<p>There was no luck for Wesley Ward this time in <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,314716,00.html">the Norfolk Stakes</a> &#8211; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yogaroo </span>slammed into the favorite <span style="font-weight: bold;">Monsieur Chevalier</span> (who was going for his fifth win in a row), basically taking him out of the race; music fans will be excited to see that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Radiohead</span> came home first (although he got caught up in the traffic trouble as well and really had to be taken up before shooting to the lead) and clearly wanted to go on even further. It was a thoroughly professional performance from the winner (especially for a 2-year-old), if not the rest of the field. Weirdly, the horse does remind me of Thom Yorke from certain angles.</p>
<p>The fillies were in action in <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,306426,00.html">the Ribblesdale Stakes</a>; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Flying Cloud</span> finally won one for Team Godolphin and Frankie Dettori. She seemed much the best, and the race was happily devoid of the sort of drama the juvenile boys experienced.</p>
<p>Then of course, came the 2 1/2 mile <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,306050,00.html">Gold Cup</a>; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats</span> looked bright, lively and intelligent while waiting to load &#8211; he&#8217;s obviously a horse with a ton of personality. Once he made his move to the front, he was not going to be passed as he headed home to make history. As they walked to the winner&#8217;s circle,<span style="font-weight: bold;"> Yeats</span> and Johnny Murtagh were embraced by various members of the Ballydoyle team. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats</span> clearly enjoyed a victory trot for the crowd &#8211; ears pricked, neck arched, just oozing triumph. The class with which he turned away <span style="font-weight: bold;">Patkai</span> at the end was the sort of thing one rarely sees in racing. Poor <span style="font-weight: bold;">Geordieland</span>, who played <span style="font-weight: bold;">Alydar</span> to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats&#8217;</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Affirmed</span> in their two previous Gold Cups, finished a good 15 lengths back in third.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats</span> made a <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/racing/yeats-rewrites-gold-cup-history-1708695.html">second bit of history</a> with his win today &#8211; he&#8217;s the oldest horse to win in the modern era. It&#8217;s rare enough to see a horse running at his level at 7 (when he equalled <span style="font-weight: bold;">Drum Taps&#8217;</span> &#8216;old age&#8217; record last year &#8211; prior to those two, a 7-year-old had not won since 1929) &#8211; but 8 is even more impressive. There is some suggestion that he could be back to try again for an unprecedented fifth win next year, although you may recall that last year when we <a href="http://superfectablog.blogspot.com/2008/06/horses-americans-should-know-iv-yeats.html">profiled him</a> that there was talk of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats</span> heading off to stud after his record-equalling victory &#8211; I imagine we should consider ourselves fortunate enough see him back at eight.</p>
<p>After the race, owner John Magnier said:<br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8216;We&#8217;re lucky, for once, we didn&#8217;t put him off to stud when he was three or four &#8211; it&#8217;s really great the way it&#8217;s all worked out.&#8217; </span></p></blockquote>
<p>Indeed.</p>
<p>When asked if we&#8217;ll see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats</span> later this season, he replied:<br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8216;Why would you stop with a horse that&#8217;s enjoying himself like that?&#8217; &#8216;People enjoying seeing him, and he enjoys racing, and we enjoy going racing with him, so what would the point be in not going to somewhere like Goodwood?&#8217;</span></p></blockquote>
<p>Of course, the stud career cannot be too far off at this point &#8211; he continued:<br />
<blockquote><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8216;The genes are there&#8230;not everybody wants to use a Gold Cup winner, but you need stamina in the stud as well.&#8217;</span></p></blockquote>
<p>Quite so. Perhaps now, more than ever?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be on the go the next several days and not likely able to check in on the rest of Royal Ascot, although I will be catching up and am especially looking forward to the return of the sprinters in <a href="http://horses.sportinglife.com/Racecards/0,12495,306341,00.html">the Golden Jubilee</a> on Saturday.</p>
<p>Have a great weekend!</p>

<p>Val has a <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://foolishpleasure-valerie.blogspot.com/2008/11/foolish-pleasure-descendent-viewed-wins.html">great wrap-up</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> (and video of the race) here; we both found it rather peculiar that the three </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24604106-5006021,00.html">Ballydoyle horses</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> finished 18th (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Septimus</span>), 20th (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Alessandro Volta</span>) and 21st out of the 22 horse field (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Honolulu</span>). Indeed, the only reason Honolulu didn&#8217;t finish officially last is because <span style="font-weight: bold;">Gallopin</span> was pulled up with what sounds like a flipped palate. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Septimus</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Honolulu</span> were both discovered to be </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24604054-5006021,00.html">lame</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> after the race and it was suggested that the lack of a prep race prior to the big day may have contributed to their difficulties. Adding to the low feelings in the Irish camp was some (more) </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/horseracing/lordans-cup-tactics-given-benefit-of-the-doubt/2008/11/04/1225560840472.html">questioning</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> from the stewards over the Ballydoyle jockeys&#8217; tactics, but in the end they seemed satisfied that nothing untoward took place. Aidan O&#8217;Brien seemed to consider the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.racingandsports.com.au/racing/rsNewsArt.asp?NID=138883&amp;story=Cup_Tactics_A_Bad_Irish_Joke">hard turf</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> the cause of both the poor performances and subsequent lameness &#8212; obviously, it&#8217;s </span><span style="font-style: italic; font-family: verdana;">always</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> the surface &#8212; but he&#8217;ll still be back for another try next year.</span></p>
