After yesterday’s musical interlude, you’re no doubt waiting expectantly for a full race-by-race analysis. Well, with today being my last day at Penn Vet, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. But don’t despair, today brings you some of my (hopefully) live longshots for each race.

Filly & Mare Sprint
With La Traviata in this race, it makes it a very interesting betting race since she’s such a prohibitive favorite. It means that Wild Gams (who we already know loves Monmouth) and Baroness Thatcher could both go off at long odds — at least considerably longer odds than they might otherwise.

Juvenile Turf
Old Man Buck is now pointed to the Juvenile rather than the Juvenile Turf, otherwise I would happily pick him in this category. I generally avoid Todd Pletcher’s horses in the Breeders’ Cup, but I’ll pick The Leopard as my longshot (and no, not just because Leopard comes out the same day).

Dirt Mile
Lewis Michael is my official longshot for this race; Corinthian could be back in form as well, but he won’t be at nearly as long a price. If the bettors all go off Discreet Cat, it’s entirely possible he’d be worth some investm ent as well.

Juvenile Fillies
A to the Croft will have blinkers for the first time and I like her a lot; I think there’s been so much buzz about Smarty Deb and her feel-good story that she won’t be quite the same value (but should not be overlooked).

Juvenile
Old Man Buck should be in here at a good price; he may not win, but I can easily see him hitting the board behind Tale of Ekati. Salute the Sarge (a half-brother to Chelokee) could offer some value as well. And if you want to know how Tale of Ekati got his name, check out Diamond: The History of a Cold-Blooded Love Affair. It gets complicated!

Filly & Mare Turf
This should be a great race with some solid favorites in Nashoba’s Key and Precious Kitten; given her inconsistency of late, Honey Ryder could have long odds. If it does indeed rain Saturday, I may give an edge to the Europeans — I might consider Timarwa if it comes up soft.

Sprint
Idiot Proof has set a record at Monmouth already; Kelly’s Landing won the Dubai Golden Shaheen and has been quiet since, but he clearly loves this distance. The long layoff should translate to longer odds.

Mile
Purim is my longshot, but this is a great field; if Silent Name and/or Remarkable News come up with silly odds too, I’ll be putting a bit in those buckets as well.

Distaff
I think Unbridled Belle is going to be overlooked and a good value (despite her good record of late); Teammate still needs a G1 win and could get it here.

Turf
I have just one sentimental longshot on the day — Better Talk Now. He’s updated his MySpace page to let us know he’s rested and ready.

Classic
Tiago is flying completely under the radar and seems to be improving. Don’t count him out. Of course, if you want to put money on George Washington in this race, be my guest!

Check back starting tomorrow for a full analysis of each race now that the post positions are set…

First, the West Coast:

Tiago performed well in his first outing against older horses in the Goodwood Handicap (Lava Man was scratched in favor of a race next weekend), although he was certainly tested by Awesome Gem — nevertheless, his victory was very professional. I would also like to see more of third-place finisher Lewis Michael, perhaps in a slightly shorter race; I believe he has a lot of potential but has never quite found his rhythm although he seems comfortable on both dirt and grass. Some may recall he finished third to a horse named Barbaro in the Florida Derby and did not look bad in that defeat; I’d like to see him in the Dirt Mile.

Nashoba’s Key switched back to grass for the Yellow Ribbon and still remains unbeaten, holding off a strong challenge from Citronnade. As I’ve mentioned before, the Filly & Mare Turf division is going to be the hardest one to handicap — but more on that later. It is perhaps more impressive to consider that Nashoba’s Key began this winning streak when she began her racing career earlier this year as a four-year-old and she seems to improve with each race.

Switching to the East Coast, but staying with the girls on grass, the Flower Bowl was certainly an interesting race. Lahudood set a stakes record in her win (her first graded win in America, as a helpful reader has pointed out), but Roskina (one of my picks) was a fine second ahead of Wait a While. It seems that the talented My Typhoon was not a huge fan of the very firm going, as she was never a factor (but she should not be discounted come Breeders’ Cup day). As mentioned above, the Filly & Mare Turf division is full of talent already — once everyone else ships in from Europe, it’s practically a toss-up since a good argument can be made for any number of top horses. It’s going to be a highlight of Breeders’ Cup day.

Discreet Cat’s return to the races in the Vosburgh did not play out as planned; his dull third was not a particularly confidence-inspiring performance, but the excuses are built-in — the long layoff, he needed the race, he needed more distance (although he certainly did not seem to need it at that particular point in time), etc. But the good news is that it means the new Dirt Mile will have a marquee contender, which is something it probably needed — and it should also mean that he needs to stay in training next year to really prove himself. If anything, the victory by Fabulous Strike should continue to raise his sire Smart Strike’s stud fee — three grade I wins for his offspring in one weekend (see English Channel and Curlin below) cannot hurt.

