<p>But they all come behind the German-bred <span style="font-weight: bold;">Manduro</span> (right); he was unbeaten last year at five and is now at Kildangan Stud. As impressive as his numbers are, the <a href="http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/racing/article3342470.ece">Belfast Telegraph notes that</a>:<br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8230;although Manduro&#8217;s mark of 131 makes him an exceptional performer, and the best world champion since Hawk Wing earned 133 in 2004, it should be remembered that the very best of the bests – a Sea-Bird or Secretariat – have a four as their middle number.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>and moreover:<br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">But although the top quintet were way above average, those beneath came up short. &#8220;It&#8217;s rare to have as many as five that good,&#8221; said the senior Irish Flat handicapper, Garry O&#8217;Gorman. &#8220;but there was a bit of a soft underbelly.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<p>Aiming to make their mark on next year&#8217;s rankings are 3-year-olds <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22626347/">El Gato Malo</a> and <a href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=43124"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span></a>, who both won races this previous weekend. <span style="font-weight: bold;">El Gato Malo</span> looked good, but I sill have yet to pick a bandwagon to jump on just yet.</p>
<p>Finally, it seems that a <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2008/January/15/Santa-Anita-chooses-to-alter-Cushion-Track-with-binder.aspx">solution has possibly been found</a> for Santa Anita&#8217;s Cushion Track nightmare &#8212; we&#8217;ll see if it pans out.</p>

<p style="font-family: verdana;"></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Sunny Issues</span> – At least Snow Cone hit the board<o:p></o:p><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">LA Champions Sprint</span> – Tortuga Straits did likewise.<o:p></o:p><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Hollywood Turf Cup</span> – In real life, I may have actually played the winning trifecta of Sunriver/Champs Elysees/Spring House (and hey, I did mention <a href="http://superfectablog.blogspot.com/2007/12/brief-digressions.html">all three</a> last week); I&#8217;d have definitely made some back on betting <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/December/08/Sunriver-snags-first-Grade-1-in-Hollywood-Turf-Cup.aspx">Sunriver</a> across the board, although I still believe Champs Elysees is a better horse overall.<span style=""> </span>As I&#8217;ve noted here often, I love his dam, Hasili – as do <a href="http://handride.blogspot.com/2007/12/broodmare-of-century.html">other members of the TBA</a>.<o:p></o:p><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Native Diver</span> – I had nothing.<span style=""> </span>Zero.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">I also had nothing in the big Hong Kong races; neither Dylan Thomas nor <a href="http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22903233-5013406,00.html">Miss Andrett</a>i had their best days although local star <a href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22901800-5006021,00.html"><st1:place st="on"><st1:placename st="on">Sacred</st1:placename> <st1:placetype st="on">Kingdom</st1:placetype></st1:place></a> improved his record to 8 wins out of his last 9 starts.<span style=""> </span>Not bad.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">But on to today&#8217;s news – the addition of <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/December/10/Breeders-Cup-adds-three-more-races-to-Friday-card.aspx">three more Friday races</a> to the Breeders&#8217; Cup card. (And a small aside to the Breeders&#8217; Cup board – I&#8217;m still waiting for you to make Friday <a href="http://superfectablog.blogspot.com/2007/02/distaff-division.html">Ladies&#8217; Day</a>, ideally with decent beer offerings).<span style=""> </span>My initial thoughts on the new races are as follows:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Turf Sprint</span> – Is this purely to lure Miss Andretti here?<span style=""> </span>Because that&#8217;s just fine with me, but we now know she doesn&#8217;t like going around <a href="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/4/story.cfm?c_id=4&amp;objectid=10481372">right-hand turns</a>.<span style=""> </span>I think this could be a really fun category with a lot of top class international competition – if you can get the competition in question to show up, given the timing with regards to major Southern Hemisphere races.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p face="verdana" class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Juvenile Fillies Turf</span> – I’m not really convinced that a separate juvenile turf race is necessary; at this age, fillies and colts are usually quite competitive against one another, and if the entrants are European or Asian turf specialist stars of the future, they likely always will compete against one another.<span style=""> </span>But as I&#8217;m always an advocate of having more turf racing in the <st1:country-region st="on"><st1:place st="on">US</st1:place></st1:country-region>, I&#8217;m not entirely against the idea.<span style=""> </span>(Speaking of American turf, it was good to see Showing Up back on the worktab today, even if it was over dirt – and he had a nice workout).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Dirt </span><st1:place style="font-weight: bold;" st="on">Marathon</st1:place> – I really like this in principle, but I wonder what caliber of horse will actually turn up to compete.<span style=""> </span>The really great long distance horses from overseas are grass horses, and American long-distance dirt specialists are not usually household names (anymore).<span style=""> </span>Still, if the object is to encourage more to contest that distance throughout their careers, I&#8217;m happy to take the long view.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-family:verdana;">So, how long will it take for these races to be graded? Can I assume <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2007/December/08/Veteran-Evening-Attire-wins-second-Queens-County.aspx">Evening Attire</a> will still be running and winning like he always does?