Confused? Here’s what happened:

Some months ago, Bolger had declared that New Approach (last year’s 2-year-old champion and part of the larger Darley firmament) was not under consideration for the Epsom Derby and that the fact that he was still left in as a nominee on May 23rd was an administrative oversight. Up until five days out, he continued to suggest that the race was not on New Approach’s calendar, angering many who would have liked to wager on (or against) the colt in advance of the race.

On race day itself, Bolger made no claims of invincibility for his horse; indeed, New Approach’s rank behavior on the way to the post and early in the race was not dissimilar to what we in the US would see from Big Brown some hours later — albeit with quite a different outcome:

New Approach, a racy chesnut colt who is all quality, earned his rightful place on the Derby roll of honour under a ride that will long be recalled as one of the best executed around this trickiest of tracks. Kevin Manning’s superb horsemanship was an essential part of this great triumph.

In the uphill run through the first half-mile, nobody could have envisaged New Approach taking a hand in the finish. He was fighting for his head, proving a nightmare ride for Manning.

As if that wasn’t enough, New Approach found himself at the rear of the field, buffeted between horses, giving him little chance to relax and conserve energy. Manning said it was not until reaching the seven-furlong pole that New Approach dropped the bit, but suddenly his major concern became the simple matter of not setting the colt alight down Tattenham Hill.

With Ryan Moore launching Tartan Bearer, the Dante Stakes winner, down the outside, Manning had somehow weaved through to the inside rail, carving up Rio de La Plata, the mount of Frankie Dettori, in the process. In a thrilling battle to the line, New Approach’s superior class was the telling factor as he won a shade cleverly, by half a length, with Casual Conquest, the 7-2 favourite, 4½ lengths away in third.

There is still controversy swirling as to whether the facts are as Bolger states — that he simply changed his plans — or whether the race was the target all along. In any case, despite a great performance by the horse, the British and Irish press are still very much on the side of the punters at this juncture; it will be interesting to see if they come around before New Approach’s next start in the Irish Derby on June 29th.

Another horse I’ve been watching is Lookalike, a 3-year-old Dynaformer filly (out of a Mr. Prospector mare) trained by Michael Matz. She also won (and paid rather nicely too), but this time in rather more rarefied company; still an allowance race, to be sure, but this one was at Keeneland against other regally-bred fillies. The race was also notable for May Meeting unseating Edgar Prado at the start.

While these two races seem worlds apart, the two horses aren’t so widely separated in terms of background – Barbican was bred by Darley; he is by AP Indy out of a graded-stakes winning Mr. Prospector mare. Indeed, it must have seemed like a good breeding – he has a 3-year-old full sister, although she has yet to win a race. His elder half-brother, Equerry, is at stud in France after a successful European career – his first foals are 2-year-olds. Many of his other half-siblings are unraced or have rather less in the bank – while he’s not running at glamorous tracks anymore, he’s still earned nearly $100,000. Granted, it’s not much of a return on AP Indy’s stud fee, but it’s not certainly bad for a hard-knocking racehorse. His career path may be something of a preview for many of this year’s second-tier Derby hopefuls. After all, a Wikipedia entry doesn’t guarantee much.

Speaking of hard-knocking racehorses, my perennial favorite, Brass Hat (pictured), is back tomorrow for his 24th career start – he’s in the Fifth Third Elkhorn at Keeneland, facing the tough Stream of Gold. I’m looking forward to seeing him back on turf; it seems like a smart move at this point in his long career.

But Dalvina should not be ruled out despite the high weight and potential competition; she was a leading contender for the Cartier award for 3-year-old filly that went to the outstanding Peeping Fawn. The French-bred Green Girl is also one to watch if it’s wet; she’s a fan of soft turf.

If the going stays firm, we should see Revved Up in his final performance of the season in the McKnight and it seems there is every chance he’ll return to race again next year as a 10-year-old — although he’s often overlooked, Revved Up has won 13 stakes races over the past 7 years, on dirt and turf. Soldier’s Dancer is back for another crack at Revved Up as well — but again, any rain suggests that Revved Up will sit this one out.