<p>And now back to the winner, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Viewed</span>, who held off English rival <span style="font-weight: bold;">Bauer</span> by the <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/horseracing/rivals-praise-cummings-after-melbourne-cup-win/2008/11/04/1225560829101.html">slimmest</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> of margins: he won as quite the outsider and paid a handsome $186 to win. It was a good day for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/horse-racing/viewed-to-a-killing-for-bookies-as-longshot-salutes/2008/11/04/1225560843457.html">the bookies</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">:</span></p>

The main rails bookies paid out about $1.5million so it (Viewed) was a great result for them,&#8221; Eddelbuttel said.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Ouch. </span></p>
<p>While Bart Cummings is an <a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24604426-2702,00.html">old hand</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> at this (literally, as he turns 81 later this month), this is 21-year-old jockey </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/horse-racing/stable-life-has-shinn-settled-in-the-saddle/2008/11/04/1225560843442.html">Blake Shinn&#8217;s</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> first win in the historic race. Few will have their minds on work as they wait for the final result &#8212; years of preparation and anticipation have been spent building toward this moment. And we all know what&#8217;s at stake: bragging rights as a Melbourne Cup victor.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>American race fans may be slightly distracted by the <a href="http://wonkette.com/">local races</a> taking place tomorrow, but the first Tuesday in November has long been known as &#8216;the race that </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.melbournecup.com/Melbourne-Cup-Carnival-2.html">stops a nation</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">&#8216; in Australia. And not unlike this year&#8217;s Breeders&#8217; Cup, there is a particularly large </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601081&amp;sid=at9P6aneyYag&amp;refer=australia">European contingent</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the field for the 148th Melbourne Cup. Indeed, with last year&#8217;s winner <span style="font-weight: bold;">Efficient</span> out of the field, most of the wagers have been placed on the foreign invaders and local trainers seem practically </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horseracing/3371662/Melbourne-Cup-Chapple-Hyam-dream-shattered-as-Yellowstone-is-scratched-Horse-Racing.html">resigned to losing</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Newspapers here in Australia are tipping total European domination in their most famous race. Bart Cummings, the legendary trainer, who has won 11 Cups (and saddles Viewed and Moatize) moaned: &#8220;There are so many foreign runners, it&#8217;ll be a case of spot the Aussie!&#8221;<br /></span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Luca Cumani brings <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mad Rush</span>, the current favorite, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/11/03/2408481.htm?section=sport">from England</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, while Aidan O&#8217;Brien brings his usual handful of horses (pictured), led by </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24598306-5006021,00.html"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Septimus</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Honolulu</span></a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. Dermot Weld also has a strong Irish contender in </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24597443-2722,00.html">Profound Beauty</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. The closest thing to a local favorite is New Zealand&#8217;s </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.stuff.co.nz/4748445a17395.html">Nom Du Jeu</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> who has been hovering around fourth in the betting thus far.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>The recent European kerfuffle over Ballydoyle&#8217;s team tactics meant that the jockeys for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Septimus</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Honolulu</span> and likely rabbit <span style="font-weight: bold;">Alessandro Volta</span> were called in for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24598306-5006021,00.html">a little chat</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> to ensure that nothing similar happens in the Melbourne Cup. The Herald-Sun noted that although there were the usual worries that the ground might not suit <span style="font-weight: bold;">Septimus</span>, O&#8217;Brien himself was wearing </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/horseracing/the-cups-running-to-ireland-time/2008/11/03/1225560739450.html">a <span style="font-weight: bold;">Honolulu</span> jacket</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8212; so placing a bet on each one might be a worthwhile investment. In any instance, the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/horse-racing/team-obrien-keeps-prospects-in-the-family/2008/11/03/1225560738648.html">whole O&#8217;Brien family</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has come to Australia this year, so they must be expecting something good.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Americans may be interested to know that although <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mad Rush</span> is based in Europe, he is Kentucky-bred and </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbrednews.co.nz/spring-racing/default.aspx?id=37469">owned by Earle Mack</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, whose name adorns the law school building next to my office. Make of that what you will, but <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mad Rush</span> certainly does have an interesting pedigree for an American-bred horse. He&#8217;s by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lemon Drop Kid</span>, out of an Irish-bred <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sadler&#8217;s Wells</span> mare, so it&#8217;s pretty clear why he was sent to Europe. