There are some interesting betting races but I am most looking forward to seeing some of my favorite horses in action.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >True North Handicap</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Rick Dutrow&#8217;s other favorite on the card, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Benny the Bull</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, is back from Dubai.  </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://thoroughbredbloggersalliance.blogspot.com/">TBA</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> favorite </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Thor&#8217;s Echo</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is also back from a break, now with blinkers on.  The half-blind </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Storm in May</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is a longshot in this race (and deservedly so, given his recent form), but I could see him getting up to show.  I also like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Suave Jazz</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and hope he gets a piece of the action, but it&#8217;s a tough field.</p>
<p></span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Just a Game Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">My favorites for this are chalky as can be &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Criminologist</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Vacare</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Lady of Venice</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">.  Still, if </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ventura&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> odds remain in double-digits near post time, I may put some money on her; I don&#8217;t like overlooking Bobby Frankel-trained turf mares anywhere, but especially not at Belmont.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Acorn </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Welcome back, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">! This won&#8217;t be much of a betting race on paper, but I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing the aforementioned filly return.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Woody Stephens </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">I like a few longshots in this race &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Majestic Warrior</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Fatal Bullet</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">.  </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ready&#8217;s Image</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >J Be K</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> are worthy favorites, but perhaps this will be the race with a little value.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">First, I&#8217;m very annoyed that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Einstein</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> won&#8217;t be in this race &#8212; thanks again, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&amp;id=32859">Midnight Cry</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">!  Perhaps they can decorate their jail cells with their expired NY  licenses.  But I digress; this race is still loaded, most notably with fan favorite </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Better Talk Now </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">(pictured)</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">.  Last year I was sure he was a little past his best <span style="font-family:verdana;">and he got up to win this race &#8212; here&#8217;s hoping he </span></span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horseracing/bal-sp.now06jun06,0,6294014.story">does it again</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.  It&#8217;s going to be a tall order, though, with talent like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Out of Control</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Proudinsky</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Dancing Forever</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the picture.  I also believe </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Shakis</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Stream of Gold</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> have been underperforming and could suddenly get it together tomorrow.  It should be a great race in its own right; much more than an able warm-up for the main event.  I&#8217;m still not drinking </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.woodfordreserve.com/bigbrown/intro.aspx">this</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, though.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Belmont Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">And as to the Belmont itself, if </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is out (and I hope he is not), I see little standing in </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Brown&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> way &#8212; but I will be placing some longshot bets on </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Denis of Cork</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Anak Nakal,</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Icabad Crane</span> and possibly </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Tale of Ekati</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, just in case. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Here&#8217;s one prediction I can with utter certainty: I won&#8217;t be able to do a post-race update until Monday, as I will be busy Sunday watching the US take on Argentina in a friendly at Giants Stadium. This one really is a foregone conclusion: we&#8217;re going to lose, and lose big.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">See you in New York&#8230;</span></p>

<p>However, the strategy in the Belmont often seems to be to get the favorite to run all out from the start &#8212; just ask </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Smarty Jones</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">Either scenario is possible, but </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Smarty Jones</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> also faced a field with more depth to it (even if you believe the talents of some those horses might not have been employed in a strictly sporting fashion) &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Brown</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> may only have one or two horses in this field who can stay with him for very long.</p>
