Anything could happen in the Marathon, the two-year-old races might produce any number of unusual results and the surface will be new to defending champion Curlin and foreign entrants alike, so the Classic is no foregone conclusion. In fact, it may be the most difficult race to handicap; Duke of Marmalade has had a long season and may bounce after his effort in the Arc, Henrythenavigator is untested at the distance and, frankly, I have no idea what to make of Casino Drive at this point. I’ll probably put a couple of dollars his way just out of respect for his family (ditto for Champs Elysees), but it’s going to be a tough one.

I think it will be a good day for Aidan O’Brien (and the other foreign trainers) on balance — it would be hard to make it worse than the situation with George Washington last year — but whether that success will come in the Classic or elsewhere on the card remains to be seen.

Of course, I’m happy to offer my opinions in advance:

Before the star performances, however, there were a few upsets along the way.

First, Henrythenavigator finally saw the back of Raven’s Pass — a horse he has beaten three times. They may face each other once more this season in California; one imagines that the weather and firmer ground would favor Henrythenavigator — after last year’s nightmare with George Washington, I wonder if they would be so keen on trying the Breeders’ Cup if this year’s installment were at a muddy Belmont. Ginger Punch was not so lucky against Cocoa Beach in the Beldame and Street Boss was also outfinished in the Ancient Title, but neither could really be said to have run a terrible race — they both just seemed a bit tired.

The new surface at Santa Anita proved no impediment to superstar Zenyatta (pictured); she’s (almost always easily) beaten the best fillies of her generation, and Saturday’s Lady’s Secret was no different. Hystericalady gave it all she had, but when jockey Mike Smith asked Zenyatta to go, she loped off, leaving the few who dared to face her in the dust. Her consummate ease in the Distaff division suggests that she might take a crack at the Classic – but perhaps next year. Let her win the Filly & Mare Classic this go-round, let the dust settle and swoop in for next year’s Classic Classic. If she’s this good at 4, she could be even more of a monster at 5 — and I would not be surprised if retirement was an easy excuse for some top colts to duck her.

Curlin’s record-breaking Jockey Club Gold Cup repeat was almost coolly professional; he clearly knew just what he had to do and dispatched his rivals with no trouble once called upon. He’s earned his place in history while the rest of his agemates sat on the sidelines watching — and I doubt they would have matched his success. I was not a Curlin fan during last year’s Triple Crown series; I didn’t like the path he took to the Derby, I didn’t like his jailbird owners and I especially did not like that he was switched from Helen Pitts to Steve Asmussen. I give a lot of credit to Jess Jackson for trying to iron out the ownership situation and even more to the horse himself for proving what he was capable of — count me on the bandwagon. Here’s hoping we see him in the Classic – and, if we are lucky, next year. We’ll see how he settles in at Santa Anita.

Of course, there were many other fine performances — Wait a While’s Yellow Ribbon was another confident victory by a star, although her effort is being somewhat eclipsed by Curlin and Zenyatta’s stories — but having watched Zenyatta win, it’s easy to see why others seem to pale in comparison.

Check back later this week for more on last weekend’s races (which will likely involve a discursion into folklore — you have been warned) and a preview of Sunday’s Arc, which should see Zarkava take on Duke of Marmalade…

At this point, there seem to be few challengers to Henrythenavigator’s dominance at the mile; New Approach has beaten him once, but then suffered two subsequent defeats when re-matched. It’s an intriguing possibility…

First, we’ll revisit the biggest news stories in racing in something approaching chronological order:

Barbaro’s death: for those of us working at Penn Vet at the time, it was probably less of a shock than it was to the general population, but it certainly got racing back in the mainstream media.

Invasor wins the Dubai World Cup. He is the best.

Lava Man may not be at his best these days, but he can still win the Big Cap if required.

The 2007 Triple Crown series: each race was superb for different reasons. Street Sense gave us a nice Derby, Curlin did a fine job in the Preakness and Rags to Riches supplied what was probably the most exciting Belmont finish in a very long while. Hard Spun hung in for everything and in retrospect was rather impressive.

Royal Ascot: Miss Andretti steps up in style.

Equine influenza hits Australia, causing racing and breeding chaos.

Synthetic surfaces are all the rage, although hard data about them is mysteriously absent.

John Henry’s death: the old guy is still remembered for his temper as much as his success on the track

The Breeders’ Cup: Curlin looks the part, but the big day is marred by the death of George Washington.