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Profound Beauty</span> is looking to become the third Melbourne Cup winner </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/horseracing/weld-on-the-cusp-of-a-profound-moment-or-two/2008/11/03/1225560739417.html">for Dermot Weld</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, who became the first European trainer to win the race with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Vintage Crop</span> in 1993 (and won again with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Media Puzzle</span> in 2002). </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/nrl/story/0,27074,24598781-11088,00.html">The bookies believe</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Danehill</span> mare is a better horse than <span style="font-weight: bold;">Media Puzzle</span> was and that she has a strong chance to win.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Nom Du Jeu&#8217;s</span> trainer, Murray Baker, knows his horse has the right qualities, but he will need a bit of luck if he&#8217;s to </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.stuff.co.nz/4748445a17395.html">cross the line first</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8220;It&#8217;s a race which has changed in recent years because you need an absolutely top-class horse. Whereas in the old days you could win it with the right type of handicapper down the bottom of the weights, with the top European horses coming down, you need a top-class horse to win it.</p>
<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s as close as I&#8217;ll get. He&#8217;s a Derby winner out of a two-miler winner by a champion European sire in Montjeu. He can certainly stay but we&#8217;ll need a lot of luck. If you think you&#8217;ve got a horse, you just take your chance.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">In a 22 horse field (it was 24, but there have been two scratches), everyone will need a little bit of luck &#8211; here&#8217;s hoping for a great race!</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Final note to Americans: please remember to </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.rockthevote.com/">go vote</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">!</span></p>

With eight wins from </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.racingpost.co.uk/horses/racing_horse_form.sd?horse_id=670119">eleven starts</a><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >, the son of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Galileo</span> heads off into the sunset to become a Darley stallion. So why the rush? In this case, it&#8217;s (still) all about the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4973830.ece">rivalry with Coolmore</a><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" ><span style="font-size:85%;">On past form, New Approach would surely have transferred to Godolphin for a four-year-old career. But the pendulum within Sheikh Mohammed&#8217;s global empire is swinging the other way. Godolphin retains its primacy but the sheikh&#8217;s boycott of Coolmore sires, now in its third year, makes it imperative that his own stallion tribe delivers him runners of the highest class.</p>
<p>John Ferguson, managing director of Darley, the sheikh&#8217;s global bloodstock conglomerate, is orchestrating the drive. &#8220;In the case of New Approach, &#8221; Ferguson said, &#8220;you have a champion two-year-old by one of the great sires [Galileo] who has won the Derby, the Irish Champion Stakes and now the Champion Stakes. He is an outstanding athlete.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >So, once again, rather than develop that rivalry on the track, it will take place behind closed doors (for a few years, at least) while <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span> racks up stud fees. He&#8217;s likely not the last one for the year, either &#8212; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raven&#8217;s Pass</span> is also </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4973830.ece">rumored</a><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" > to be next to the shed after the Breeders&#8217; Cup (which makes the event rather too well named).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:verdana;" >And as for the only horse to beat <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span> (three times) &#8212; well, there&#8217;s no word yet on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator&#8217;s</span> plans for next year. Next weekend may provide some direction, but one hopes at least one of this year&#8217;s stars bucks this ugly trend.</span></p>

I&#8217;m interested to see </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >King of Rome</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> down for the Dirt Marathon (along with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, although the Classic is still his first choice) rather than the Turf; given what looks like a talent shortage in the Marathon, it may be an easy spot for him. What is actually quite intriguing is that none of the Ballydoyle stars are cross-entered &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> are both entered in the Classic and only the Classic, and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Soldier of Fortune</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is set for the Turf. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Plenty of American horses are taking advantage of cross-entries, however (until they are forced to choose next Tuesday). </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Awesome Gem</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> seems overmatched in either the Classic or the Mile, but at least there&#8217;s an option; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has the Filly &amp; Mare Sprint as her first choice, with the Sprint as a backup plan. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Lewis Michael</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will choose between the Dirt Mile and the Sprint, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Precious Kitten</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> between the Filly &amp; Mare Turf and the Mile and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Pyro</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> could contest the Classic or the Dirt Mile (which seems a better spot for him at this point). The connections of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Slew&#8217;s Tizzy</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ventura</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Well Armed</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> all have decisions to make as well.