Back on the turf, English Channel looked tremendous in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (his second victory in the race, which is a remarkable statistic these days for a stallion); I don’t know whether that means he’s quite in the same league as some of the expected European heavy-hitters, but it was a gutsy run and a very encouraging sign. It would be nice to see more horses with a career of consistent top-level performances. Given that he was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf as a 3-year old and third last year, he does have a good shot, but it’s going to be a tough race.

The Distaff division is clearly missing Rags to Riches; Unbridled Belle looked good beating stablemate Indian Vale in the Beldame although Ginger Punch did not seem quite her usual self. While Unbridled Belle seems to be coming into her own, she’s not really in the same class as Rags to Riches and the division is poorer for her absence. Without her, it’s a reasonably solid, but somewhat uninspiring group. However, I’ve always maintained that winning the Del Cap can propel a mare on to bigger and better things, and Unbridled Belle clearly took that to heart — not bad for a $4,000 purchase.

Finally, of course, the Classic division. As predicted, Hard Spun bested Street Sense, but he had everything his own way in a tiny field and on a surface he loves. He’s unlikely to get to set the pace and lead wire to wire in the Classic, which seems to be his preferred running style; Street Sense didn’t look tired to me as much as not necessarily pushed to his full potential — the race seemed more of a rehearsal for him. As I’ve said before, I like Hard Spun a lot and would love him at a mile (and he looked fine at the 1 1/8 as well), but I’m not sure he loves the 1 1/4 distance, and Street Sense does. As ever, trainer Carl Nafzger made no excuses and looks forward to the next dance:

Carl Nafzger, handler of Street Sense, was gracious in defeat. “It was up to him at the head of the lane to get by Hard Spun,” he said, “but he just outran us. We were right there and we got beat; that’s horseracing, no excuses. But we’re ready for next time.”

Curlin proved me wrong, gamely holding off Lawyer Ron in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, although Lawyer Ron didn’t do himself any favors — he seemed rank early on and was in the center of the track for much of the race. It could easily be argued that he just prefers Saratoga to Belmont — but even if that is the case, it seems there was some concern from trainer Steve Asmussen that Lawyer Ron’s pressure was a tough challenge for Curlin:

Asmussen called the Gold Cup “trophies in their own right” but acknowledged it was not his ultimate goal. That comes in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Oct. 27 at Monmouth Park.

“Everyone knows the Classic is the pinnacle,” he said. “And I’m extremely concerned that he left too much out there today.”

The bottom line is that all the Classic contenders who raced this past weekend looked good and will likely go off at relatively short odds on come the evening of Breeders’ Cup Saturday, but I can imagine quite a few scenarios in which a European horse runs off with the prize. We’ll have to wait and see who ships in…

Turfway Park did well to ensure that the heavy hitters turned up for the Kentucky Cup Classic — there’s a $150,000 bonus on the line for horses who have won a Grade I in 2006 or 2007. While we know Hard Spun likes Polytrack, we have yet to see Street Sense pick up a victory over the surface, although in all likelihood he’s here just to prep — a win would be a bonus. I still believe Hard Spun’s best distance is a mile, but there’s no real reason they should not finish 1-2 — and this time Hard Spun has the rail (and is really the only speed in the race). There are a few Polytrack specialists thrown in for good measure, though — that is, I’m presuming the Biancone-trained Stream Cat does not require cobra venom to be at his best on the surface.

While Curlin and Lawyer Ron are the obvious draws in the JCGC, I also like Sun King; he always seems to have potential but does not quite live up to it. I still think he’s a solid horse and could easily hit the board (and given that some may be tempted to use the race as ‘just a prep’ you never know what might happen). Political Force may have disappointed recently, but he’s still one to watch as well. I don’t see Curlin beating his elders at this point, but he should put in a good effort. I’m picking Lawyer Ron to win, but Sun King is in there as my longshot.

Discreet Cat has certainly been under the radar since his disappointing effort in the Dubai World Cup, but he returns this weekend in the Vosburgh. He’s back at a distance he seems to relish and it will be interesting to see if he does bounce back well from his six month layoff. I like Teuflesberg at this distance too, but I’m a little concerned about his recent spate of entries and scratches; rumors swirl that all is not well in the Teuflesberg camp, but I hope they are just rumors.

Possibly being overlooked with everything else going on is the Flower Bowl — it’s got a great field featuring Wait a While, My Typhoon and the interesting Argentina; I also like Rosinka and Royal Highness. It should be a very exciting finish and any one of these talented fillies and mares could emerge victorious. The Filly & Mare Turf division is overflowing with talent, and it will only become more exciting when the main European contingent ships in for the Breeders’ Cup.