<p>So, without further ado, your </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bodog.com/horse-betting/triple-crown/belmont-stakes/contenders.jsp">Belmont contenders</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><o:p style="font-family: verdana;"></o:p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">1 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> &#8211; Putting his connections and his quarter crack aside, bad racing luck is his major enemy. He has had a charmed existence so far, but the best horse certainly does not necessarily win in this race (see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Bid, Spectacular</span>) &#8211; it&#8217;s his to lose.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">2 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Guadalcanal</span> &#8211; A maiden in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Belmont</st1:place></st1:city> &#8211; call Kenny Mayne!<span style="">  </span>Allegedly he wants the distance, but I see others crossing the wire ahead of him.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">3 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Macho Again</span> &#8211; Nice to see that <s>Julien Leparoux</s> Garrett Gomez has picked up the mount; he&#8217;s talented, and strange things do happen in the Belmont.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">4 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of </span><st1:city style="font-weight: bold;" st="on"><st1:place st="on">Cork</st1:place></st1:city> &#8211; I really like how he&#8217;s been training lately  &#8212; I would love to see him  maintain double-digit odds.  I&#8217;ll say no more.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;"><st1:street st="on"><st1:address st="on">5 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Casino   Drive</span></st1:address></st1:street> &#8211; The real potential history-maker in the race, and not just for <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/02/AR2008060202886.html">his dam</a> &#8211; seeing a <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/triplecrown08/columns/story?columnist=finley_bill&amp;id=3422759">drug-free</a>, foreign-trained horse win the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Belmont</st1:place></st1:city> would send a useful message to the industry.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">6 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Da&#8217;Tara</span> &#8211; Is he a rabbit for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Anak Nakal</span>?<span style="">  </span>Sure, Nick Zito is dangerous in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Belmont</st1:place></st1:city> with longshots, but I don&#8217;t think this is the one.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">7 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span> &#8211; His last workout was better, but I don&#8217;t like how he had been working out up to that point.<span style=""> </span>I like the bottom half of his pedigree a lot more than the top at this distance.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">8 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Anak Nakal</span> &#8211; He&#8217;s done nothing all year to warrant any attention &#8212; no question. However, his recent workouts have been good and his pedigree is ideal for the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Belmont</st1:place></st1:city>.<span style=""> </span>Maybe he&#8217;ll finally get it together &#8211; I will include him in exotics and will probably bet him to place and show.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">9 <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ready&#8217;s Echo</span> &#8211; Another one whose pedigree seems to be half sprint, half route; he could round out a superfecta, or he could finish ninth.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-family:verdana;">10 </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Icabad Crane</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; I think he is likely running for second, and I can certainly see him hitting the board.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> did jog over the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Belmont</st1:place></st1:city> track <a href="http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/27/sports/NA-SPT-RAC-Belmont-Big-Brown.php">today</a> (right), so one would assume his foot is not giving him much, if any, trouble; one wonders if some of the drama over his foot might be more of a Rick Dutrow mind game than anything else; it&#8217;s an obvious excuse to fall back on if things do not go to plan on Belmont day.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p face="verdana" class="MsoPlainText">Other Belmont contenders were working over the weekend; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Anak Nakal</span>(!) worked a bullet at Saratoga, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of Cork</span> put in five furlongs at Churchill Downs, <span style=""> </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span> worked at Belmont, although Barclay Tagg was apparently <a href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/article/45410.htm">less than pleased</a> with his effort and it sounds as though his plan may change.<span style="">  </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span>, now recovered from his <a href="http://foolishpleasure-valerie.blogspot.com/2008/05/mystery-no-more-or-why-tomcito-sucked.html">myectomy</a>, jogged at <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Belmont</st1:place></st1:city> as well.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">In other news, <span style="font-weight: bold;">The Tin Man</span> is apparently doing reasonably well in retirement after a worrying time following a knee fracture, although he&#8217;s still <a href="http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=11925">hampered</a> by the injury.<span style=""> </span>Here&#8217;s hoping he can enjoy a healthy retirement nonetheless.<o:p></o:p></p>

