<p>This coming weekend&#8217;s big feature is <a href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/51137/einstein-top-weight-for-stephen-foster">the Stephen Foster</a>, in which <span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein</span> (pictured) has been assigned the high weight of 124 pounds. You may recall that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein</span> finished second to ex-stablemate <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> in this race last year, so I am very much hoping he finally wins it. There should be some serious competition from horses such as <span style="font-weight: bold;">Arson Squad</span> and I&#8217;m curious to see <a href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/104207.html">where <span style="font-weight: bold;">Macho Again</span> stands</a> in relation to his elders (even if it occasionally seems he&#8217;s the only horse still in training from last year&#8217;s Triple Crown series). But perhaps the most interesting (non-<span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein</span>) entrant will be <span style="font-weight: bold;">Asiatic Boy</span> in his US debut. He&#8217;s been sent from Dubai after a miserable finish in the Dubai World Cup but previous success in the desert under the care of <a href="http://www.mikedekockracing.com/Default.aspx?tabid=35">Mike de Kock</a> &#8211; will the Dubai bounce affect a horse who has never raced in the US before?</p>
<p>We will have more later in the week on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein</span> and the other Stephen Foster participants, as well as a little bit of catching up with the 3-year-olds across the pond, so do <a href="http://www.superfectablog.com/">check back</a>.</p>
<p>Finally, <a href="http://www.greenbutgame.org/2009/06/08/super-8-is-super-indeed/">Dana</a> has clips of some amazing Super 8 footage of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Secretariat</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Seattle Slew</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Affirmed</span> in their respective Belmont post parades &#8211; <a href="http://www.greenbutgame.org/2009/06/08/super-8-is-super-indeed/">check it out</a>!</p>

<p>All in all, this year&#8217;s Belmont was a great day out &#8211; perfect weather, a great undercard and an exciting Belmont Stakes. The fact that we left the track with considerably more money than we came in with was a nice bonus (even if it was followed with a smidgen of &#8216;but we had that and didn&#8217;t bet it&#8217; here and there).</p>
<p>I was quite impressed by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Benny The Bull&#8217;s</span> return in <a href="http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&amp;id=39759">the True North</a> &#8211; I really wasn&#8217;t expecting him to be so close to his best form in his first race back after such a long layoff &#8211; but I&#8217;m also not sure he would have beaten <span style="font-weight: bold;">Fabulous Strike</span> under any circumstances. Given that the track was still only officially &#8216;good&#8217; at that point, nearly equaling the record was certainly impressive all around &#8211; I&#8217;ll look forward to seeing the two hook up again later this summer. We did officially lose a bit of money, since I&#8217;d stuck with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Two Step Salsa</span>. Betting FAIL.</p>
<p>Our wallets bounced back with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Diamondrella</span> in <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=4237274">the Just A Game</a>; I had high hopes for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Modern Look</span> who made a brief run toward the end (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Forever Together</span> was boxed up for the majority of the race), but our across-the-board bet on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Diamondrella</span> more than made up for my losing <span style="font-weight: bold;">Modern Look</span> bet. I was actually surprised to see her go off at such long odds, given that she was coming off an even longer winning streak than <span style="font-weight: bold;">Forever Together</span>.</p>
<p>Around the Just A Game is when the MTV kids showed up and began filming; I still have no idea what that was all about or when it will air, but hey, if it&#8217;s getting 15-year-old kids to the track, why not? (Although I have to say we thought the kids in question were even younger &#8211; if, indeed, it was a dating show as rumored, I can&#8217;t think of many places beyond the track where a tween couple might go for a cheap afternoon out &#8211; but are they even old enough to bet?)</p>
<p><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=4237285">The Woody Stephens</a> was another money-loser for us; I&#8217;d toyed with a last-minute across-the-board bet on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Munnings</span> after seeing how great he looked in the post parade, but we stuck with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hull</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Everyday Heroes </span>boxed with<span style="font-weight: bold;"> This Ones for Phil</span>. Naturally, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Munnings</span> won impressively. Lesson learned &#8211; or not.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2009/June/06/Gabbys-Golden-Gal-shines-in-Acorn-upset.aspx">The Acorn</a> was where we really got stung; we&#8217;d been boxing exactas all day, but did a straight one with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gabby&#8217;s Golden Ga</span>l underneath <span style="font-weight: bold;">Justwhistledixie</span>. You can look at that as having cost either $2, or something closer to $90. I think that one will bother me for a little while.</p>