Finally, after a great weekend of racing, you might make your way to your local quality beer establishment in time for the National Toast to Michael Jackson at 9 pm ET on Sunday. (Locations confirmed to be joining in the memorial are listed here). Raise a glass to the great man and make a donation to the National Parkinson’s Foundation. If you’ve been saving a JW Lees Harvest Ale (the late ’90s vintages are particularly tasty), now’s the time to break it out.

Superfecta here, deputizing for Alex; naturally much of the news this morning is on Barbaro’s newest full sibling, born yesterday morning at Mill Ridge Farm. There’s a picture of the new colt here and some more detail about La Ville Rouge’s other foals here. I’ll add more links throughout the weekend as they appear.

In the ‘litigation – it’s not just for 3-year-olds‘ category we have an appearance by Lawyer Ron, whose owners are arguing over his racing career. As of now, he’s being pointed toward the Metropolitan Mile, but his next move could well be decided by the courts. It’s clearly a busy season in Kentucky legal circles.

Things are not so rosy for Godolphin either; Ashkal Way has a tendon injury and it sounds as though he might return to training in the future, but it’s equally possible that he might head toward retirement. Discreet Cat is also delaying his return to the races (and to the US), but the indication (so far) is that he will re-appear later this year. His absence will no doubt make the Met Mile more attractive for Lawyer Ron…if he’s allowed to race!

For today’s Coolmore Lexington, we’re told to ‘look for quicker pace than Blue Grass‘ — I’m awarding them my Understatement of the Month award in advance. I still like the Lasix-free Belgravia.

Be that as it may (and I hope he recovers soon), I’m not convinced he wants to go much more than a mile. Indeed, that seemed to be Saeed bin Suror’s thought as well (at least prior to his medical exam):

“He didn’t stay the distance,” said the colt’s trainer, Saeed bin Suroor. “We’re going to give him a break and cut him back to a mile.”

Godolphin was so keen to get the word out that there’s an official statement on their web site — so you’ve all been told! (I still maintain that Discreet Cat is no Invasor).

Speaking of legitimate excuses, I was most impressed by Chelokee’s third-place finish in the Florida Derby. I thought he looked like he got squeezed badly (although it was had to tell on the tiny video provided by NBC) and it sounds like it was a bit rougher than that. With a bit more racing luck and a longer distance, I think he’d have been right there at the finish.

(And how cool is Fernando Jara?) I was actually more impressed by his gutsy effort in the Donn than his Breeders’ Cup victory, and his stretch duel with the fantastic Premium Tap today was tremendous. Discreet Cat even looked a bit green (with his limited number of lifetime starts, perhaps that’s to be expected) at the start and then seemed like he wanted no part of the distance — missing his prep did him no favors. He may well be the best miler in the world, but he certainly seems to require kid gloves.

Asiatic Boy’s performance in the UAE Derby was also very impressive — clearly, they are doing something right breeding-wise in South America.

Overall impressions: Invasor is scary and should keep off the Lasix, Discreet Cat needs everything to go his own way, Premium Tap is seriously underrated, Lava Man still can’t leave the Golden State, my iPod is no prognosticator of victory.

In a rare show of agreement (albeit with a modified vocabulary), the Guardian and the Mirror both seem to be backing Invasor while the Belfast Telegraph and Setanta both go for Discreet Cat.

Lest we think it’s a two-horse race, there are some fantastic odds on everyone else and some fair ones on Premium Tap who seems to be flying under the radar. I’ll go on record as picking Invasor.

Lava Man’s trip to compete in the Dubai Duty Free has not gone unnoticed by the foreign press either — by all accounts, he looks like he’s happy to be there. I’d love to see a one-two finish for Lava Man and Miesque’s Approval. Trainer Doug O’Neill stayed stateside to look after his Derby hopefuls, including Notional who runs in the Florida Derby this Saturday. (In said race, I also like Chelokee, who seems to be improving, and Stormello — I know Scat Daddy is good but he’s never grabbed me for some reason).

Finally, my complete picks for Dubai World Cup day:

Godolphin Mile:
I’ll pick Vortex.

UAE Derby
I’d love to see Folk do well, as per my usual filly-takes-on-the-boys bias, but Asiatic Boy is looking good too. I’ll take a pass on Day Pass.

Dubai Golden Shaheen
Is Bishop Court Hill due? How about Harvard Avenue or Nightmare Affair? I may just stick with Thor’s Echo.

Dubai Sheema Classic
Collier Hill should hit the board — I like the old guy. But I love Honey Ryder — and no grey or mare has ever run the race, so I think it’s time.

