After that, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >The Diva</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will head back to the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://makybe.com.au/">property</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> named in her hono(u)r outside Melbourne to kick back with her current foal and await the arrival of number three.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Closer to home, it seems that the </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Brown</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">/Philly Park &#8216;thing&#8217; is back on the table &#8212; for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.nypost.com/seven/08202008/sports/horseracing/big_brown_eyes_turf_at_philly_park_125191.htm">the right price</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, that is. It seems odd that the course was previously &#8216;</span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://racing.bloodhorse.com/article/46646.htm">not to their liking</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">&#8216; &#8212; one can only assume that the turf fairies visited overnight and fixed whatever problem might have been a concern. My fantasy version of that event would see </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Hard Spun</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> pulled out of retirement, but I suspect the lineup will be more along the lines of PA-bred non-winners of two and the big horse.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>That counts, right?</span></p>

<p>At this point, there seem to be few challengers to </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> dominance at the mile; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >New Approach</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has beaten him once, but then suffered two subsequent defeats when re-matched. The only other horse to finish in front of him is filly </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Saoirse Abu</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> (another American-bred, this one by </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Mr. Greeley</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">) who beat him at 2, but she has remained in filly races since that time &#8211; albeit in top company, taking on </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Natagora</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Lush Lashes</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> with respectable results.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>With the number of top-class American-bred turf milers in this crop (including </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, who is by </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Kingmambo</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">) it seems a shame no one seems to care much about this division Stateside &#8211; I still maintain that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Hard Spun</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> could have really excelled as a turf miler &#8211; but I digress.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Tomorrow&#8217;s feature is the two-mile Goodwood Cup; things look a bit easier for </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Yeats</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> with last year&#8217;s winner, 5-year-old mare </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Allegretto</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12426_3886452,00.html">declared out</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> with a minor foot injury.  </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Yeats</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is by no means the only elder statesman in the race; the connections of nine-year-old </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Distinction</span> are <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.setantasports.com/en/Sport/News/Other-sports/2008/07/30/Racing-Distinction-camp-confident-of-shock/?facets/sport-space/great-britain-locale/horse-racing/">hoping for an upset</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span>  <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Yeats</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> won this race in 2006 and will be carrying quite a bit of weight (something in the neighborhood of 138 pounds, if my math is not off, although that&#8217;s entirely possible &#8212; he enjoys a </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/96826.html">five pound penalty</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for his recent Gold Cup win) and his main rival may turn out to be stablemate </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Honolulu</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> who seems to be </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/08/07/30/manual_115826.html">improving</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the right time (and who beat </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Distinction</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> last time out). </span>  <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>But let&#8217;s return to </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for a moment; Aidan O&#8217;Brien is apparently considering pointing him for the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=racing/08/07/30/manual_161434.html">Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, given the synthetic surface at Santa Anita. Obviously things </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_%28horse%29">did not</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> turn out so well last time Ballydoyle brought a turf miler to the Classic, but the surface may make a difference and there are some distance genes in there that suggest the mile and a quarter might suit him just as well as the mile &#8212; but he has yet to attempt either &#8216;new&#8217; factor so far. It&#8217;s an intriguing possibility&#8230;</span></p>