<p>I finally made my way out to the paddock before <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2009/June/06/Gio-Ponti-storms-to-Manhattan-victory.aspx">the Manhattan</a> &#8211; even on a relatively-lightly-attended Belmont day, getting from the seats to the paddock and back in time is no speedy matter, but I wasn&#8217;t going to miss a chance to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Better Talk Now</span> up close (again &#8211; I may have more photos of him than of any other horse in training) &#8211; even though I didn&#8217;t hold out much hope of him doing well in the actual race. Of course, he looked wonderful in the paddock and I kept thinking how great it was that he looked so fit and ready to go at his age &#8211; but of course I left him out of my trifecta anyway. I was busy taking pictures of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Wesley</span>, whose third-place finish in the Dixie on Preakness day had rewarded me fairly handsomely, and I&#8217;d invested accordingly. I had some complicated tickets with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gio Ponti</span> over <span style="font-weight: bold;">Wesley</span> and/or <span style="font-weight: bold;">Court Vision</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cosmonaut</span>, but none of them included either <span style="font-weight: bold;">Better Talk Now</span> or eventual second-place finisher <span style="font-weight: bold;">Marsh Side</span> (nor were any just on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gio Ponti</span> &#8211; I&#8217;d assumed, for some reason, that he&#8217;d go off at something like 2-1 and figured it wasn&#8217;t worth the effort &#8211; whoops). But it was great to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Better Talk Now</span> fighting on for third &#8211; clearly, he&#8217;s not done. I was disappointed with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Wesley&#8217;s</span> performance, but I&#8217;ll assume for future reference that he just doesn&#8217;t like soft turf.</p>
<p>Finally, it was time for the big race; after failing to find anywhere I could bet my dime superfecta (clerks couldn&#8217;t do one, which seems ludicrous, nor was there any place obvious to get a card for the betting machines), I put together a $1 version in which I threw out <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chocolate Candy</span> &#8211; I&#8217;d picked <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Charitable Man</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Bird</span>. However, we ended up deciding it would be too expensive to box and we didn&#8217;t want to bet it straight, so we nixed the idea. (Sigh.) Instead, we had an exacta box with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Bird</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> as well as an across-the-board bet on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Bird</span>. When <span style="font-weight: bold;">Charitable Man</span> drifted up to 5-1, I also put a show bet on him &#8211; I just couldn&#8217;t get into the idea of him winning for some reason.</p>
<p>I had very different takes on the race in person and when I watched it back on television &#8211; like many, I thought initially that Calvin Borel moved far too soon on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span> (I was a little surprised he only had one other mount on the card, given how infrequently he visits Belmont, and thought that might have been a factor). I revised my opinion somewhat after checking in at home with my TiVo &#8211; I&#8217;m not sure he had much of a choice, since the little horse was clearly eager to go. Both <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> ran tough, gritty races and deserve commendation &#8211; poor <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> still seemed like he didn&#8217;t quite get what this was all about but was just hanging in there with pure talent. I can&#8217;t say I love how his career has been managed thus far &#8211; I would be very curious to see how he would do in a different training situation.</p>
<p>Of course, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Bird</span> ran a terrific race to win &#8211; I was very dubious about Kent Desormeax riding, but it made more sense in the context of trainer Tim Ice&#8217;s personal relationship with him. I&#8217;ve never been a fan of Desormeax in the Belmont, but this time he got it right on and ensured that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Summer Bird</span> had the perfect trip. I hope to see him hook up with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rachel Alexandra</span> later this summer. I imagine that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Birdstone&#8217;s</span> $10,000 stud fee will be shooting up into the stratosphere after siring 2/3 of the winners in this year&#8217;s Triple Crown series (as well as Oaks runner-up <span style="font-weight: bold;">Stone Legacy</span>, among others) &#8211; he and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Medaglia d&#8217;Oro</span> seem to be on quite a streak lately &#8211; I wonder if Darley will try to swoop in for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Birdstone</span> as well.</p>
<p>And I have another note about <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span> in response to the idiot at the track who was loudly proclaiming that he &#8216;should have been taken down&#8217; (even though <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> was obviously the subject of the post-race inquiry) and that he was a &#8216;worthless horse who will never win another race&#8217; &#8211; stfu, dude! This little gelding won the Derby, was a close second in the Preakness and not far off for third in the Belmont &#8211; he&#8217;s assured a place in history for that alone, and he&#8217;s clearly bursting with talent. Obviously you are still bitter you missed him in the Derby and left him out of your trifecta on Saturday &#8211; but if you&#8217;re planning to write him off and never bet him again, well, I&#8217;m happy to think I&#8217;ll get slightly better odds on him as a result. I look forward to a long and prosperous career for him &#8211; and hopefully for everyone who ran on Saturday.</p>
<p>I look forward to discovering <a href="http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&amp;id=39798">who will appear</a> in the Haskell, the Travers, etc. &#8211; and am pleased we have such a good group working toward the Breeders&#8217; Cup this fall (especially when you consider the older horses like <span style="font-weight: bold;">Einstein</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Brass Hat</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Better Talk Now</span>). Perhaps I will need to think about a trip to LA&#8230;</p>