I&#8217;ve been poring over the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/">DRF&#8217;s</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> PPs for the Derby; I like the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.drf.com/tc/kentuckyderby/2008/pps/kentuckyderby08moss.pdf">Moss Pace Figures version</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">.  Here are my conclusions about the field:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">1) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Cool Coal Man</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Nice pedigree and he could do well if it starts off lightning fast and slows to a crawl at the end, but I&#8217;m not a believer</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">2) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Tale of Ekati</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Sure, the Wood was slow, but I think he&#8217;s more talented than we&#8217;ve seen; I also like that he&#8217;s out of a Sunday Silence mare</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">3)</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"> Anak Nakal </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- Very much overmatched, given his current form</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">4) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Court Vision</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; He couldn&#8217;t get it done in the Wood and he&#8217;s not high up on my list, but he does till intrigue me</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">5) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Eight Belles</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; I love <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dixieland Band</span> as a Derby broodmare sire and she seems able to handle any sort of pace scenario -it&#8217;s all about the break</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">6) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Z Fortune </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- I love his sire, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Siphon</span>, and think he could be sitting on a big race</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">7) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Big Truck</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Got some of the worst of it in the Blue Grass, but I&#8217;m not sure he&#8217;s as talented as his stablemate</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;"> <img src='http://superfectablog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Visionaire </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- Battle-tested in the Blue Grass, he&#8217;s in a perfect spot to outrun his pedigree</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">9)</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"> Pyro</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; If the real <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> shows up, he&#8217;s definitely a threat</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">10) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Colonel John</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Nothing not to like, he&#8217;s trained over the Churchill Downs surface beautifully</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">11)</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"> Z Humor</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; I don&#8217;t see any reason for him to be here, much less any sort of factor</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">12) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Smooth Air</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; His recent fever is a little too close for comfort Saturday</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">13) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Bob Black Jack</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Hasn&#8217;t won over 7 furlongs, but should be a pace factor</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">14) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Monba</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; I would happily back him at this distance on turf</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">15) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Adriano</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Ditto, and I love his connections, but I&#8217;d prefer to see him on the grass</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">16) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Denis of Cork</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Terrible prep schedule and he hasn&#8217;t beaten much, but he does have talent</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">17) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Cowboy Cal</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Another one who would be nice to see on turf</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">18) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Recapturetheglory</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; Another one with presumed distance limitations</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">19) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Gayego</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; I like him, but he has a lot to overcome from here</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">20) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Big Brown </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- If he&#8217;s really that good, it will be apparent &#8211; but even </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Curlin</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> couldn&#8217;t get the job done from post 2</span></p>
<p>Let&#8217;s not forget the undercard races:<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"> Churchill Downs </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Wanderin&#8217; Boy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is back</span> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"><br />
La Troienne</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Game Face</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is the likely favorite </span> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"><br />
Churchill Distaff Turf Mile</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Dreaming of Anna</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> returns</span><br />
<span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Humana Distaff </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">- This one is loaded: </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Hystericalady</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Sugar Swirl</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Baroness Thatcher</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Miracle Miss</span> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"><br />