The next horse I recall backing was <span style="font-weight: bold;">Slew O&#8217;Gold</span>, who finished 4th in 1983.  I was back in form with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Swale</span> in 1984 (and was devastated when he died after the Belmont; many hours were spent discussing conspiracy theories on midwestern playgrounds).  I had <span style="font-weight: bold;">Skywalker</span> in 1985 (6th place) and was torn between <span style="font-weight: bold;">Broad Brush</span> (3rd) and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Snow Chief</span> (11th) in 1986.  I liked <span style="font-weight: bold;">Alysheba</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cryptoclearance</span> (4th) in 1987, so that was another good result, and was on fire with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Winning Colors</span> in 1988.</p>
<p>1989, the first year I attended the Derby in person, is where it all went wrong for me &#8212; as a rather overenthusiastic consumer of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Easy Goer</span> Kool-Aid, I was rather miffed when he finshed behind <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sunday Silence</span>; I didn&#8217;t really appreciate the history-making rivalry I&#8217;d been lucky enough to witness until some years later (the appalling weather on the day didn&#8217;t help either).</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">I was still close in 1990, backing <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Squall</span> to a 2nd-place finish, but clearly my magic touch was wearing off &#8211; my 1991 pick, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hansel</span>, was 10th. In 1992, I actively disliked <span style="font-weight: bold;">Arazi</span> and was not at all surprised to see him finish up the track, but I certainly didn&#8217;t pick <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lil E. Tee</span> either. I had no favorite in 1993 &#8212; a poor showing.</p>
<p>In 1994 I was back in &#8216;favorite&#8217; mode, only to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Holy Bull</span> throw in one of his few poor performances. My &#8216;back-the-filly&#8217; fallback didn&#8217;t help much with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Serena&#8217;s Song</span> (16th) in 1995, and even the return of my one-time crush, Chris Antley, didn&#8217;t help <span style="font-weight: bold;">Louis Quatorze</span> (26th) in 1996. I had nothing for 1997, liked <span style="font-weight: bold;">Artax</span> (13th) the following year, but was pretty fairly about <span style="font-weight: bold;">Charismatic</span> going into the 1999 Derby. I was happy to see Chris Antley back again, finally with a win on a horse I&#8217;ve always felt was underrated (especially since he was by my 1990 pick, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Squall</span>), but he wasn&#8217;t my firm favorite at post time as I was having an indecisive year.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>2000 was the year of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fu Peg</span> hype and I wanted no part of him. My pick, <span style="font-weight: bold;">The Deputy</span>, finished well up the track in 14th. I recall being wary of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Point Given</span> due to the excessive puffery surrounding him, but I can&#8217;t claim to have had the foresight to have picked <span style="font-weight: bold;">Monarchos</span> (although I very much enjoyed <a href="http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/08/theyve-got-the-horse-right-here/#squires">Jim Squires</a>&#8216; <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Horse-Different-Color-Breeding-Secretariat/dp/1586481177/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1209571278&amp;sr=8-2?tag=bettsmittreea-20">book</a> about him). <span style="font-weight: bold;">Perfect Drift</span> rewarded my belief in him by finishing 3rd behind <span style="font-weight: bold;">War Emblem</span> (although I clearly picked the horse with more long-term racing value). I was swept up in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Empire Maker</span> tumult in 2003, but I also chose <span style="font-weight: bold;">Peace Rules</span> &#8211; at least I was in the money with both. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>I finally hit my stride again with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Smarty Jones</span> in 2004 &#8211; I picked him in January that year and never wavered. I&#8217;m still not entirely convinced that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Giacomo</span> won the 2005 Derby (I much prefer his brother, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiago</span>) since clearly <span style="font-weight: bold;">Afleet Alex</span> (3rd) should have, and of course I picked <span style="font-weight: bold;">Barbaro</span>. I had nothing much last year since the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span> build-up put me off &#8211; I backed <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Nobiz Like Shobiz</span>, but did have a few bets that featured the eventual Derby victor (as well as <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span>).