Every horse in training retires (well, perhaps it just seems like it).

We should have plenty to look forward to this year; the returns I am most anticipating are (fingers crossed) those of Rags to Riches and Curlin. Showing Up has been turning in great works and that suggests a fun year in American turf is in store. Let’s not forget Magnificience [sic] either…

Finally, just because I like you, lucky reader, you get my top 10 beers of 2007 — if you see them, give them a try:

After yesterday’s musical interlude, you’re no doubt waiting expectantly for a full race-by-race analysis. Well, with today being my last day at Penn Vet, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. But don’t despair, today brings you some of my (hopefully) live longshots for each race.

Filly & Mare Sprint
With La Traviata in this race, it makes it a very interesting betting race since she’s such a prohibitive favorite. It means that Wild Gams (who we already know loves Monmouth) and Baroness Thatcher could both go off at long odds — at least considerably longer odds than they might otherwise.

Juvenile Turf
Old Man Buck is now pointed to the Juvenile rather than the Juvenile Turf, otherwise I would happily pick him in this category. I generally avoid Todd Pletcher’s horses in the Breeders’ Cup, but I’ll pick The Leopard as my longshot (and no, not just because Leopard comes out the same day).

Dirt Mile
Lewis Michael is my official longshot for this race; Corinthian could be back in form as well, but he won’t be at nearly as long a price. If the bettors all go off Discreet Cat, it’s entirely possible he’d be worth some investm ent as well.

Juvenile Fillies
A to the Croft will have blinkers for the first time and I like her a lot; I think there’s been so much buzz about Smarty Deb and her feel-good story that she won’t be quite the same value (but should not be overlooked).

Juvenile
Old Man Buck should be in here at a good price; he may not win, but I can easily see him hitting the board behind Tale of Ekati. Salute the Sarge (a half-brother to Chelokee) could offer some value as well. And if you want to know how Tale of Ekati got his name, check out Diamond: The History of a Cold-Blooded Love Affair. It gets complicated!

Filly & Mare Turf
This should be a great race with some solid favorites in Nashoba’s Key and Precious Kitten; given her inconsistency of late, Honey Ryder could have long odds. If it does indeed rain Saturday, I may give an edge to the Europeans — I might consider Timarwa if it comes up soft.

Sprint
Idiot Proof has set a record at Monmouth already; Kelly’s Landing won the Dubai Golden Shaheen and has been quiet since, but he clearly loves this distance. The long layoff should translate to longer odds.

Mile
Purim is my longshot, but this is a great field; if Silent Name and/or Remarkable News come up with silly odds too, I’ll be putting a bit in those buckets as well.

Distaff
I think Unbridled Belle is going to be overlooked and a good value (despite her good record of late); Teammate still needs a G1 win and could get it here.

Turf
I have just one sentimental longshot on the day — Better Talk Now. He’s updated his MySpace page to let us know he’s rested and ready.

Classic
Tiago is flying completely under the radar and seems to be improving. Don’t count him out. Of course, if you want to put money on George Washington in this race, be my guest!

Check back starting tomorrow for a full analysis of each race now that the post positions are set…

Nicely played.

The real news this week is across the pond; Royal Ascot begins today. This year’s installment features the 200th running of the 2 1/2 mile Gold Cup — wouldn’t it be nice if we had such a fixture? While there is always a major European element, there promises to be a strong contingent from Australia shipping in for the King’s Stand Stakes (a G2 sprint) — Miss Andretti is favored (obviously there are no qualms about girls-against-boys here) but will have a tough race against fellow Antipodean (and last year’s winner) Takeover Target.

The St James’s Palace Stakes features Cockney Rebel and the Queen Anne Stakes heralds the return of George Washington. Of Gorgeous George, the BBC remarks:

His ability cannot be questioned but his quirky behaviour can cause some moments of concern which trainer Aidan O’Brien hopes will not be the case here, especially with filly Red Evie among his rivals.

If you are lucky enough to get some TV coverage for it, enjoy – the closest I’ll get is having a Pimm’s in hono(u)r of the occasion.

Trainer Larry Jones put the win in perspective:

I’m not looking forward to taking on any of them, with Great Hunter, Street Sense and Any Given Saturday all sitting there, and now maybe this horse, who doesn’t really have a weak link in him. He may not be a superhorse, but he has every link in that chain strong.” Jones said. “This could be a suicide for anybody going into the Derby. They may have to run so good to win this coming race that it could take the Derby out of them. That’s my next concern. But just to be thinking we can compete with them is a good feeling.”