<p>In the meantime, feel free to browse my Belmont day pictures <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/79427532@N00/sets/72157619323004707/">here</a>.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">1 / Chocolate Candy / G. Gomez / J. Hollendorfer / 10-1</span><br />I&#8217;ve been excited about <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chocolate Candy</span> for a while, and I love that he&#8217;s getting Garrett Gomez. His fifth-place finish in the Derby was respectable, given the way that race was run, and of course his California record is not bad at all. Definitely one I&#8217;ll be watching, even though I haven&#8217;t gone back and re-jigged his West Coast Beyers as per the <a href="http://drf.com/news/article/104272.html">new synthetic formula</a>.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">2 / Dunkirk / J. Velazquez / T. Pletcher / 4-1</span><br />I did not like him in the Derby based on his lack of preparation, but for a horse making his fourth lifetime start, he actually ran pretty well, given what a terrible trip he had. I&#8217;m not usually a fan of Derby excuses, but he certainly had some legitimate ones. I don&#8217;t think he&#8217;ll win, but I do think he will be a factor.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">3 / Mr. Hot Stuff / E. Prado / E. Harty / 15-1</span><br />While I like that he&#8217;s by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiznow</span> (and really like his dam&#8217;s pedigree) and I&#8217;m a fan of Eoin Harty, he doesn&#8217;t seem quite fast enough &#8211; he&#8217;s never won a stakes race.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">4 / Summer Bird / K. Desormeaux / T. Ice / 12-1</span><br />Before the Derby, I wrote him off as being more of a Belmont horse &#8211; and while he&#8217;s got a great pedigree for this race, I was really put off by the jockey change from Joe Talamo to Kent Desormeaux. The <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2009/June/04/Summer-Bird-could-be-the-value-play-for-Belmont-Stakes.aspx">Sheets folks</a> love this horse, but his Beyers haven&#8217;t been spectacular. Feel free to pick your formula.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">5 / Luv Gov / M. Mena / D. W. Lukas / 20-1</span><br />While it&#8217;s true a horse from Marylou Whitney&#8217;s stable has sprung the Belmont upset before, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Birdstone</span> had a much stronger resume coming into the race. He does seem to be improving, but it&#8217;s hard not to be with only a maiden win.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">6 / Charitable Man / A. Garcia / K. McLaughlin / 3-1</span><br />His win over the Belmont track in the Peter Pan and his Belmont-winning sire are making him a popular choice; he&#8217;s still pretty lightly-raced, but he does have the services of Alan Garcia and clearly likes the track. Again, though, his Beyers are not that exciting and I wonder about the distance for him based on how much encouragement he needed in the Peter Pan.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">7 / Mine That Bird / C. Borel / C. Woolley / 2-1</span><br />If you had informed me on May 1st that a little over a month later I&#8217;d be cheering for a little <span style="font-weight: bold;">Birdstone</span> gelding who had prepped in Canada and New Mexico, I would have assumed you were working on some sort of horse racing alternate universe parody. Yet here we are &#8211; and if you compare Early Period Bob Baffert to Chip Woolley&#8217;s position now, it&#8217;s not wildly dissimilar &#8211; have a look at <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/1996/05/17/sports/horse-racing-blue-collar-cavonnier-imperils-lukas-streak.html">this article from 1996</a> which speaks of Baffert training &#8216;&#8230;blue-light specials from K-mart&#8217; to great success while D. Wayne Lukas had the best-bred horses handed to him.</p>
<p>But back to the horse himself &#8211; some have knocked his running style as not the best for the Belmont &#8211; yet that single move from near the back of the pack is exactly how his sire, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Birdstone</span>, won the race. The other caution, Calvin Borel&#8217;s lack of experience at Belmont, seems a more legitimate concern &#8211; but if he&#8217;s guaranteeing victory, hey, why not?</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">8 / Flying Private / J. Leparoux / D. W. Lukas / 12-1</span><br />I was actually somewhat impressed by his Preakness finish &#8211; but I don&#8217;t know that he&#8217;s going to improve off of that. His biggest asset, in my opinion, is having Julien Leparoux aboard &#8211; he&#8217;s going to be a busy man on Saturday.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">9 / Miner&#8217;s Escape / J. Lezcano / N. Zito / 15-1</span><br />Zito-trained winner of the Federico Tesio has a really interesting pedigree (he&#8217;s by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mineshaft</span>, his dam is by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Broad Brush</span>) but his resume is rather thin otherwise (and his Beyers are low). But if we&#8217;re working on the &#8216;bet a Zito longshot in the Belmont&#8217; principle, he&#8217;s the one I would go with.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">10 / Brave Victory / R. Maragh / N. Zito / 15-1</span><br />He was third in the Peter Pan, so at least he knows this track &#8211; but again, he was third in the Peter Pan. That will look a lot more impressive if <span style="font-weight: bold;">Charitable Man</span> wins, but he seems the weaker of the two Zito longshots.</p>
<p>Bring on the Calvin Crown! If I&#8217;m being forced to bet a dime superfecta, here it goes: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mine That Bird</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chocolate Candy</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Miner&#8217;s Escape</span>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be Twittering (<a href="http://twitter.com/superfecta">@superfecta</a>) and live-blogging all afternoon from Belmont &#8211; feel free to follow along!</p>