</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">Clearly, I&#8217;ve neither gained nor lost much by either jumping on or avoiding prohibitive-favorite bandwagons, which suggests that I have no need to do it this time around either. Given this year&#8217;s field (and my difficulties in cheering for Rick Dutrow &#8212; I&#8217;d love <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> if he were trained by just about anyone else), I&#8217;ll be looking for a little value &#8211; specifics to come after the post position draw.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Beyond the Derby trail, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chelokee</span> makes a <a href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/44936.htm">welcome return</a> on Friday in the Alysheba on the Oaks undercard (and I&#8217;ll have more Oaks thoughts after the Derby draw as well) and it&#8217;s nice to see that </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/article/44929.htm">Big Truck</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/article/44924.htm">Cowboy Cal</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span>are running for charity.  Also of note is the news that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Terlingua</span>, dam of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Storm Cat</span>, was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://breeding.bloodhorse.com/article/44937.htm">put down</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> on Tuesday at the age of 32.</span>  <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Did we mention that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Proud Spell</span> have </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/article/44916.htm">a parrot</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">?</span></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">To that end, I always look forward to playing with the <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=999980222054">C-J Derby Data Track</a> (and was pleased to discover its origins in a post at <a href="http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/25/find-a-derby-winner-by-the-numbers/">TheRail</a>); one of the options might prove particularly salient when comparing this year&#8217;s hype horses to last year&#8217;s results &#8212; proven ability to handle traffic.<span style="">  </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> had a &#8216;yes&#8217; in that column; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> a no.<span style="">  </span>Beyond the overall &#8216;experience&#8217; tag, this is a factor I like paying attention to.<span style="">  </span>Horses with the dreaded &#8216;no&#8217; this year include quite a few I do like &#8211; including <span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of Cork</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Smooth Air</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gayego</span> and, of course, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>.<span style="">  </span>If I were judging by that factor alone, it would make <span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> look particularly attractive.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">But adding in another factor complicates matters; if I go by highest Beyers, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Bob Black Jack</span> heads straight for the top of the list (which, if anything, looks very &#8216;sprinty&#8217;), followed by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gayego</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Recapturetheglory</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> &#8211; no one else has cracked the 100 mark; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John&#8217;s</span> highest is a 95.<span style="">  </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" face="verdana">Two BRIS speed ratings of 100 or higher yields a more select group &#8212; only <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cool Coal </span><st1:state st="on"><st1:place st="on"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Man</span>.</st1:place></st1:state><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">Whenever I mix and match the factors I&#8217;m most interested in, three horses keep coming back to the top: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span>. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">So, with all that, who do I like (at least in the pre-post-position-draw world)?<o:p></o:p> It&#8217;s looking something like this:<o:p></o:p></p>
<ul  style="font-family:verdana;">
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> &#8211; The <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> show beings in earnest <a href="http://www.thoroughbredblog.com/2008/04/from-outside-of-big-browns-barn.html">today</a></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> &#8211; Seems to like Churchill Downs</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of </span><st1:place style="font-weight: bold;" st="on"><st1:city st="on">Cork</st1:city></st1:place> &#8211; Don&#8217;t like his prep, but it was a nice work</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> &#8211; Looked pretty good the other day &#8211; and drew an outside post for the Oaks</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Gayego</span> &#8211; Not convinced he is a 1 1/4 horse, but he&#8217;s talented</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> &#8211; I&#8217;m still not convinced, but he keeps popping up</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Smooth Air </span>- Health concerns remain?</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati </span>- If Barclay Tagg is happy, I&#8217;m happy</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span> &#8211; Worked in his usual style</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span> &#8211; Still love his sire, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Siphon</span></li>
</ul>