Dubai Duty Free
Go Lava Man!

Dubai World Cup
Invasor…he is, after all, the best.

You may have heard of some of them. This year’s edition garnered 42 nominations, among them the interesting Chelokee…we’ll see who makes it to the gate.

In New York, two-year olds will also be making their mark in the Remsen (including the Barclay Tagg-trained Nobiz Like Shobiz, if the track is all right); Day Pass, winner of the Nashua, is skipping the race to head to Florida, and, in all likelihood, Dubai. The day’s local headliner will certainly be Discreet Cat in the Cigar Mile.

California offers the Hollywood Derby (not to mention the Matriarch and the Citation) which sees turf star Showing Up facing off against grass novice Brother Derek. Expect some European horses in the mix as well.

Don’t overlook Kentucky; Churchill Downs plays host to the Clark Handicap and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The Clark features the frequently-overlooked (often by me, I admit) Premium Tap and Tiz Wonderful will be appearing in the latter race.

Perhaps the most interesting race all weekend takes place in Japan: Ouija Board takes on Deep Impact and Heart’s Cry in the Japan Cup on Sunday. There are not enough supurlatives in English to describe her, so perhaps the Japanese press will be required to supply some.

Bottom line: There’s a lot of racing this weekend. None of it is on television. Can you tell I can’t get TVG?

In other news, Fleet Indian has had her fetlock fused and is said to be doing well. So, for all our US readers, Happy Thanksgiving!

Tags:
Horse Racing, Fleet Indian

This little ‘insurance policy’ has the further effect of ensuring that Flower Alley won’t make it to the gate.

As a general rule, I don’t usually feel badly for Todd Pletcher (it can’t be a bad thing to break the earnings record) — but I have to agree with him that the situation is ‘a joke.’ Granted, Flower Alley does not seem to be anywhere near his best form, but I’d still like to see him have another shot at the race. I’d much rather see him in the starting gate than, say, Giacomo. (Again, nothing against Giacomo, I just think there are horses with a better shot). I’d prefer to eliminate ‘insurance’ entrants (and possibly rabbits) for Breeders’ Cup day; how this would be enforced is questionable (although I’m in favor of a large fee), of course, but it leaves a bad taste. (Not unlike retiring four of your stars at the same time — two of them three-year-olds — and if George Washington proved he could handle the dirt well, why not give him a few more starts on it next year?).

George Washington’s place in the Classic leaves the Mile ‘safe’ for Araafa and Aussie Rules; while both impressive, I am pulling for Gorella (again). I can respect owners and trainers putting their horses in the races they are most likely to win, but when that becomes little more than a two-sided chess match, it’s less fun to watch. It’s even less exciting when you know four of the top stars are going to disappear to stud after the big day — not a one older than four. I can understand retiring Hurricane Run; he’s had good opportunities to prove himself. But George Washington and Aussie Rules have a lot of potential; it seems unfair to miss what they might be able to do at four.

Ah well.

In other news, there is some evidence (at long last) that Phar Lap was indeed poisoned; it’s not conclusive (indeed, there is much suggestion that it was accidental), but it does add a bit more fuel to the fire. (If you also spent hours watching and discussing the Disney film of his life as a pre-teen girl in the 1980s, you know what I’m talking about. This is possibly why I was convinced for years that Swale had been poisoned). So, still a mystery.

More Breeders’ Cup musing later on…but in the meantime, come on, McDynamo!

It was also nice to see The Tin Man underline his Arlington Million victory with his Clement Hirsch win as well. I’d say Perfect Drift (and of course Premium Tap) had some bad luck and serious traffic issues in the Kentucky Cup Classic.

Discreet Cat looked his usual dominating self in the Jerome Handicap, but I still don’t agree with his placement in the top ten in the Classic Division; while it’s entirely possible he belongs there, he has yet to prove that in a longer race. Either way, we’ll shortly be seeing his half-brother, Pretty Wild, standing here in PA for a modest sum.

Speaking of half-brothers, George Washington’s was the session-topper at Tattersalls, selling for nearly $2.4 million. Their dam, Bordighera, was certainly a smart investment. It’s good to see some Alysheba grand-foals doing so well; I think he’s always been under-valued as a stallion.

Golden Gate Fields held a memorial for Lost in the Fog; it sounds as though it was a well-planned event with DVDs given out to fans, which is a nice gesture, as is the video posted on their web site.

Things continue to look hopeful for Barbaro; there is a great article here and a message from the Jacksons here. The official word is good too. I’m off to the New Bolton Center tomorrow; should I happen to see him out grazing, I’ll let you know…

Tags:
Horse Racing, Wait a While, Barbaro