</span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">There is an interesting aside that among the many drugs not allowed in <st1:place st="on">Hong Kong</st1:place> racing is <a href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/horse-racing/miss-andretti-a-bad-loser-says-freedman/2007/12/04/1196530680002.html">Regumate</a>, a drug that&#8217;s used to control when mares come into heat.<span style=""> </span>When they say drug free in Hong Kong, they mean drug free there.<o:p> </o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">There is an equally-interesting <a href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/horse-racing/driving-miss-andretti/2007/11/30/1196394624201.html?page=3">article on her owner</a>, Sean Buckley (who co-owns her with Gabriela Guenzi). He&#8217;s turned down as much as $10 million for Miss Andretti – not bad for what was reputed to be a $450,000 investment on what looked like a good, but not great racehorse – upon switching to the barn of trainer Lee Freedman, she&#8217;s become a monster. Apparently Coolmore has suggested a freebie with Storm Cat (on southern hemisphere time, of course) and a start in the Breeders&#8217; Cup, <o:p></o:p>but if all goes to plan, the six-year-old mare will be running for <a href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22870815-5006021,00.html">at least another year</a>, making stops all over the world (and she could end up booked to Redoute&#8217;s Choice anyway, which would be my preference between the two).<o:p><br /></o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">Dylan Thomas is also prepping for a race in <st1:place st="on">Hong Kong</st1:place> on Sunday – the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2007/12/04/shnews104.xml">Hong Kong Vase</a>.<span style=""> </span>It&#8217;s something of a replacement for the Japan Cup which kept him out of the field due to some borderline blood test results (health-related, not drug-related). <o:p></o:p>Also on the card is the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile, which features Breeders&#8217; Cup second-place finisher Excellent Art and <a href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hm9dn90xSRbisEXwH4038I33dD8A">three-year-old filly Darjina</a>, who is the likely favorite.<o:p></o:p></p>

It sounds as though we can be <a href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/89258.html">cautiously optimistic</a> about his prognosis at present; let&#8217;s hope the news from <a href="http://www.roodandriddle.com/index.php">Rood &amp; Riddle</a> continues to be encouraging. </span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Alan <a href="http://leftatthegate.blogspot.com/2007/10/bad-day-at-office-for-espn-keeneland.html">sums up the ESPN coverage</a> of the day well; I also think they did a great job under what might best be described as unforeseen circumstances &#8212; many kudos to Randy Moss and company for keeping the tone appropriate.</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> Back on a cheerful note, I am looking forward to <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071007/SPORTS08/710070550/1002/SPORTS">seeing Purim on Breeders&#8217; Cup day</a> if his connections do decide to go ; I&#8217;ve always had something of a soft spot for him and it will be nice to see him in person. We&#8217;ll find out <a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20071007-9999-1s7horses.html">whether or not The Tin Man will be headed to New Jersey</a> in a few day after his second-place finish in the Clement L. Hirsch.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">The weekend did not improve things for The Green Monkey&#8217;s family reputation &#8212; his 2 year old half sister Coat the Cubes finished last in her debut in a maiden special weight at Belmont on Saturday. That must not have been good news to his dam, Magical Masquerade, who <a href="http://ww2.keeneland.com/sales/lists/sale/results.aspx?SaleId=200703">failed to meet her reserve</a> at auction last November. But hey, at least she got to take a few &#8216;unraced&#8217; labels off her produce record. Oddly, Coat the Cubes no longer appears in <a href="http://www.pedigreequery.com/">PedigreeQuery</a> &#8212; but you can still find <a href="http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:xoom3YHKizQJ:www.pedigreequery.com/coat%2Bthe%2Bcubes+%22coat+the+cubes%22+vindication&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;cd=14&amp;gl=us&amp;client=firefox-a">her cached page</a>. Was it that embarrassing?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Dylan Thomas won the Arc (and the result was allowed to stand after a <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml;jsessionid=NCOJPDGZSNFQLQFIQMFCFFOAVCBQYIV0?xml=/sport/2007/10/08/shhots108.xml">long and rather controversial stewards&#8217; inquiry</a> and a fair amount of criticism for both winning-but-banned-elsewhere jockey Kieren Fallon and Frankie Detorri on the well-beaten favorite, Authorized) and in case you were wondering how he came to be named for the renowned <s>drunk</s> writer, it seems that <a href="http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0200wales/tm_headline=how-dylan-won-the-prix-de-l-8217-arc-de-triomphe&amp;method=full&amp;objectid=19917386&amp;siteid=50082-name_page.html">Susan Magnier does most of the naming</a> and shares my predilection for naming animals after historical figures (hence my cat named after <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snorri_Sturluson">Snorri Sturluson</a> &#8212; speaking of the cat in question, he&#8217;s <a href="http://snorrisaga.blogspot.com/">doing very well</a> after having both front ankles fused and a good quantity of metalwork put in there, so I should have him send Teuflesberg a note of encouragement). </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">The word is that <a href="http://www.ireland.com/sports/other/2007/1008/1191668736648.html">Dylan Thomas is Breeders&#8217; Cup-bound</a> before heading off to stud.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Finally, of course, <a href="http://superfectablog.blogspot.com/2007/10/john-henry-1975-2007.html">John Henry</a>. Horse racing has lost one of the last of the truly great champions and the sport is poorer for it. </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">At least we have some up-and-coming human stars like <a href="http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-horse7oct07,1,6611446.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-sports">17 year old jockey Joe Talamo</a> to keep an eye on. And the future usually looks brighter after the Juvenile&#8230;</span></p>
