kick to the weekend (even outranking <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta&#8217;s</span>, in my opinion), but her connections make a fantastic story. How often does a jockey win the Mile on the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=20&amp;ContentID=104343">same filly twice</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, then return years later as a winning trainer with another outstanding European filly? I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing more of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span> (although I was already a fan, having watched how she beat <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> and how close she came to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zarkava</span>), just as I followed </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miesque">Miesque</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. The lesson seems to be one worth learning: always bet the French-based filly (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Miesque</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Six Perfections</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span>) in the Mile.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"></p>
<p>Conduit</span> is looking to repeat his win in the Turf </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99506.html">next year</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">; his connections seem to feel the St. Leger winner is improving with every race. It is likely </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5jxoa7xyJUuuOfp22DMbmhrkloipQ">we will see</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Soldier of Fortune</span> next year, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eagle Mountain</span> still has a race or two left this season, likely in </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5i9fjZ4WrX4gqxgXWLadCFhIGckCw">Hong Kong</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Both <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span> have been </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5jSbMlJatcK4hlgGVUYNAzCcvIRbg">retired</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">; it seems particularly a shame in the case of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span>, since his second-place finish in the Classic hinted at distance abilities many (including me) had doubted he possessed. So it&#8217;s back to the usual refrain in his case &#8212; we&#8217;ll never know how good he might have been. We should see more of the rather-overlooked (at least by me) </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99505.html">Tiago</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> as well as </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99506.html">Colonel John</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> next season. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Champs Elysees</span> will also remain </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99506.html">in training</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, although I would imagine he might head back to the turf.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>As to the Filly &amp; Mare Classic starters, so far <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ginger Punch</span> has been </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.greenbutgame.org/2008/10/27/thank-you-ginger-punch/">retired</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, but there is no decision yet for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99506.html">Godolphin mares</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cocoa Beach</span> or <span style="font-weight: bold;">Music Note</span>; neither one may be able to withstand <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span>, but I would love to see more of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cocoa Beach</span> in particular.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>There&#8217;s no word &#8212; so far &#8212; on the two biggest winners; both the </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0200sport/0600racing/tm_headline=ascot-ace-yeats-is-the-hero-for-aidan&amp;method=full&amp;objectid=22126977&amp;siteid=50061-name_page.html">Raven&#8217;s Pass</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/99471.html">Zenyatta</a> <span style="font-family:verdana;">camps are quiet on what is next for their stars &#8212; and</span> <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=13287">ditto for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span></a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, who is back in Kentucky for a little time off before the next chapter (whatever that may be) begins.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">While I sincerely doubt we&#8217;d be lucky enough to get all three back next year, I&#8217;d be reasonably happy with two&#8230;</span></p>

In fact, it may be the most difficult race to handicap; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has had a long season and may bounce after his effort in the Arc, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is untested at the distance and, frankly, I have no idea what to make of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at this point. I&#8217;ll probably put a couple of dollars his way just out of respect for his family (ditto for </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Champs Elysees</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">), but it&#8217;s going to be a tough one. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>I think it will be a good day for Aidan O&#8217;Brien (and the other foreign trainers) on balance &#8212; it would be hard to make it worse than the situation with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >George Washington</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> last year &#8212; but whether that success will come in the Classic or elsewhere on the card remains to be seen.</span></p>

With eight wins from </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.racingpost.co.uk/horses/racing_horse_form.sd?horse_id=670119">eleven starts</a><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >, the son of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Galileo</span> heads off into the sunset to become a Darley stallion. So why the rush? In this case, it&#8217;s (still) all about the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4973830.ece">rivalry with Coolmore</a><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" ><span style="font-size:85%;">On past form, New Approach would surely have transferred to Godolphin for a four-year-old career. But the pendulum within Sheikh Mohammed&#8217;s global empire is swinging the other way. Godolphin retains its primacy but the sheikh&#8217;s boycott of Coolmore sires, now in its third year, makes it imperative that his own stallion tribe delivers him runners of the highest class.</p>
<p>John Ferguson, managing director of Darley, the sheikh&#8217;s global bloodstock conglomerate, is orchestrating the drive. &#8220;In the case of New Approach, &#8221; Ferguson said, &#8220;you have a champion two-year-old by one of the great sires [Galileo] who has won the Derby, the Irish Champion Stakes and now the Champion Stakes. He is an outstanding athlete.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >So, once again, rather than develop that rivalry on the track, it will take place behind closed doors (for a few years, at least) while <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span> racks up stud fees. He&#8217;s likely not the last one for the year, either &#8212; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raven&#8217;s Pass</span> is also </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4973830.ece">rumored</a><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" > to be next to the shed after the Breeders&#8217; Cup (which makes the event rather too well named).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >And as for the only horse to beat <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span> (three times) &#8212; well, there&#8217;s no word yet on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator&#8217;s</span> plans for next year. Next weekend may provide some direction, but one hopes at least one of this year&#8217;s stars bucks this ugly trend.</span></p>