Woodford Reserve</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; I love </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Einstein</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Artiste Royal</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, but it&#8217;s a good field overall</span></p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be out of town tomorrow (yes, I&#8217;ll have to TiVo the Oaks, which I am shamefully neglecting this year &#8211; I like <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Bsharpsonata</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Proud Spell</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">) and then will be rushing back for the Derby undercard races, so below are my final wagering thoughts on the Derby.</span></p>
<p>I have future wagers on the following: <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"><br />
Visionaire</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; 20-1 (I also have <a href="http://www.firstdibz.com/">FirstDibz</a>)</span> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"><br />
Denis of Cork</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; 15-1</span> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;"><br />
Tale of Ekati</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> &#8211; 30-1</span></p>
<p>Some possible boxes (feel free to mix and match):<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Pyro</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Colonel John</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Visionaire</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Eight Belles</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Z Fortune</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Tale of Ekati</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Big Brown</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Official prediction: Visionaire &#8211; Colonel John &#8211; Z Fortune &#8211; Big Brown</span></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">To that end, I always look forward to playing with the <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=999980222054">C-J Derby Data Track</a> (and was pleased to discover its origins in a post at <a href="http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/25/find-a-derby-winner-by-the-numbers/">TheRail</a>); one of the options might prove particularly salient when comparing this year&#8217;s hype horses to last year&#8217;s results &#8212; proven ability to handle traffic.<span style="">  </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Hard Spun</span> had a &#8216;yes&#8217; in that column; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> a no.<span style="">  </span>Beyond the overall &#8216;experience&#8217; tag, this is a factor I like paying attention to.<span style="">  </span>Horses with the dreaded &#8216;no&#8217; this year include quite a few I do like &#8211; including <span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of Cork</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Smooth Air</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gayego</span> and, of course, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>.<span style="">  </span>If I were judging by that factor alone, it would make <span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> look particularly attractive.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"  style="font-family:verdana;">But adding in another factor complicates matters; if I go by highest Beyers, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Bob Black Jack</span> heads straight for the top of the list (which, if anything, looks very &#8216;sprinty&#8217;), followed by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gayego</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Recapturetheglory</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> &#8211; no one else has cracked the 100 mark; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John&#8217;s</span> highest is a 95.<span style="">  </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" face="verdana">Two BRIS speed ratings of 100 or higher yields a more select group &#8212; only <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cool Coal </span><st1:state st="on"><st1:place st="on"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Man</span>.</st1:place></st1:state><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">Whenever I mix and match the factors I&#8217;m most interested in, three horses keep coming back to the top: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tale of Ekati</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span>. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">So, with all that, who do I like (at least in the pre-post-position-draw world)?<o:p></o:p> It&#8217;s looking something like this:<o:p></o:p></p>
<ul  style="font-family:verdana;">
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> &#8211; The <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> show beings in earnest <a href="http://www.thoroughbredblog.com/2008/04/from-outside-of-big-browns-barn.html">today</a></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> &#8211; Seems to like Churchill Downs</li>

<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span> &#8211; I don&#8217;t like the hype or the feet, but there&#8217;s plenty of horse (and a <a href="http://www.ntra.com/blog.aspx?blogid=16">blog</a>, shared with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Court Vision</span>) to appreciate</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> &#8211; Santa Anita&#8217;s <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2008/April/21/Colonel-John-named-Santa-Anitas-horse-of-meet.aspx">Horse of the Meet</a></li>

<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">Last weekend&#8217;s results were disappointing to me (and I&#8217;m fairly agnostic on the Polytrack angle in this instance), since I&#8217;d much prefer to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> in the Derby over a large group of horses whose abilities at a mile and a quarter are questionable at best (and some of those who are bred for the distance scream &#8216;turf&#8217;); I did enjoy the quick segment with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> (perspective notwithstanding, she&#8217;s clearly a big girl) and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Proud Spell</span> as potential Derby entries.<span style=""> </span>The word at this point seems to be that both will definitely be entered, although neither seems a lock to go to the gate <a href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/93875.html"><st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city> day</a>:<o:p></o:p></p>