<p  class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p face="verdana" class="MsoPlainText">I&#8217;m still grumbling about <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito&#8217;s</span> absence (especially after a nice work yesterday &#8211; I&#8217;d happily toss <span style="font-weight: bold;">Anak Nakal</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Humor</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cowboy Cal</span> to let him run) and that of an also-eligible list, but at least I have the Belmont to look forward to.<span style="">  </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-family:verdana;">It&#8217;s worth checking out the short article on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown&#8217;s</span> former trainer, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/article/44896.htm">Pat Reynolds</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, as well &#8211; he&#8217;s another one who got <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.jessicachapel.com/railbird/archives/001650face_the_cat_sold_moved.html">Curlined</a> (and he suggests that he sold for considerably more than the reported $3 million).</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">  </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">He mentions <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown&#8217;s</span> odd patch of white on his left side (check out Barbara Livingston&#8217;s photo of it </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.barbaralivingston.com/gallery/ontrack/BigBrownA">here</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8212; and a rather dramatic shot of him </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.barbaralivingston.com/gallery/ontrack/BigBrown4BL">acting up</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the </span><st1:city style="font-family: verdana;" st="on"><st1:place st="on">Saratoga</st1:place></st1:city><span style="font-family:verdana;"> paddock before his first race); anyone who read </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.amazon.com/King-Wind-Story-Godolphin-Arabian/dp/0027436292/ref=ed_oe_htag=bettsmittreea-20"><span style="font-style: italic;">King of the Wind</span></a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> as a child can probably read far too much into the white spot.</span></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-family:verdana;">The main gossip of the week surrounds the likelihood of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Eight Belles</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> (pictured) </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=11176">going in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city></a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> rather than the Oaks (and she will probably be entered in both).</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">  </span><o:p style="font-family: verdana;"></o:p><span style="font-family:verdana;">  After coming close with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Hard Spun</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> (and getting sidetracked with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Rockport Harbor</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">), I can certainly sympathize with owner Rick Porter&#8217;s desire to take another shot this year, and based on her numbers and form, she&#8217;s a legitimate contender &#8212; indeed, she&#8217;s in my Top Ten this week.</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">  </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">What I do not want to see is for her to be scratched from the Derby after a bad post position draw, thus shutting out someone else (especially a horse like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Tomcito</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> or </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Truck</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">) who should really get a chance.</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">  </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">Of course, if I had my way, the graded earnings=</span><st1:place style="font-family: verdana;" st="on"><st1:city st="on">Derby</st1:city></st1:place><span style="font-family:verdana;"> gate equation would be shaken up considerably, but that&#8217;s </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://superfectablog.blogspot.com/2006/05/why-20-horse-field.html">another story</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">So, without further ado, the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Superfecta Derby Top Ten</span> for this week:<o:p></o:p></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> &#8211; The feet and the experience factors cannot be ignored, but neither can his potential &#8212; unless he gets caught up in a speed duel<o:p></o:p></li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> &#8211; If he were by anyone other than <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiznow</span>, I would be wary of his lack of experience on conventional dirt<o:p></o:p></li>
<li  style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span><span style="">  </span>- She&#8217;s got the distance pedigree and much better numbers than most of her potential competitors</li>
<li  style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Monba</span> &#8211; Let&#8217;s see what else he&#8217;s got</li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> &#8211; He&#8217;ll need to work between his non-effort in the Blue Grass and the <st1:place st="on"><st1:city st="on">Derby</st1:city></st1:place> to be in peak form, but he&#8217;s (otherwise) always been consistent<o:p></o:p></li>
