As we wait out the final pre-Derby weekend, I decided it was high time to explain just what I like – and dislike – about my top ten Derby picks. I Want Revenge While some may now overlook the Blue Grass as a Derby prep after Keeneland’s surface change, this year’s installment has drawn an interesting field. It will be the first US appearance for Mafaaz, and even with his guaranteed Derby berth, trainer John Gosden is looking for a solid performance from the colt: Last weekend’s Derby preps may, unfortunately, become more remembered for what happened off the track (and not even to horses pointed toward Kentucky) – all thanks to Jeff Mullins, conditioner for I Want Revenge. But let’s set him aside for the moment to recall how things went in California. Naturally, hearing that The Pamplemousse was scratched [...] I’ll start off by saying that I don’t believe in curses. True, it’s been a long time since the Santa Anita Derby winner saw the Kentucky Derby winner’s circle (not since Winning Colors and Sunday Silence made it two in a row), but I think it’s time to put that legend to rest. [...] Well Armed may have had the most visually impressive victory on the Dubai World Cup card, but Timeform has ranked him the second-best horse in the world – with Dubai Duty Free winner Gladiatorus number one at a rating of 132 (in case you were wondering, the only other American-based horse apart from Well Armed [...] Why, you may ask, is my weekend preview arriving so early? Easy: logistics. The Family Superfecta is off to Seattle tomorrow (and before you ask – no, I didn’t notice ACRL’s conference was there the same weekend when I booked the tickets, and yes, I know it means every woman in the city [...] |