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Among other slightly surprising entries are </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Champs Elysees</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Classic (while Bobby Frankel had suggested he might enter him, I imagined he would be cross-entered in something else too), which seems to be coming up tougher than the Turf and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >US Ranger</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Mile. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Diabolical</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is set to resurface in the Turf Sprint; it&#8217;s been a while since we&#8217;ve seen him.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>But there is one old reliable we can look forward to &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Better Talk Now</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is back for his </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2008/October/13/Better-Talk-Now-on-target-for-fifth-BC-Turf-start.aspx">fifth shot</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the Turf. Given that everyone seems to be gravitating toward the Classic this year, why not give it another go?</span></p>

<p>Perhaps the most competitive race this weekend will be the Beldame; while </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.ntra.com/blog.aspx?blogid=17&amp;year=2008&amp;month=9&amp;day=26">Ginger Punch</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> towers over the field, it&#8217;s </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=3609729">no walkover</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8212; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Unbridled Belle</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lemon Drop Mom</span> are both in the mix (and let&#8217;s recall how close it was the last time <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ginger Punch</span> faced <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lemon Drop Mom</span>), but I am particularly intrigued by </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.pedigreequery.com/cocoa+beach4">Cocoa Beach</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Leah&#8217;s Secret</span>. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cocoa Beach</span> was 3-year-old champion filly in Chile last year and she has been facing tough (and occasionally male) competition in Dubai and elsewhere. Godolphin may not be much of a powerhouse compared to Ballydoyle this year, but if they do have a horse to watch this year, she may be it. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Leah&#8217;s Secret</span> has always been on the bubble with the top-flight mares; nonetheless, I&#8217;m keeping an eye on her.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Nor is <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> the only Horse of the Year contender running this weekend; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span> is also </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3609679">stepping up</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> to the plate. While her participation in the Filly &amp; Mare Classic (</span><i style="font-family: verdana;">née</i><span style="font-family:verdana;"> Distaff) seems a foregone conclusion (even though I would rather see her in the &#8216;Classic&#8217; Classic, depending on which Euros ship over), it would be nice if she can keep her </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/47218/zenyatta-looks-to-stay-perfect">unbeaten streak</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> alive in this weekend&#8217;s Lady&#8217;s Secret at Santa Anita. The obvious trifecta would seem to be <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span>-<span style="font-weight: bold;">Hystericalady</span>-<span style="font-weight: bold;">Santa Teresita</span>, but you never know. Nevertheless, it would have been more interesting to see her race played up as a west coast counterpart to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin&#8217;s</span> Belmont star turn.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Back at Belmont, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Wait a While</span> is back for another shot at the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3609737">Yellow Ribbon</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. How many former 3-year-old champions are still in training at 5 these days? That&#8217;s only one great reason to watch her race &#8212; if you happen to get TVG.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"></p>
<p>Zenyatta</span> is not the only star at Santa Anita either; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Boss</span> is the favorite in the Ancient Title, and it seems this is a &#8216;</span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3609734">last chance to see</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">&#8216; before the Breeders&#8217; Cup and retirement &#8212; he&#8217;s off to become a Darley stallion. (Apparently it was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.darleyamerica.com/Stallions/Our-Stallions">not enough</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> to own both <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Cry</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Street Sense</span>). While he&#8217;s made his mark as a sprinter, I would prefer to see him in the Classic come Breeders&#8217; Cup time &#8212; although given that it&#8217;s his final race, it hardly seems to matter.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Before we (finally) get to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span>, it seems the European press has latched on to Jerry Bailey&#8217;s comments regarding whether <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> would </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5iLMGhf5ZrrZoM078fL2VlbZy-t_A">stay</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> the Classic distance, or whether he&#8217;s more suited to the Mile (indeed, it is his only proven distance). He&#8217;s being considered for both races, but things will likely become clearer after he meets <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tamayuz</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raven&#8217;s Pass</span> on Saturday in the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.ie/sport/horse-racing/henry-on-track-for-tamayuz-showdown-1482600.html">Queen Elizabeth II Stakes</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at Ascot. His stablemate, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span>, is apparently still possible for the Classic, but he is </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5hPyZXS0N6_NuHwFA0LVUEZd9Wssw">out of</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> the Breeders&#8217; Cup prep race at Great Leighs. Whether he takes on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zarkava</span> in the Arc or heads to California (or both) is still up in the air. In any event, Ballydoyle will have to leave their </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2008/0926/1222374595518.html">team tactics</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at home.