But Dalvina should not be ruled out despite the high weight and potential competition; she was a leading contender for the Cartier award for 3-year-old filly that went to the outstanding Peeping Fawn. The French-bred Green Girl is also one to watch if it’s wet; she’s a fan of soft turf.

If the going stays firm, we should see Revved Up in his final performance of the season in the McKnight and it seems there is every chance he’ll return to race again next year as a 10-year-old — although he’s often overlooked, Revved Up has won 13 stakes races over the past 7 years, on dirt and turf. Soldier’s Dancer is back for another crack at Revved Up as well — but again, any rain suggests that Revved Up will sit this one out.

In a rather complicated turn of events, Darley Japan has lost their license from the Japan Racing Association for the time being, although apparently this will not affect their breeding operations in that country where they stand such stallions as Admire Moon. The trouble is over the number of foreign owners allowed; Darley’s Japanese point person retired and that seems to have thrown things into confusion.

Finally, Toussaud has been pensioned due to laminitis; while I think some of her offspring were wildly over-rated (and were rumored to have inherited her peculiar brand of crazy), she’s definitely been a top producer; here’s hoping she is able to have a comfortable retirement.

Thanks to La Ville Rouge for having the great timing to deliver before I start my guest-blogging gig!

NBC has an article with a few updates on his yearling full brother, Nicanor:

Born March 15, 2006, Nicanor has quickly grown into his long legs and broadening chest. “His head is quite a bit bigger and there’s a larger amount of white in the face (than Barbaro) and he doesn’t have the two white socks in front. This colt is leggy, more so,” adds Gretchen. “A shade lighter bay than Barbaro, who was a true, dark bay. He doesn’t resemble him so much now, but we hope he stays healthy and can run close to what his brother did.”

The New York Times has an article today detailing the planning that is going into this year’s Derby television coverage and how a very great deal of that coverage will revolve around Barbaro. It seems to have been sensitively thought through, and I’m sure they’ve built in plenty of time to let this year’s crop of three-year-olds shine as well. Two weeks to go…in the meantime, good luck to the Jackson-owned, Matz-trained filly Eres Magica this Sunday at Keeneland!

What I find particularly interesting is that in parts of her pedigree, she’s South American for many generations — all the way back to 1894. Invasor and Candy Ride have similarly deep roots in the region. Clearly, something interesting is going on down there from a breeding perspective. In any case, I always like a filly who can beat the boys (see my many and various posts on Ouija Board) — I like one who does it at 12 furlongs even more. I look forward to a great rivalry with Wait a While next spring.

While South American horses seem to have their stock on the way up, the same cannot be said for Eres Mágica’s grand-sire, Jade Hunter — he’s moving to New York, where his stud fee has been reduced to $5000. Obviously, being the sire of Azeri isn’t quite enough to keep him in the popular set. (Stuka, one of his other G1-winning offspring, is the sire of Eres Mágica). Such are the vagaries of the game.