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8220;We&#8217;re going to enter both fillies in the Oaks,&#8221; Jones said by phone from <st1:place st="on"><st1:placename st="on">Delaware</st1:placename> <st1:placetype st="on">Park</st1:placetype></st1:place>, where he was running horses Monday. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been told to enter Eight Belles in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city>. If Eight Belles draws a good post in the <st1:city st="on">Derby</st1:city>, and a crappy post in the Oaks, she&#8217;ll probably run in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city>. If she draws a crappy post in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city>, and a good post in the Oaks, she&#8217;ll probably run in the Oaks. I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s a 50-50 chance. I do know Mr. Porter wants to run in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city> if she draws a good post.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8220;Proud Spell, if she draws a really crappy post in the Oaks, we might cross-enter her in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city>. But I&#8217;d say that&#8217;s only 15-85.&#8221;</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">I&#8217;d like to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> in the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city>, although the obvious knock on her is that she has not faced colts before.<span style=""> </span>At least the defection of <span style="font-weight: bold;">War Pass</span> makes a spot available for someone else, and further dropouts could make more space for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of Cork</span>, who continues <a href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=44710">to train</a> toward the Derby despite his current low ranking on the graded earnings list; in my ideal world, a few more would exit the picture to ensure that he, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Truck</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> (who is <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080421/SPORTS/804210525">training</a> for the Derby, just in case) all get in the gate (which makes the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> dilemma all the more problematic).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Z Fortune</span> had slightly <a href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=44721">mysterious works</a> in thick fog on Monday; naturally, that did not serve to answer any questions about <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro&#8217;s</span> readiness after the Blue Grass debacle.<span style=""> </span><o:p></o:p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Adriano</span> has been <a href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=44703">hard at work</a> as well, but I still can&#8217;t get on his bandwagon, despite being a big fan of Graham Motion.<span style=""> </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> worked a bullet on Polytrack only to handle it poorly in a race (maybe?), so I&#8217;m not convinced a decent work over the Churchill Downs track can be given as much weight at a race over real dirt &#8212; and we know that didn&#8217;t work out well last time.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">Speaking of synthetics, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> continues to <a href="http://www.drf.com/news/article/93866.html">train at Santa Anita</a>; I&#8217;m curious to see how he takes to the Churchill Downs surface next weekend.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family:verdana;">Of course, I&#8217;ve only briefly touched on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Brown</span>; while his feet and lack of experience have been rehashed a number of times, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Times article about him and his connections is the structure of majority owner IEAH &#8212; they plan to<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/21/sports/othersports/21racing.html"> go public shortly</a>:<o:p></o:p></p>
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size:85%;">Since its inception in 2003, I.E.A.H. has raised more than $40 million from more than 80 investors and has formed partnerships to own various horses. The hedge fund model will supplant this arrangement; partners will own a part of all I.E.A.H. assets, from its 80 horses in training to its 15 broodmares and its future stallions, including the 2007 Breeders&#8217; Cup Mile champion, Kip Deville; Benny the Bull, winner of the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen; and Big Brown.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size:85%;">Each financial quarter, an independent auditor will assess the fund&#8217;s value, and investors will be able to decide to buy into the fund or sell their positions. &#8220;What we&#8217;re offering are liquidity and options that people in the horse business have never had before,&#8221; [IEAH president Michael] Iavarone said.</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-family:verdana;">Considering that the IEAH team has already won over </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.ieah.com/cgi-bin/stats_starts.cgi">$3 million dollars</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> this year (25% winners, 56% in the money), they must be doing something right.</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">I look forward to seeing what sort of investment levels they set over the next year.</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">Check back later for an updated Superfecta </span><st1:city style="font-family: verdana;" st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city><span style="font-family:verdana;"> Top Ten&#8230;</span></p>

<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">If the <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city> field stays anything like the current top 20, there&#8217;s going to be a big traffic jam at the 1/8th pole as certain horses hit their distance limitation wall.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">Here is the current top 20 in terms of <a href="http://horseracing.about.com/od/triplecrown2000/a/aakdearnings08.htm">graded earnings</a>:<o:p></o:p></p>

<li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Eight Belles</span> &#8211; <span style=""></span>Legit contender, numbers-wise<o:p></o:p></li>
</ul>