It sounds like the Blue Grass is shaping up to be a fantastic race. For another interesting point about Hard Spun’s victory in the Lane’s End, check out the Courier-Journal:

The time for 11/8 miles over Polytrack was a solid 1:49.41. More important, Hard Spun covered the last eighth-mile in 12.68 seconds and the final three-eighths in 37.74. Finishing the final eighth under 13 seconds and the final three-eighths under 38 in a 11/8-mile prep has been one of the most reliable indicators of whether a horse can win the Derby.

It’s certainly worth considering, but I still think it would be a lot of fun to see Hard Spun on the grass. Maybe later in the year…

There’s also a nice feature article on jockey Mario Pino in the Baltimore Sun; it’s great to see a locally-known rider get a shot at the big dance.

In Coolmore news, it looks as though George Washington is back in training and could potentially re-appear in time for a race at Royal Ascot. It also seems he did manage to get a few mares in foal (which, let’s be honest, is generally more than you can say for War Emblem), so perhaps it’s more of an immaturity issue than anything else.

But given the choice, would you rather breed to a Danehill with a reputation for odd behavior and a sketchy record at stud, or a Danehill who has been able to continue his racing and stud careers concurrently, like Gentleman’s Deal? Now that’s old school.

Greg Wood’s article in The Guardian (or The Grauniad, if you prefer) sums up the whole George Washington/Holy Roman Emperor affair very well indeed:

Whatever gloss they try to put on it – and Coolmore does gloss like no one else – this can be no more than a damage-limitation exercise. And if it makes business sense to retire a fit three-year-old with a good chance in the Guineas on last year’s form, then there must also be a strong suspicion that Magnier and his associates felt that Holy Roman Emperor’s best days might already be behind him.

After all, why race at three? By that logic, Halfbridled is the best filly ever to set foot on a track. Here is another well-considered excerpt:

In the 1980s, the Coolmore mafia was often criticised for retiring a horse as soon as it had won a Classic. Now, it seems even that is an optional extra, and it is not just Holy Roman Emperor’s ante-post backers who are – quite rightly – angry and baffled at the sudden exit of a sound, talented and Classically bred colt just weeks before the Guineas meeting.

Very good points indeed…but I am still left wondering why George Washington’s issues were not discovered before the breeding season got underway.

Tags:
Horse Racing, George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor

It seems there was more than a little dismay from trainer Aidan OBrien:

Holy Roman Emperor was our best horse,” O’Brien said yesterday evening. “He was the horse we were looking forward to for the Guineas and the St James’s Palace. Paul Shanahan [a Coolmore manager] was here at 11.30am to tell me and the box came and picked him up at 11.50am. I spoke to the boss in between and the more I tried to persuade him not to retire him, the more he was convinced he had to retire him.”

While the entire episode is bizarre, some reports seem even more peculiar than others — Sporting Life indicates that fertility specialists from the US have flown in to consult and that George Washington’s status is still uncertain (insofar is it’s theoretically possible he could return to stud duties), while other reports more or less suggest that the further testing is essentially academic at this point — indeed, the BBC suggests that he could return to the track.

Pulling Holy Roman Emperor from training was apparently explained thusly to Aidan O’Brien:

The boss has his clients there and has to take care of them and obviously they are trying to replace like with like. It’s a big shock to everyone here. We are a racing stable and everyone here does their best every day to make it happen.

As far as the ‘like with like’ argument goes, it seems particularly strange since Coolmore has other sons of Danehill in their roster already — Danehill Dancer, Oratorio and Aussie Rules to name just a few (all at different price points) — surely some sort of arrangement could have been worked out to cover the mares already booked to George Washington with one of the other (mostly proven) studs. As an owner, I would have preferred a choice of one of the other stallions over an untried three-year-old straight from the track.

One wonders why George Washington’s fertility issues were not uncovered earlier — it seems unbelievable that his fee would have been set without running a battery of tests first. Granted, we’re talking about a famously highly-strung young horse and it’s possible there’s an injury or related situation we have not heard about, but to the outside observer, it certainly reads as a very murky situation.

I’m sure the next Coolmore staff meeting attended by both John Magnier and Aidan O’Brien will be an interesting affair.

Tags:
Horse Racing, George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor