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>There is still more action stateside this weekend, but as it&#8217;s been a crazy week at work, we&#8217;ll have to move swiftly on to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horseracing/bal-faceoff926,0,1913377.column">Baltimore Sun</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has articles in favor of and against wanting to see him break native son <span style="font-weight: bold;">Cigar&#8217;s</span> all-time </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/scorecard/othernews.asp?articleID=240762">earnings record</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> Saturday (which you can watch live on <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3606771">ESPNEWS</a>). Beyond the race, however, there is still the legal sideshow going on over his minority owners. The latest move to sell their interest by sealed bid merited this response from Jess Jackson&#8217;s </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/47251.htm?id=47251">attorney</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">A decision to retire the 4-year-old son of Smart Strike may hinge on the outcome of the sealed-bid process, according to courtroom discussion.</p>
<p>&#8220;My clients, as the 80% owners, are being infringed upon because of problems with ongoing litigation,&#8221; Richard Getty, an attorney representing Stonestreet Stables, argued before Crittenden. &#8220;My client has already been harmed by not already divesting this interest. The large farms are not interested.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Mr. Jackson is saying we may race the horse next year, because we are forced to,&#8221; Getty said, terming Midnight Cry Stable&#8217;s ongoing presence as an &#8220;albatross&#8221; at one point. &#8220;We would love to be rid of this interest.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">One presumes this will not be the position presented to the public on Saturday &#8212; but I digress.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>While some are complaining there isn&#8217;t much competition for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> in the race, I am looking forward to seeing more steady improvement from <span style="font-weight: bold;">Mambo in Seattle</span>; I don&#8217;t expect him to win (for we know <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> doesn&#8217;t mind the slop, judging from last year&#8217;s Classic victory), but he may make <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> work for it. If <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> does indeed go to the Classic, such a challenge should keep him tuned up for the big day. If you are going, you may need to use your </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.nyra.com/belmont/stories/JCGC_0927.shtml">commemorative t-shirt</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> as an umbrella&#8230;</span></p>

The main difference in the narratives is that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> was beaten by one of the most well-regarded milers around, </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4698205.ece">Goldikova</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, who is now pointing toward the Breeders&#8217; Cup Mile, while <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kip Deville</span> was bested by little-known (outside Ontario) Canadian gelding </span><a style="font-family: verdana; font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=776056">Rahy&#8217;s Attorney</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. Perhaps there&#8217;s new feed at the Dutrow barn, who can say? The other question coming out of the race is whether <span style="font-weight: bold;">Rahy&#8217;s Attorney</span> will use his Win and You&#8217;re In berth for the Breeders&#8217; Cup &#8212; as he&#8217;s </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&amp;ct=us/1-0&amp;fp=48c5d377a20ed57e&amp;ei=iE_FSO6eLJLgyQTj893JAw&amp;url=http%3A//www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080908.WOODBINE08/TPStory/Sports&amp;cid=1243503189&amp;sig2=2M0J6l6TMe__8UJSmQZWuA&amp;usg=AFQjCNGK-TJL-_Y4gYynpuHtMlwBx3wj7A">not nominated</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, it would still cost his connections a rather large sum of money to get him to the starting gate. Kentucky-bred but well-traveled mare <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ventura</span> also put in a notable effort to finish second.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>It was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/racing/article4698205.ece">not a great weekend</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for Aiden O&#8217;Brien; beyond <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator&#8217;s</span> defeat at Longchamp, he scratched <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span> from the Irish Champion Stakes (easily won by rival <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span>) and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Halfway to Heaven</span> was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.rte.ie/sport/racing/2008/0907/lushlashes.html">soundly defeated</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lush Lashes</span> (like <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span>, she is trained by Jim Bolger) in the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes &#8212; so he&#8217;s still a few Group 1 wins away from the record.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>The main feature of the Prix du Moulin was the rivalry between <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Darjina</span>, with both classy fillies putting in fine efforts. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span> has some options for the Breeders&#8217; Cup, according to her trainer, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.rte.ie/sport/racing/2008/0907/moulin.html">Freddie Head</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><span style="font-family: verdana;font-size:85%;" ><br /></span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8216;I knew she was well and ready to run a big race. She was against the colts for the first time and I wasn&#8217;t certain she could win but I was certain of her well-being and quality.</p>