<p style="font-family: verdana;" class="MsoPlainText">On the bubble: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> (#29) is much more deserving of a Derby berth than most on this list &#8212; he&#8217;s already proven at the distance.<span style=""> </span>Here&#8217;s hoping he doesn&#8217;t run into any trouble in the Coolmore Lexington (or that the needed cash might magically appear in his account).<span style=""> </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span> (#22) should also be in the gate come <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Derby</st1:place></st1:city> day.<span style=""> </span>I don&#8217;t see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of Cork</span> (#25) being ready in time after the Illinois Derby debacle.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-family:verdana;">Given the opportunity, I would toss the following (some of whom are off the trail already) from the top 20: </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Z Humor</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Kodiak Kowboy</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Turf War</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Court Vision</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Adriano</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Salute the Sarge</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Cool Coal Man</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Anak Nakal</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">.  That makes plenty of space for legitimate contenders (and I would love to see talented horses like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Adriano</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><st1:place style="font-family: verdana;" st="on"><st1:city style="font-weight: bold;" st="on">Cowboy</st1:city><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span><st1:state st="on"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Cal</span></st1:state></st1:place><span style="font-family:verdana;"> on turf or otherwise in spots that make more sense for them). Warren, is a little too melodramatic (I didn&#8217;t really need the financial details on hotel rooms, for example) or a nice opportunity to see someone take some responsibility for a promising colt&#8217;s poor performance.</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span><span style="font-family: verdana;">In either instance, I hope we can look forward to seeing him well-prepared for good races later this summer.</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> One might also hope that it gives those experiencing last-minute Derby Fever (notably </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2008/April/08/Adriano-might-head-directly-to-Kentucky-Derby.aspx"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Adriano&#8217;s</span> connections</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">) some pause.</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> was working at Churchill Downs and still may or <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080409/SPORTS08/80409029">may not head</a> to the Coolmore Lexington (since the earnings question is still that); I can understand why trainer Dante Zanelli would rather go straight to the Derby if possible, but <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tomcito</span> obviously needed his last race &#8212; <span> </span>I think it would be no bad thing for him in the end if he does end up in the race at Keeneland.<span> </span>I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing more of him, hopefully in the Derby.</p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">The big story this weekend is the Blue Grass (or, more accurately, the Toyota Blue Grass, as we call these days).<span> </span>While <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pyro</span> (pictured) is <a href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2008/April/09/Pyro-set-for-final-Derby-test-in-Blue-Grass.aspx">the headliner</a> (and I expect a good race from him), <span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span> is the horse I&#8217;m most intrigued by.<span> </span>He seems to be improving each time out and it&#8217;s nice to see Jose Lezcano get a legitimate Derby horse. Most importantly, I give many props to Michael Matz for being entirely realistic about the horse&#8217;s chances &#8212; he&#8217;s not counting him out, nor is he anointing him the second coming of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Secretariat</span> (or <span style="font-weight: bold;">Barbaro</span>, <a href="http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080409/SPORTS08/804090960/1002/SPORTS">for that matter</a>):</p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;">
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size: 85%;">&#8220;What we&#8217;re really looking for is a race from where he can keep going in the same direction. It would certainly be nice to win (the Blue Grass). (But success would be) if he just has a race where he finishes well and that he can improve on that to go to the Derby.&#8221;</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size: 85%;">As the son of Grand Slam out of a French Deputy mare, Visionaire&#8217;s pedigree might suggest he&#8217;s cut out to be a miler rather than a Derby horse.</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size: 85%;">&#8220;But I think because his disposition is so good, he&#8217;s sort of outrunning his pedigree,&#8221; Matz said. &#8220;He has a very good late turn of foot, and the one thing you can&#8217;t judge is his heart. He&#8217;s a really nice horse, really competitive. Whether he&#8217;s good enough, I think there are just so many questions nobody can answer: How is your horse going to fare in a 20-horse field? How is your horse going to fare at a mile and a quarter? Not just for me, for everybody.&#8221;</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p class="MsoPlainText">
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">Given the flare-ups over <span style="font-weight: bold;">Denis of Cork</span> and War Pass this season, tempering predictions with a little reality is no bad thing (especially given his outside post position for the Blue Grass). I&#8217;d like to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Visionaire</span> do well since his connections have (actually) stayed classy.</p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="font-family: verdana;">Other entrants of note include Todd Pletcher&#8217;s <span style="font-weight: bold;">Monba</span> and Cowboy Cal who could make comebacks, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cool Coal Man</span> should not be ruled out.<span> </span>Barclay Tagg&#8217;s <span style="font-weight: bold;">Big Truck</span> is back too and has been <a href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=44493">working bullets</a> &#8211; he&#8217;s obviously ready for something.<span> </span> Regardless of the outcome, if any of the big names fail here, they can always blame the Polytrack &#8212; it worked <a href="http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=44514">for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span></a> last year.</p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bodoglife.com/horse-betting/"> Bet on the Kentucky Derby</a></p>