In a rather complicated turn of events, Darley Japan has lost their license from the Japan Racing Association for the time being, although apparently this will not affect their breeding operations in that country where they stand such stallions as Admire Moon. The trouble is over the number of foreign owners allowed; Darley’s Japanese point person retired and that seems to have thrown things into confusion.

Finally, Toussaud has been pensioned due to laminitis; while I think some of her offspring were wildly over-rated (and were rumored to have inherited her peculiar brand of crazy), she’s definitely been a top producer; here’s hoping she is able to have a comfortable retirement.

It’s an interesting comparison to the sort of ‘I don’t know if he’s bred for the distance’ discussions we have in North America, except we tend to mean a rather shorter distance.
Back in the US, Fleet Indian failed to meet her reserve at Fasig-Tipton and so owner Paul Saylor bought her back. It seems that it’s officially back on between Darley and Coolmore as their latest bidding war set a new record for a broodmare as Playful Act sold for $10.5 million and there was a bit of a kerfuffle over Octave.

Valerie at Foolish Pleasure highlights some other interesting purchases, including the intriguing news that Lael Stables picked up Pussycat Doll and Valbenny and the fact that poor Tap Day only received a single $15,000 bid. But there are racing plans afoot too — Better Talk Now may be headed to Dubai for a shot at the Dubai Sheema Classic and he should be back in action at Calder in December. It seems that the Godolphin folks noticed that refusing to buy horses sired by Coolmore stallions was not a great move from a racing perspective, and so now that rule has quietly been dropped — and presumably bidding wars of the sort that led to The Green Monkey’s infamy are, at least for now, also a thing of the past. Perhaps in celebration of that fact, he’ll actually take to the track on Saturday, although it must be said that there is little precedent for this much press coverage about a six furlong maiden special weight.

You will also be aware that a filly named Rags to Riches is back in action this weekend in the Gazelle; even with her long layoff, she should easily beat Tough Tiz’s Sis and Lear’s Princess, but it should still be a nice workout. And there’s still the outside chance that, should everyone else be retired by the end of October, she could go in the Classic, although it is unlikely:

The Gazelle will be Rags to Riches’ prep for the Breeders’ Cup at Monmouth Park this October, where she’s pointed at the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Distaff. They hem and they haw, but one gets the feeling that they won’t start her in the Classic, against males, unless all of the good horses don’t show up.

“It would depend on how she ran in the Gazelle and who all shows up in the Classic,” said Pletcher.

Equine influenza continues to march across New South Wales and Queensland, although Victoria still remains flu-free at this point and no horses are allowed into the state from infected areas.

Among the stud farms now affected is Emirates Park (part of the Darley empire) — three yearlings, some mares as well as a teaser and a nursemare have all tested positive.

While there are good arguments for vaccination (see below), it seems clear that not everyone is following the strict biosecurity procedures that have been put in place — some Perth trainers were fined for disobeying the lockdown rules and moving their horses to a ‘private’ training area. One imagines that there are other similar infractions that have not been noted. Given the fact that seven shuttle stallions are confirmed to have the disease, it would seem worth pursuing whether or not the rules have been applied to to everyone equally.

But back to the vaccination issue; while horses who travel often are routinely vaccinated, the local horse population in Australia has never had a need to be similarly protected, since until two weeks ago, it shared the distinction of being entirely free of the virus with only New Zealand and Iceland. Indeed, diseases such as EI are the major reason that Iceland never allows horses to return once they have left the country, nor can you import horse equipment unless it is new in its original packaging or has gone through a ‘dip’ — the last time I went to Iceland during the British Foot & Mouth outbreak, I was required to have my boots dipped into before wearing them to any horse farms, and with good reason. At work we have a well-developed set of biosecurity protocols, but if you gave an anonymous survey, everyone could point to several occasions where they have not been followed, and there are initiatives in place to ensure that the importance of adhering to those protocols is understood at every level. The arguments for and against vaccination are summed up by two opinions:

“As they [officials] procrastinate on whether to vaccinate or not … they’re risking our industry and the long-term viability of our industry,” Mr O’Shea [Randwick trainer John O'Shea] said. “The rest of the world deals with it (EI) through vaccination so why should we be any different.”