<li  style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Recapturetheglory</span> &#8211; As a big <span style="font-weight: bold;">Risen Star</span> fan, I&#8217;d like to see his connections back, but he (like <st1:place style="font-weight: bold;" st="on"><st1:placename st="on">War</st1:placename> <st1:placetype st="on">Pass</st1:placetype></st1:place>) shares <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cherokee Run&#8217;s</span> sprinting genes<o:p></o:p></li>
<li  style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Smooth Air</span> &#8211; Has been a little overlooked since his Florida Derby effort<o:p></o:p></li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span> &#8211; He has the pedigree and running style to suit the <st1:place st="on"><st1:city st="on">Derby</st1:city></st1:place> &#8211; and seems to finally be maturing into himself<o:p></o:p></li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> &#8211; Here&#8217;s hoping he gets the cash he needs in the Coolmore Lexington -<span style=""> </span>he&#8217;s shaping up to be my favorite closer<o:p></o:p></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Visionaire</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Overcame a tough trip over the weekend &#8212; good practice for the Derby</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Update: Tomcito</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> just <a href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=44609">worked a bullet</a> at Keeneland.  I trust that bodes well&#8230;</p>

<p>Naturally, you are now wondering how the committee might have overlooked <span style="font-weight: bold;">War Pass</span> and the aforementioned <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>; well, here&#8217;s how &#8212; they didn&#8217;t win 5 G1 races over the past six months (nor do they have 8 wins out of 10 lifetime starts like the Antipodean sprinter). Indeed, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Weekend Hussler</span> is the only three-year-old who makes the list.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">All told, US-based horses have a good showing in the rankings&#8211; obviously <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> is well clear of the rest of the pack with a top rating of 130; the next installment should include Triple Crown results, so some of our local three-year-olds should make the list too. In case you were wondering, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin&#8217;s</span> 130 equals <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ghostzapper&#8217;s</span> top ranking &#8212; which suggests that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin&#8217;s</span> could be even higher by the end of the year. One wonders where <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> might have ranked had he continued racing&#8230;but I digress.</span></p>
<p>As for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Weekend Hussler</span>, he&#8217;s aiming for another G1 win by the end of his season.  Good luck to <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23489214-5006021,00.html">his connections</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">!</span></p>

Given the small amount of space they are able to devote to the issue, I strongly suggest you <a href="http://leftatthegate.blogspot.com/">stick with Alan</a> for this topic, but it was nice to see horse racing discussed somewhere in the mainstream media at this time of year (even in this context).</p>
<p>But the photo led me to the real question &#8212; what race is this? It&#8217;s obviously not the Belmont (which was the only New York race I could think of that featured both <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiago</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span>), and the mob of horses in the photo suggests to me that it&#8217;s the Derby (and so not terribly relevant to an article on New York racing, but I&#8217;m obviously the only person who cares). Any other guesses?</p>
<p>In other (Kentucky-related) news, Churchill Downs is hosting a news conference tomorrow with Roy and Gretchen Jackson for a &#8216;special announcement.&#8217; One can only assume that as it will be the one-year anniversary of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Barbaro&#8217;s</span> death, that said announcement will be that his ashes are to be interred at the track or museum. While reflection is all very well and good, I prefer to look to the future at this point &#8212; I have it from the horse&#8217;s mouth (as it were) that their filly <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sweetest Kiss</span> is one to watch&#8230;<br /></span></p>

First, we&#8217;ll revisit the biggest news stories in racing in something approaching chronological order:</p>
<p></span>
<ol  style="font-family:verdana;">
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Barbaro&#8217;s</span> death: for those of us working at Penn Vet at the time, it was probably less of a shock than it was to the general population, but it certainly got racing back in the mainstream media.</li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Invasor</span> wins the Dubai World Cup. He is the best.</li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Lava Man</span> may not be at his best these days, but he can still win the Big Cap if required.</li>
<li style="font-family:verdana;">The 2007 Triple Crown series: each race was superb for different reasons. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span> gave us a nice Derby, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> did a fine job in the Preakness and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rags to Riches</span> supplied what was probably the most exciting Belmont finish in a very long while. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> hung in for everything and in retrospect was rather impressive.</li>