If <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pioneerof the Nile</span> stays at good odds, he&#8217;ll get a little support too.</p>
<p>If it stays wet, I&#8217;ll also put something on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span>. Hmm&#8230;</p>
<p>Quite a surprising start to Derby morning so far!</p>
<p>I am sorry that we won&#8217;t get to see Joe Talamo ride in his first Derby this year &#8211; but if there&#8217;s another young jockey who deserves a great chance to win, it&#8217;s Gabriel Saez.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Update: </span>I&#8217;m heading off for a Derby party shortly (and will be playing with some newborn foals there &#8211; perhaps one of them will make the field in 2012), but am also considering a small wager on the Dubai horses and perhaps <span style="font-weight: bold;">Musket Man</span>. I may or may not have Twitter access (I&#8217;m <a href="http://twitter.com/superfecta">@superfecta</a>, if you&#8217;re not already following me), but if all goes well, I hope to have at least a few comments there.</p>
<p>Have a great Derby day!</p>

Without further ado, here is your official Superfecta Kentucky Derby handicapping exercise for 2009 &#8211; as ever, with the note that my recent successes with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Smarty Jones </span>and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Barbaro</span> are tempered by the fact that my last correctly-predicted winner was <span style="font-weight: bold;">Winning Colors</span> in 1988. You have been warned.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />1) </span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">West Side Bernie</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Seems to be improving, has some good seasoning. Second to <span style="font-weight: bold;">I Want Revenge </span>last time out.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Not sure he wants the distance &#8211; or if he&#8217;s fast enough</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">2)</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Musket Man</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Keeps looking better and better in retrospect<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Not a huge fan of jockey Eibar Coa</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">3)</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mr. Hot Stuff</span> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> I like trainer Eoin Harty<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Looks like a sprinter/miler</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">4) Advice</span> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Nice move in his last race<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Polytrack specialist</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">5) Hold Me Back</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Not among the very best, but could hit the board<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Does he also prefer Polytrack?</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">6) Friesan Fire</span> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Love the breeding, love his versatility<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Layoff could be a downside &#8211; or could leave him fresh</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">7) Papa Clem</span> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Love his recent old-school workout and everything else<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Rain?</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">9) Join in the Dance</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Still looking for one<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Rabbit</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">10) Regal Ransom</span> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside: </span>Love Alan Garcia on just about anything<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside: </span>UAE form still a question mark</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">11) Chocolate Candy </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Great breeding, great form in California<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> First time on real dirt; wet track might not suit</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">12) General Quarters</span> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside: </span>Great story, continual improvement, love switch to Julien Leparoux<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside: </span>Is he fast enough?</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">13) I Want Revenge </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Looks very, very tough to beat; like Joe Talamo<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Mullins et al. do not appeal</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">14) Atomic Rain </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Let me know when you find one<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Yes</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">15) Dunkirk </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside: </span>Florida Derby performance; high Tomlinson rating<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> couldn&#8217;t do it with so few races</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">16) Pioneerof the Nile </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside: </span>California record; possibility that Bode Baffert will sing in the winner&#8217;s circle<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Low Beyers &#8211; and the dirt question</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">17) Summer Bird </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> I like his pedigree&#8230;<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> &#8230;but not on 3 lifetime starts</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">18) Nowhere to Hide </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Um&#8230;Nick Zito surprise? Likes an off track?<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Seems entirely outclassed</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">19) Desert Party </span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> Breeding, previous record<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> What did he beat in Dubai?</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">20) Flying Private</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Upside:</span> *crickets*<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Downside:</span> Indeed</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Preferences:</span> I&#8217;d love to see a <span style="font-weight: bold;">Friesan Fire/Papa Clem/Chocolate Candy/General Quarters</span> superfecta.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Prediction &#8211; dry track:</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">I Want Revenge/Friesan Fire/Papa Clem/General Quarters</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Prediction &#8211; wet track: Friesan Fire/General Quarters/Dunkirk/I Want Revenge</span></p>