Vets disagree. “You can vaccinate to try to make sure they don’t get it but you can see at Eastern Creek they have been vaccinated and they have it,” says NSW chief veterinarian Dr Bruce Christie. “The strains change all the time.” He advocates containment, and letting it burn itself out – like a bushfire.

There are no easy answers.

In addition to the elderly horse who died last week, EI has claimed its first racehorse victim — a previously healthy horse who had just won a race in late July.

I was also pleased that I’d picked Shakis to win the Bernard Baruch and was a little surprised to see he returned as much as he did.

Despite somewhat low expectations for Travers weekend this year, I admit that Hard Spun and Street Sense both put in great efforts that were well worth watching. My cynicism was not entirely dispelled, though as I reflected that we will likely never get to see either horse really display their full potential — I would still love to see Hard Spun race on grass or consistently in dirt miles, and of course I’d like to see Street Sense in a real rivalry with his peers, not a one-off swan song at the Breeders’ Cup.

Street Sense did run an exciting race in the Travers; he may not have looked quite as beaten as Hard Spun did a few times, but Grasshopper certainly made him work for the win. One does hope that Grasshopper’s late emergence onto the scene means that we will see a lot more of him next year, since the prospect of continuous Street Sense/Curlin/Rags to Riches/Hard Spun face-offs at four will never happen — after all, someone’s got to get to work as a stud to make up for all the money that Darley and Coolmore are currently losing in Australia with everyone (Elusive Quality, Bernardini, Holy Roman Emperor et al.) in quarantine. Of course, there’s always the possibility that The Green Monkey will blow away everyone in some allowance race at Belmont this fall that indicates he is a true champion who must be retired at once to preserve his bloodline — would that let someone else off the hook?

Effects of the equine influenza outbreak in Australia are spreading further as more drastic measures are required to contain the disease:

The cost of the shutdown is already in the tens of millions of dollars with the cancellation of race meetings in all states, with the Northern Territory the only place to hold racing today.

The spring carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne could be in doubt if racing does not resume within a few days and next year’s foal crop will be severely diminished with some of the world’s most valuable stallions in lockdown at Sydney’s Eastern Creek quarantine station and Spotswood in Melbourne.

Additionally, New Zealand has banned the importation of Australian horses for the time being and there are suggestions that the Melbourne Cup may need to be postponed for at least a month, although a three-day racing shutdown is all that is on the table at this point.

What is encouraging, however, is that so far things are proceeding in accordance with a specifically-outlined emergency plan — one that ran a successful drill in 2005. But should things get worse despite those measures, a theoretical financial breakdown is available here.

It’s getting a little coverage in the trade publications in the US, but the outbreak of equine influenza in Australia is already having a major effect on the sport Down Under. Perhaps uniquely, it is affecting both racing and breeding:

Racing officials announced early today that horses from the Centennial Park stables had returned positive tests to the highly contagious disease. This came within days of 52 horses being locked down at the Eastern Creek quarantine centre.

Most of those impounded at Eastern Creek are thoroughbred stallions worth about $500 million. They were due to begin serving some of the 30,000 mares registered in Australia when the breeding season starts on September 1.

The problems began when an ‘unnamed shuttle stallion’ tested positive for the disease earlier in the week:

THE multimillion-dollar Australian thoroughbred breeding industry was last night thrown into chaos with confirmation that a shuttle stallion has become the first horse in this country to test positive to the highly contagious virus equine influenza.

The unnamed stallion is one of 52 horses quarantined at Eastern Creek, west of Sydney.