<li  style="font-family:verdana;">Royal Ascot: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Miss Andretti</span> steps up in style.</li>
<li>Equine influenza hits Australia, causing racing and breeding chaos.</li>
<li>Synthetic surfaces are all the rage, although hard data about them is mysteriously absent.</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">John Henry&#8217;s</span> death: the old guy is still remembered for his temper as much as his success on the track</li>
<li>The Breeders&#8217; Cup: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> looks the part, but the big day is marred by the death of <span style="font-weight: bold;">George Washington.</span></li>
<li> Every horse in training retires (well, perhaps it just seems like it).</li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">We should have plenty to look forward to this year; the returns I am most anticipating are (fingers crossed) those of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rags to Riches</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span>. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Showing Up</span> has been turning in great works and that suggests a fun year in American turf is in store. Let&#8217;s not forget <span style="font-weight: bold;">Magnificience</span> [sic] either&#8230;</p>
<p></span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">Finally, just because I like you, lucky reader, you get my top 10 beers of 2007 &#8212; if you see them, give them a try:<br /></span>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Perhaps the best hope is that he just comes out for a series of walkovers early in the year while he waits for <st1:place st="on"><st1:placename st="on">War</st1:placename> <st1:placetype st="on">Pass</st1:placetype></st1:place> and his agemates to grow up; things could really kick off come August 2008.<span style=""> </span>The Dubai World Cup doesn’t seem to have any real contenders at this point either; it seems that he may as well add that feather to his cap too.<span style=""> </span>Of course, some Smart Strike offspring (notably <st1:place st="on">English Channel</st1:place>) like the turf – can anyone imagine Curlin facing off against Better Talk Now? If it did indeed turn out that Curlin likes both surfaces, that would open up a new realm of possibilities.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

First, the West Coast:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/September/29/Tiago-stamps-ticket-to-Classic-with-Goodwood-win.aspx"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiago</span> performed well</a> in his first outing against older horses in the Goodwood Handicap (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Lava Man</span> was scratched in favor of a race next weekend), although he was certainly tested by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Awesome Gem</span> &#8212; nevertheless, his victory was very professional. I would also like to see more of third-place finisher <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lewis Michael</span>, perhaps in a slightly shorter race; I believe he has a lot of potential but has never quite found his rhythm although he seems comfortable on both dirt and grass. Some may recall he finished third to a horse named <span style="font-weight: bold;">Barbaro</span> in the Florida Derby and did not look bad in that defeat; I&#8217;d like to see him in the Dirt Mile.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Nashoba&#8217;s Key</span> switched back to grass for the Yellow Ribbon and <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/September/29/Nashobas-Key-remains-perfect-with-Yellow-Ribbon-win.aspx">still remains unbeaten</a>, holding off a strong challenge from <span style="font-weight: bold;">Citronnade</span>. As I&#8217;ve mentioned before, the Filly &amp; Mare Turf division is going to be the hardest one to handicap &#8212; but more on that later. It is perhaps more impressive to consider that Nashoba&#8217;s Key began this winning streak when she began her racing career earlier this year as a four-year-old and she seems to improve with each race.</p>
<p>Switching to the East Coast, but staying with the girls on grass, <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/September/29/Lahudood-sets-stakes-record-in-Flower-Bowl-victory.aspx">the Flower Bowl</a> was certainly an interesting race. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lahudood</span> set a stakes record in her win (her first graded win<span></span> in America, as a helpful reader has pointed out), but <span style="font-weight: bold;">Roskina</span> (one of my picks) was a fine second ahead of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Wait a While</span>. It seems that the talented <span style="font-weight: bold;">My Typhoon</span> was not a huge fan of the very firm going, as she was never a factor (but she should not be discounted come Breeders&#8217; Cup day). As mentioned above, the Filly &amp; Mare Turf division is full of talent already &#8212; once everyone else ships in from Europe, it&#8217;s practically a toss-up since a good argument can be made for any number of top horses. It&#8217;s going to be a highlight of Breeders&#8217; Cup day.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Discreet Cat&#8217;s</span> <a href="http://www.rte.ie/sport/racing/2007/1001/discreetcat.html">return to the races</a> in the Vosburgh did not play out as planned; his dull third was not a particularly confidence-inspiring performance, but the excuses are built-in &#8212; the long layoff, he needed the race, he needed more distance (although he certainly did not seem to need it at that particular point in time), etc. But the good news is that it means the new Dirt Mile will have a marquee contender, which is something it probably needed &#8212; and it should also mean that he needs to stay in training next year to really prove himself. If anything, the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup07/news/story?id=3043993">victory by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fabulous Strike</span></a> should continue to raise his sire <a href="http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/farm_access.cfm?auth_code=7300&amp;sire_name=Smart%20Strike"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Smart Strike&#8217;s</span> stud fee</a> &#8212; three grade I wins for his offspring in one weekend (see <span style="font-weight: bold;">English Channel</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> below) cannot hurt.</p>