<p>&#8216;She will definitely go the Breeders&#8217; Cup now, but I will discuss the options with the owner. She could go for the Mile or the Filly and Mare Turf &#8211; I don&#8217;t think stamina would be a problem for the latter as she proved she stayed when third in the Diane.&#8217;</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">There&#8217;s another reason to head to California &#8212; that way she avoids another matchup with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zarkava</span>, who has already beaten her twice. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zarkava</span> is still aiming for the Arc and had an </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5g8x4H-TZrQ2nQH0vJjFzFNuk_x9w">encouraging workout</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> recently. There is some thought that <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> will aim for the Breeders&#8217; Cup Mile (instead of the Classic, as had been suggested earlier), while <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span> </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/racing/approach-maintains-course-as-navigator-loses-way-922516.html">may try</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for the Classic. Here&#8217;s hoping <span style="font-weight: bold;">Darjina</span> heads stateside as well &#8211; it would be great to see her renew her rivalry with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span> in a time zone I can stay awake for (just).</span></p>

While it seems the results of the race would not be affected, there would be some financial implications for trainer Aiden O&#8217;Brien (pictured) and </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/sep/03/horseracing">jockey Colm O&#8217;Donoghue</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">If O&#8217;Donoghue is found in breach, however, O&#8217;Brien will be deemed to be in breach unless he can satisfy the BHA&#8217;s disciplinary panel that he instructed his jockey to treat every other horse in the race without favour. If found guilty, O&#8217;Donoghue faces a riding ban of up to 10 days, while O&#8217;Brien could be fined up to £10,000. In any event, the result of the race will not be altered.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Let&#8217;s review what Johnny Murtagah, who was aboard <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span>, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/sep/03/horseracing">said post-race</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><span style="font-size:85%;"> </span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8220;I was always going to follow Colm,&#8221; Murtagh reportedly told the Sunday Times. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t want to start worrying about other horses. I just wanted to worry about myself and Colm and I said to him, &#8216;When you get to the four marker, just ease off and give me the passage through&#8217;. It&#8217;s what Ballydoyle&#8217;s all about.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">The inquiry will begin September 22nd, but there&#8217;s plenty to keep the press percolating over in the meantime &#8212; <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span> had been set to line up for his sixth Group 1 of the year in the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday, but rain and resulting soft ground could </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/sep/04/horseracing">prevent a rematch</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> against <span style="font-weight: bold;">New Approach</span> (who was third in their last meeting). </p>
<p>But the ground may not be the only concern &#8212; O&#8217;Brien had earlier suggested that the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke</span> might still be </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/sep/04/horseracing">a bit tired</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> after his previous controversial effort, and that combined with the forecast for rain meant that rumors of his non-appearance have been swirling to the point that betting was suspended in some corners. We&#8217;ll see&#8230;in any event, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Red Rock Canyon</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">King of Rome</span> (whom I can only assume is named for the famous <a href="http://www.derbyphotos.co.uk/features/kingofrome/index.htm">racing pigeon</a> of <a href="http://www.thekingofrome.com/">folk song</a> fame) are both </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.setantasports.com/en/Sport/News/Other-sports/2008/09/04/Racing-Champion-Stakes-runners-/?facets/sport-space/great-britain-locale/horse-racing/">in the race</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> for Ballydoyle as well. Any one of them could give O&#8217;Brien Group 1 win number 19 for the season.</p>
<p></span><span style="font-family:verdana;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span> has a tough weekend assignment as well; he is scheduled to take on </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2008/0904/1220372097738.html">top fillies</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Darjina</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Natagora</span> in the Prix du Moulin (yet another Group 1) at Longchamp &#8211; although exactly who lines up will depend on </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5gpWXgZoN5LvXm4sg99tfGAg2P2WQ">the weather</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>And if <span style="font-weight: bold;">Yeats</span> does decide to go for the Melbourne Cup in November, he&#8217;ll have the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.setantasports.com/en/Sport/News/Other-sports/2008/09/03/Racing-Big-Melbourne-weights-for-OBrien-pair/?facets/sport-space/great-britain-locale/horse-racing/">highest weight</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the field to carry &#8211; he&#8217;s been assigned 59 kg (about 130 pounds), with last year&#8217;s winner, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Efficient</span>, being accorded 58 kg (about 128 pounds). Some entrants have been given as little as 53 kg (about 117 pounds), so if he does go ahead, he has no small task ahead of him. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">It&#8217;s going to be a busy time for Ballydoyle.</span></p>