<p>Wagering to be determined tomorrow, probably en route to the Derby party I&#8217;ll be attending &#8211; check back later today for some semi-liveblogging of Kentucky Oaks day!</p>

If the predicted deluge does indeed materialize around post time, I&#8217;m leaning toward a <span style="font-weight: bold;">Friesan Fire</span>/<span style="font-weight: bold;">General Quarters</span>/<span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> trifecta (even though I&#8217;m not otherwise on the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dunkirk</span> bandwagon). However, I could also see a replay of the Louisiana Derby if things get really muddy &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Papa Clem</span> could get up for second behind <span style="font-weight: bold;">Friesan Fire</span> again.</p>
<p>However, high <a href="http://www.drf.com/misc/tomlinson.html">Tomlinson ratings</a> alone aren&#8217;t going to raise <span style="font-weight: bold;">Join in the Dance</span> or <span style="font-weight: bold;">Nowhere to Hide</span> much in my estimation &#8211; but it could mean that even with a sloppy track, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Join in the Dance</span> tears away to set a fairly wicked pace. Although I really like <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chocolate Candy</span>, if it&#8217;s coming up very damp, I may decide it won&#8217;t be his afternoon (and I&#8217;d have the perfect excuse to toss <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pioneerof the Nile</span> entirely). I can&#8217;t decide where <span style="font-weight: bold;">I Want Revenge</span> figures in the event of truly bad weather &#8211; but given how quickly the track dries at Churchill Downs, it&#8217;s likely an outside possibility. Still, it&#8217;s good to be prepared.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s hoping the weather holds off long enough that we get to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span> <a href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/50534/zenyatta-may-not-run-on-oaks-undercard">run tomorrow</a> (and that we have a good view of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rachel Alexandra</span> demolishing the Oaks field). More to come then&#8230;</p>

It will be interesting to see if his good recent form in Florida translates back to Kentucky; in any case, it&#8217;s probably unlikely that many other Derby starters started their careers in a 14K claimer at Churchill Downs. It&#8217;s worth reflecting that his eleven lifetime starts give him nearly four times as much racing experience as, say, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Dunkirk</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ></p>
<p>Hold Me Back</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Massone</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> both finished the race well too &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Massone</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will head to more synthetic surfaces </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=14665">in California</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, while </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Hold Me Back</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=14665">on track</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for a Derby berth.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Also likely to make the field now is the aforementioned </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Dunkirk</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; largely because Arkansas Derby runner-up </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Old Fashioned</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has a date </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.nwanews.com/adg/Sports/257229/">with Rood &amp; Riddle</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, rather than Churchill Downs. They grey colt fractured his knee (although it was not apparent at any point during the race) and we&#8217;ve very likely seen the last of him on the track (given his value at stud), so Coolmore&#8217;s </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Dunkirk</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is left to carry the </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Unbridled&#8217;s Song</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> banner in the Derby (and make of that what you will &#8211; this is owner Rick Porter&#8217;s third prominent </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Unbridled&#8217;s Song</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span> offspring to meet with a serious injury on the Derby trail, after<span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > Rockport Harbor</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and, of course, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Eight Belles</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">). </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>But it was a very interesting race; I was glad to see </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Papa Clem</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> finally get </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2009/April/12/Stute-savors-magical-moment-with-Papa-Clem.aspx">a big win</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> (pictured), since I felt he&#8217;d been flying under the radar for far too long (and his win vaulted me to the top of the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.brooklynbackstretch.com/2009/04/road-to-roses-update.html">Brooklyn Backstretch</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.roadtotheroses.com/">Road to the Roses</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> league). He&#8217;s been steadily improving (and getting some bad luck along the way) and while his 99 Beyer for the Arkansas Derby wasn&#8217;t earth-shattering, I think he&#8217;s going to be a lot of fun to watch.