…

Coolmore Australia’s general manager, Michael Kirwan, said last night that he had not been notified which stallion had contracted the virus. But, he said, Encosta De Lago had been vaccinated for equine influenza.

“None of our nine stallions at Eastern Creek are under medication,” he said. “I know from my last report that all our horses are healthy and have normal temperatures.”

Encosta De Lago is scheduled to have a meeting with Makybe Diva in the near future, so his quarantine is a major story to the casual fan as well as the confirmed railbird — so perhaps it is not unusual that his name is the one that seems to pop up in each news story:

The federal Agricultural Minister, Peter McGauran, said the suspected diagnosis of equine flu in a quarantined stallion was the biggest risk ever faced by the thoroughbred industry.

“A number of these stallions are between $100,000 and $200,000 per serve, so you can quickly do the arithmetic and see that millions of dollars are being lost. [But] it would be infinitesimal compared to the long-term effects if [the flu] was to escape into the wider horse population.”

The stallion at the centre of the scare is believed to be Encosta De Lago, which is quarantined at Eastern Creek.

And also from the Sydney Morning Herald:

Asked for a value on the stallions in lockdown, Bester replied: “How long is a piece of string? You can pluck a figure out of the air,” while also unwilling to reveal if Encosta De Lago was one of the three horses that became sick. “There is a lot of speculation, and I don’t want to repeat the rumours,” he said.

Not that anyone needed help on the rumor end of things:

In a statement issued by the office of Peter McGauran, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, testing of one horse at Eastern Creek showed “clinical signs consistent with EI and blood tests indicate a strong suspicion of a recently acquired infection”.

On Sydney radio station 2KY yesterday, McGauran indicated the suspect stallion had been infected by another stallion that had been shipped in from Japan.

“I’m afraid one of Australia’s best-known stallions has all the clinical signs of EI and the vets think it is almost certain it is EI so we’ve locked the door and shut the gate,” McGauran said.

“He (the stallion) serves five mares a day at around a fee of $200,000. He will be out of service for several weeks and it’s a heavy loss.

“But it’s not that stallion’s fault. It’s another stallion that’s been to Japan and although that horse is not showing the same coughing and high temperature, it’s probably the transmitter.”

It seems Coolmore and Darley have been equally hard-hit:

McGauran said up to 25 shuttle stallions were in quarantine facilities. Among those affected are nine of Coolmore Stud’s stallion roster including Encosta De Lago, as well as Rock Of Gibraltar, Choisir, Danehill Dancer and newcomer Holy Roman Emperor.

Sheik Mohammed’s Darley Stud has been hard hit with 17 of its team quarantined, including Elusive Quality and Exceed And Excel.

On the racing end, it seems likely that some individual racing days may be canceled over the next few days or weeks, but that the Melbourne Cup will not be affected — yet. However, the worst case scenario could look something like this:

“In most cases, it is not life-threatening,” he said. “[But] the illness is such it would stop a horse racing for a month or so.”

But there is a much greater fear. Suann recalled an outbreak in South Africa a couple of years ago. “It, like Australia, had never had an outbreak but when it arrived it spread through the population and basically shut down racing for a prolonged period,” he said.

Given the international angle to this story, US racing fans should be concerned not just about the breeding end of things (although I’m not sure who, beyond the accountants for Coolmore and Darley, is convinced that stallions need to serve so many mares in both hemispheres — I see this as bad from an immediate health perspective as well as an object lesson in how to create a genetic bottleneck), but in terms of the upcoming Breeders’ Cup as well; just one chance infection from a horse flying in from abroad could jeopardize the event. Yes, that’s why we have quarantines, but obviously, as in this instance, that’s not always enough.

Edit: A few more quarantined stallions are named here: Encosta de Lago, Rock of Gibraltar, Elusive Quality, Exceed and Excel, Danehill Dancer, Choisir, Holy Roman Emperor, Aussie Rules, Bernadini, Librettist, Country Reel, Snitzel and Black Hawk.