But before we look ahead to the weekend, let&#8217;s examine the storm brewing across the pond over Ballydoyle&#8217;s alleged employment of </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/aug/26/horseracing1">team tactics</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">On the face of it, it would seem that the Aidan O&#8217;Brien-trained horses don&#8217;t need <span style="font-family: verdana;">to do much more beyond simply turning up – their most recent </span></span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/aug/24/horseracing">notable victory</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> over the past weekend saw</span> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> (pictured) collect his fifth Group 1 victory of the year, equaling the records of earlier Ballydoyle stars (and current Coolmore stallions) </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Rock of Gibraltar</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Giant&#8217;s Causeway</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Yet some are concerned there is more at work here than simply the best horse winning; a number of times over the past few years, Team Ballydoyle has been accused playing the game rather less than fairly. The British racing rules define the infraction </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/aug/26/horseracing1">as follows</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">:</span><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Rule 153 (iv) states that a rider shall not &#8220;make a manoeuvre in a race in the interests of another horse in common ownership or under common control or from the same stable or team, whether or not such a manoeuvre caused interference or caused his horse to fail to achieve its best possible placing&#8221;.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Of course, whether or not it&#8217;s the real thing (or whether the stewards catch it) is debatable; a charge of team tactics after a poor outcome for a Godolphin horse led to considerable bad feeling between Aidan O&#8217;Brien and jockey Frankie Dettori </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/general/racing-the-horse-nurturer-of-ballydoyle-417650.html">in 2006</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">:</span><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">O&#8217;Brien is less likely to hanker after Dettori, however, after his childish complaints about &#8220;team tactics&#8221; at Ascot on Saturday. The Italian goaded the stewards into a 14-day suspension for Seamus Heffernan, who rode another Ballydoyle colt in George Washington&#8217;s race.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-style: italic; font-family: verdana;">The Guardian</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> has been bringing the issue up all summer; first, taking the view that the multiple Ballydoyle entries in major races may lead to suspicion, even if there&#8217;s </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/jul/15/horseracing">nothing particularly nefarious afoot</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">:</span><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Pacemakers are good for top-class racing, particularly when it comes to preserving stamina in the breed. They help to ensure that 12-furlong races are won by proper 12-furlong horses.</p>
<p>But does anyone need three or four? O&#8217;Brien leaves nothing to chance, which is one reason why he has achieved so much. This, though, may be one of those times when you can have too much of a good thing.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Duke of Marmalade&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> International Stakes win brought the topic back up to the surface, with Lydia Hislop arguing that the use of team tactics was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/aug/26/horseracing1">precisely what was going on</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">:</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">So why was that rule not applied to the moment when Colm O&#8217;Donoghue, the rider on pace-setting Red Rock Canyon, eased away from the rail to leave a Duke Of Marmalade-sized hole up his inside? It was a gap Johnny Murtagh immediately asked that horse to fill, as the shortest route to a fifth consecutive Group One win.</p>
<p>O&#8217;Donoghue&#8217;s driving instructor may have watched the race with some satisfaction: it was copybook execution of Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre. Nearing the half-mile pole, he looked over his left shoulder. Clearly, for his purposes, it was safe to go but, like a careful driver, he also checked over his right once the manoeuvre was complete.</p>
<p>Had O&#8217;Brien and O&#8217;Donoghue been summoned to account by the stewards, they might have argued that Red Rock Canyon peeled off the rail due to hanging under pressure, rather than by the will of his jockey, who was looking around to try to avoid hampering others as his horse weakened.</p>
<p>…</p>
<p>Yet leaving an inquiry uncalled and allowing the reverberations to echo freely may turn out best &#8211; by chance &#8211; for the British Horseracing Authority. For Murtagh has since been quoted ascribing clear intent to O&#8217;Donoghue&#8217;s actions. &#8220;I was always going to follow Colm,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t want to start worrying about other horses. I just wanted to worry about myself and Colm and I said to him, &#8216;when you get to the four marker, just ease off and give me the passage through&#8217;. It&#8217;s what Ballydoyle&#8217;s all about.&#8221;</p>
<p>This provides the BHA with an opportunity to advise Team O&#8217;Brien that such tactics breach the rules of racing. Given that Saturday&#8217;s manoeuvre merely ceded an advantage to Duke Of Marmalade, rather than materially improving his finishing position &#8211; Phoenix Tower had every chance, once chiselled out of his Ballydoyle coffin &#8211; O&#8217;Brien can expect a private letter rather than a retrospective inquiry.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">So it sounds as though the matter will rumble on, fueled by equal parts jealousy and dodgy-looking finishes (and good luck proving what&#8217;s going on in either direction) – but it will be intriguing to see if </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> does indeed come to contest the Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic – and who else might be coupled with him.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">One of America&#8217;s most successful (and legit) rabbits, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Shake the Bank</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, is running in a race </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://foolishpleasure-valerie.blogspot.com/2008/08/weekend-reflections-and-rants.html">all by his lonesome</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> at Presque Isle on Thursday &#8211; here&#8217;s hoping he&#8217;s allowed to win, for once!</span></p>