<p>With the uproar over </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Brown&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> retirement, the confirmation that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Curlin</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will be defending his title and the news that both </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will be contesting the Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic, one strong contender has been overlooked: </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Raven&#8217;s Pass</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">. Indeed, given his finishes behind </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the mile distance throughout the season, the Classic once seemed a </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/racing/pass-ready-for-race-of-century-945305.html">far-fetched idea</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Few would have countenanced the Classic for Raven&#8217;s Pass earlier in the season, when he was ridden as a doubtful stayer even over a mile. Certainly his pedigree offers no guarantees for the extra two furlongs, but his sire, Elusive Quality, does offer one for the surface. His progeny seem to handle anything from ricefields to broken glass.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">But given his win in the QEII stakes in which he </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4838143.ece">finally</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> got the jump on arch-rival </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, trainer </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gosden">John Gosden</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> felt that things were finally falling into place for </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Raven&#8217;s Pass</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</p>
<p>In any event, it will be something of a homecoming for the KY-bred colt, who is out of </span><a style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.stonerside.com/mares/default.asp?i=27">Ascutney</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, winner of the Miesque Stakes. It would seem the breeding to </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Elusive Quality</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has been considered a success; she is in foal to the stallion again. Trainer Gosden also has an American connection; he conditioned </span><a style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Heroine">Royal Heroine</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> during her American campaign in which she won the Hollywood Derby and the first Breeders&#8217; Cup Mile.</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ></p>
<p>Raven&#8217;s Pass</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has something else going for him come Classic day: he&#8217;ll be ridden </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/08/10/16/manual_080145.html">by Frankie Dettori</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, who knows how to win a Breeders&#8217; Cup race (or </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankie_Dettori">seven</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">). While the distance will be a question and the surface will be new, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Raven&#8217;s Pass</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> should not be discounted. In his eleven lifetime starts, he&#8217;s been out of the money </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Horse_Profile/0,12491,319741_dte,00.html">only once</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; it&#8217;s a record well worth considering.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>

I&#8217;m interested to see </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >King of Rome</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> down for the Dirt Marathon (along with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, although the Classic is still his first choice) rather than the Turf; given what looks like a talent shortage in the Marathon, it may be an easy spot for him. What is actually quite intriguing is that none of the Ballydoyle stars are cross-entered &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> are both entered in the Classic and only the Classic, and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Soldier of Fortune</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is set for the Turf. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Plenty of American horses are taking advantage of cross-entries, however (until they are forced to choose next Tuesday). </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Awesome Gem</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> seems overmatched in either the Classic or the Mile, but at least there&#8217;s an option; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has the Filly &amp; Mare Sprint as her first choice, with the Sprint as a backup plan. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Lewis Michael</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will choose between the Dirt Mile and the Sprint, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Precious Kitten</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> between the Filly &amp; Mare Turf and the Mile and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Pyro</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> could contest the Classic or the Dirt Mile (which seems a better spot for him at this point). The connections of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Slew&#8217;s Tizzy</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ventura</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Well Armed</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> all have decisions to make as well.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Among other slightly surprising entries are </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Champs Elysees</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Classic (while Bobby Frankel had suggested he might enter him, I imagined he would be cross-entered in something else too), which seems to be coming up tougher than the Turf and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >US Ranger</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Mile. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Diabolical</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is set to resurface in the Turf Sprint; it&#8217;s been a while since we&#8217;ve seen him.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>But there is one old reliable we can look forward to &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Better Talk Now</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is back for his </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2008/October/13/Better-Talk-Now-on-target-for-fifth-BC-Turf-start.aspx">fifth shot</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the Turf. Given that everyone seems to be gravitating toward the Classic this year, why not give it another go?</span></p>

It&#8217;s entirely possible he may skip the race for the Japan Dirt Cup, or he could even take on both.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">In the event we do see him on October 25th, who might his competitors be? <span style="font-weight: bold;">Go Between</span>, winner of the Pacific Classic, has </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3641972">been mentioned</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> as a possible starter, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> seems to be flying under the radar despite being proven in California (although, granted, not against the likes of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span>). Many media eyes have shifted to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Casino Drive</span>; Steve Haskin notes that he is &#8216;</span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/47533.htm?id=47533">no ordinary horse</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.&#8217; His allowance win over the weekend allowed him to easily dominate a less-than-imposing field and he obviously has plenty of talent &#8212; but winning the Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic with so little experience would be quite a feat.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">The pre-entries this week will likely show a number of the top European competitors entered in both the Mile and the Classic; Aidan O&#8217;Brien seems as though he does not want to tip his hand just yet with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span>. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova&#8217;s</span> connections have chosen </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3641971">the Mile</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> over the Filly &amp; Mare Turf, but whether we see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span> take her on or pass up the race for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12426_4261146,00.html">the Classic</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> remains to be seen. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raven&#8217;s Pass</span> may also be pre-entered in both races, but it&#8217;s possible the picture will become slightly clearer </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/47500/bc-pre-entries-to-be-announced-oct-16">on Thursday</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">While I don&#8217;t entirely agree with </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.horseraceinsider.com/blog.php/west-coast-wash/10142008-a-classic-in-a-minor-key/">Bill Christine that</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8216;<span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> vs. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span> in the Classic is the only matchup that can save this Breeders&#8217; Cup now&#8217; I admit I&#8217;d very much like to see that&#8230;</span></p>