<p>Back on the turf, <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/September/30/English-Channel-repeats-in-Joe-Hirsch-Turf-Classic.aspx"><span style="font-weight: bold;">English Channel</span> looked tremendous</a> in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (his second victory in the race, which is a remarkable statistic these days for a stallion); I don&#8217;t know whether that means he&#8217;s quite in the same league as some of the expected European heavy-hitters, but it was a gutsy run and a very encouraging sign. It would be nice to see more horses with a career of consistent top-level performances. Given that he was fifth in the Breeders&#8217; Cup Turf as a 3-year old and third last year, he does have a good shot, but it&#8217;s going to be a tough race.</p>
<p>The Distaff division is clearly missing <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rags to Riches</span>; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Unbridled Belle</span> looked good <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup07/news/story?id=3044030">beating stablemate <span style="font-weight: bold;">Indian Vale</span></a> in the Beldame although <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ginger Punch</span> did not seem quite her usual self. While <span style="font-weight: bold;">Unbridled Belle</span> seems to be coming into her own, she&#8217;s not really in the same class as Rags to Riches and the division is poorer for her absence. Without her, it&#8217;s a reasonably solid, but somewhat uninspiring group. However, I&#8217;ve always maintained that winning the Del Cap can propel a mare on to bigger and better things, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Unbridled Belle</span> clearly took that to heart &#8212; not bad for <a href="http://www.pedigreequery.com/unbridled+belle">a $4,000 purchase</a>.</p>
<p>Finally, of course, the Classic division. As predicted, <a href="http://horseracing.sportsline.com/cbs/headlines/showarticle.aspx?articleId=22329"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> bested <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span></a>, but he had everything his own way in a tiny field and on a surface he loves. He&#8217;s unlikely to get to set the pace and lead wire to wire in the Classic, which seems to be his preferred running style; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span> didn&#8217;t look tired to me as much as not necessarily pushed to his full potential &#8212; the race seemed more of a rehearsal for him. As I&#8217;ve said before, I like <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> a lot and would love him at a mile (and he looked fine at the 1 1/8 as well), but I&#8217;m not sure he loves the 1 1/4 distance, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span> does. As ever, trainer Carl Nafzger made no excuses and <a href="http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/racing/article3018706.ece">looks forward to the next dance:</a><br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">Carl Nafzger, handler of Street Sense, was gracious in defeat. &#8220;It was up to him at the head of the lane to get by Hard Spun,&#8221; he said, &#8220;but he just outran us. We were right there and we got beat; that&#8217;s horseracing, no excuses. But we&#8217;re ready for next time.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> proved me wrong, gamely holding off <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lawyer Ron</span> in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, although <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lawyer Ron</span> didn&#8217;t do himself any favors &#8212; he seemed rank early on and was in the center of the track for much of the race. It could easily be argued that he just prefers Saratoga to Belmont &#8212; but even if that is the case, it seems there was some concern from trainer Steve Asmussen that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lawyer Ron&#8217;s</span> pressure was a tough challenge for <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071001/SPORTS08/710010535/1002/SPORTS"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span></a>:<br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">Asmussen called the Gold Cup &#8220;trophies in their own right&#8221; but acknowledged it was not his ultimate goal. That comes in the $5 million Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic on Oct. 27 at Monmouth Park.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone knows the Classic is the pinnacle,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And I&#8217;m extremely concerned that he left too much out there today.&#8221;<br /></span></p></blockquote>
<p>The bottom line is that all the Classic contenders who raced this past weekend looked good and will likely go off at relatively short odds on come the evening of Breeders&#8217; Cup Saturday, but I can imagine quite a few scenarios in which a European horse runs off with the prize. We&#8217;ll have to wait and see who ships in&#8230;</span></p>