<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/racing/murtagh-under-fire-after-unsporting-tactics-890162.html">The Independent</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, meanwhile, sees the result as coming out of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Archipenko&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> backstory as as Coolmore also-ran (before his switch of </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/racing/murtagh-under-fire-after-unsporting-tactics-890162.html">ownership and trainer</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">):</span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Regardless, De Kock strongly implied that he felt Murtagh&#8217;s priority had been to stop Archipenko. &#8220;He rode his horse to keep him in,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s different if you still have a chance, but he was beaten and still didn&#8217;t let Kevin out. There was no need to do that. That is the most ungentlemanly piece of riding I have seen in a long time. I know it&#8217;s not a game for gentlemen out there, but I&#8217;d say that was a pretty ordinary piece of sportsmanship. I know he&#8217;s King Johnny at the moment, but I&#8217;m a bit disappointed with what I saw.&#8221;</p>
<p>Shea insisted that he would have won if Murtagh had given him a break. &#8220;I had so much horse I should have never lost,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Johnny had me trapped the whole way round, and when it was time to go I begged him to let me go – and he wouldn&#8217;t. If he&#8217;d had half a chance to win the race, I would have said: &#8216;Fine&#8217;.&#8221; </span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Johnny Murtagh responded to </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-10-millionaug10,0,911717.story">the claims</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">:</span><span style="font-family: verdana;font-size:85%;" ><br /></span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Murtagh&#8217;s explanation: &#8220;I secured a pocket on the rail [running second] and I was where I wanted to be. At the half-mile pole, I thought we were going to get there. We just couldn&#8217;t get there.&#8221;</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Mount Nelson </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">certainly never seemed </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">disadvantaged as a result of any tactics employed</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">during the race (he was still very close for third), and we can all point to more egregious examples</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, so it sounds more like grumbling than anything else.<br /></span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />Archipenko</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> isn&#8217;t the only former Ballydoyle horse who was running at Arlington over the weekend &#8211; the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/racing/murtagh-under-fire-after-unsporting-tactics-890162.html">same article</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> notes that Secretariat runner-up </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Plan</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.ieah.com/cgi-bin/news_article.cgi?news_id=1001952">purchased</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> by IEAH and is off to Rick Dutrow&#8217;s barn. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Speaking of the Secretariat, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Winchester&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=3527420">victory</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> seemed to demonstrate just how far ahead the European turf 3-year-olds are at this point versus American stars like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Tizdejavu</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> (especially given where</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Winchester</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> sits in the European firmament right now &#8212; which is to say not terribly high); one wonders if he&#8217;ll stay Stateside as well, since Lasix seems to </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=3527420">agree with him</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. There is also the possibility that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Tizdejavu</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> just had a bad day or didn&#8217;t like the track, given his </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=3527420">lack of response</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> to urging from Garrett Gomez, but if we take the result at face value, there&#8217;s still a considerable talent gap.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>It was encouraging to hear that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Mauralakana&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> win in the Beverly D will add a few more months to her racing career; although the French-bred mare was already highly accomplished, with graded-stakes wins in France and the US, she seems to be finding her</span><span style="font-family: verdana;font-size:85%;" > best now <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/cs-10-million-bitsaug10,0,2404174.story">at age 5</a>:<br /></span><br />
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-size:85%;">&#8220;Some horses do get better from 4 to 5 (years of age), the same as they do from 3 to 4,&#8221; Clement said after Mauralakana&#8217;s fourth straight victory and her fifth in six starts this year.</span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">It seems her move to a stud farm in Australia will now be </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=226724&amp;src=131">delayed</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> until after the Breeders&#8217; Cup, so her victory also means we should continue to see exciting races in what is an increasingly deep division.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>But back to the boys for a moment; it&#8217;s a shame that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Einstein&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://racing.bloodhorse.com/article/46531.htm">stumble</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the start of the Million essentially took him out of the race, but I look forward to him taking on another field of this quality with better racing luck. But for now, the lesson seems to be to bet the Euros when they pay a visit (indeed, only </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Curlin</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Brown</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> even merit a mention in </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/46546.htm">Timeform&#8217;s top 20</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">); if only any resulting winnings could be paid out in Euros!</span></p>