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">It&#8217;s still not clear whether </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Mafaaz&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/50191/no-word-on-mafaaz-patena-to-regroup">deeply uninspiring</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> effort in the Blue Grass will put him on a plane back to England; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Patena&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> non-firing in the same race means that the horse will be &#8216;</span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/50191/no-word-on-mafaaz-patena-to-regroup">regrouping</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.&#8217; (Given that IEAH purchased the horse with the sole intent of running him in the Derby, one wonders if he&#8217;ll quietly slip away in a claiming race &#8211; after all, they have </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >I Want Revenge now</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">). Larry Jones must be glad he has </span><a style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/50197/friesan-fire-works-at-keeneland">Friesan Fire</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> to fall back on; despite the seven-week layoff, he&#8217;s still one of my top Derby picks (</span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.paulickreport.com/">this week</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">):</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>1) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >I Want Revenge</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">2) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Friesan Fire</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br />3) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Chocolate Candy</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br />4) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >General Quarters</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br />5) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Papa Clem</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br />6) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Quality Road</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br />7) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Pioneerof the Nile</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br /> <img src='http://superfectablog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Regal Ransom</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><br />9) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Musket Man</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">10) </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Hold Me Back</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>So, we&#8217;re nearly done with Derby prep season; yes, there&#8217;s still the Coolmore Lexington next weekend, and once upon a time the Derby Trial mattered to the Derby field, but in reality we&#8217;re nearly there. Check back later in the week for more on how the field is shaping up.</span></p>

To that end, his connections have provided a </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.kentucky.com/232/story/739030.html">pricey rabbit</a> in the form of <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Europe</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; a $2.6 million dollar yearling purchase I can only assume is named after the famed Swedish hair-pop-metal band. </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.pedigreequery.com/europe5">Europe</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is a full brother to </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Half Ours</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, who was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.taylormadestallions.com/horses/half-ours/">retired to stud</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> after a leg injury, but his goal here is to set a wicked pace for </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Dunkirk</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> to close on &#8211; we&#8217;ll see if that was worth the investment on Saturday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">As an aside, I challenge anyone to watch </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Europe</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> without hearing &#8216;The Final Countdown&#8217; in their heads &#8211; it&#8217;s unavoidable.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">But this race has quite an interesting field &#8211; I like </span><a style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2009/March/25/Quality-Road-tries-to-pave-way-to-Louisville-in-Florida-Derby.aspx">Quality Road</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> a lot and have not really been sure where </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Theregoesjojo</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> fits as far as this year&#8217;s crop goes. I&#8217;m particularly interested since it seems that trainer Kenny McPeek is </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/102353.html">still thinking</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> of the Epsom Derby for him if he does well this weekend &#8211; would he use the Kentucky version as a prep? It&#8217;s an interesting notion.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Wouldn&#8217;t it be amusing if </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Europe</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> took off and ran away with the whole thing?</span></p>
