We’re only one day away from the Kentucky Oaks – and from Rachel Alexandra returning once more to the scene of her former triumph. One hopes that what little mainstream-ish television coverage there is will replay her historic victory in last year’s Oaks, but for the rest of us, we’ll have to watch her run in the La Troienne on some sort of choppy video from work (or TiVoed on one of the racing channels). She’s back to looking like her old self, as some of the talented photographers on site at Churchill Downs can attest, and it should be great to see her back.

Of course, there’s more going on in between the La Troienne and the Oaks – here is a rundown of the stakes races on Friday:

La Troienne Stakes – 1.26 pm

Be Fair / T J Thompson / 118 / D W Lukas

Morena / J Lezcano / 118 / M R Matz

Zardana / D R Flores / 120 / J A Shirreffs

Rachel Alexandra / C H Borel / 124 / S M Asmussen

Unrivaled Belle / K J Desormeaux / 120 / W I Mott

Distinctive Dixie / J R Leparoux / 118 / W A Dollase

While I look forward to seeing a nearly-fully-fit Rachel Alexandra turn the tables on Zardana, I also hope the Brazilian-bred mare puts in a good effort; I believe she is more talented than some might believe. I may need to use this race to bulk up my Twin Spires account before things kick off in earnest.

Kentucky Juvenile Stakes – 2.10 pm

Saturday Dance / J Graham / 118 / L W Demeritte

Lou Brissie / J R Velazquez / 120 / N J Howard

Wetzel / R Bejarano / 120 / R E Dutrow, Jr.

Weekend Wildcat/ V Lebron / 118 / W Demeritte

Boys At Tosconova/ K J Desormeaux / 118 / R B Hess, Jr.

Final Mesa (f) / J Rosario / 117 /	W A Ward

Nina Fever (f) / R Albarado / 117 / W A Ward

The Freak / A Jimenez / 118 / W R Helmbrecht

Twelve Pack Shelly (f) / H Vega / 117 / J E Salzman

They’re only 2-year-olds, it’s a mix of colts and fillies, and there isn’t much to go on yet. Wesley Ward went 1-2 with his fillies last year, then took one to Royal Ascot for a big win. With that in mine, I’ll be keeping an eye on his filly, Nina Fever, but I suspect that Wetzel will win.

Churchill Downs Turf Sprint – 3.04 pm

Moralist / B Meier / 118 / T Domenosky

Perfect Officer / K J Desormeaux / 118 / Weaver

Chamberlain Bridge / J Theriot / 118 / W B Calhoun

Heavenly Chorus/ S Bridgmohan / 118 / S M Asmussen

Mitigation / A Garcia / 118 / M J Maker

Silver Timber / J R Leparoux / 124 / C C Brown

Starfish Bay / J R Velazquez / 116 /	T A Pletcher

Barge / G K Gomez / 118 / T A Pletcher

Formidable / J Lezcano / 118	/ H A Jerkens

Central City / R Albarado / 118 / R W Werner

Lit’sgoodlookngray / J Talamo / 118 / R B Hess, Jr.

Chamberlain Bridge won this race last year, and is looking to defend his title. I like both Silver Timber and Starfish Bay, but think Silver Timber may have the edge.

Alysheba Stakes – 3.54 pm

Chocolate Candy / R Bejarano / 118 /J Hollendorfer

Friesan Fire / S Bridgmohan / 118 / S M Asmussen

Macho Again / R Albarado / 118 / D Stewart

Cool Coal Man / J Lezcano / 118 / N P Zito

Prom Shoes / C H Borel / 118 / W H Fires

Bullsbay / J Rose / 118 / H G Motion

Arson Squad / P Lopez / 122 / R E Dutrow, Jr.

Flying Private / T J Thompson / 118 / D W Lukas

Enriched / J Rosario / 118 / D F O’Neill

It’s old home week for many in this field - Chocolate Candy, Friesan Fire and Flying Private all contested last year’s Derby, Cool Coal Man tried the year before, and Macho Again, Arson Squad, Prom Shoes and Bullsbay have raced here before in fairly major races. Bullsbay is aiming to defend his Alysheba title, and I’m picking him to repeat, although I expect good races from most of the field, especially Friesan Fire, Macho Again, Arson Squad and Chocolate Candy. That cleared that up, right?

American Turf Stakes – 4.47 pm

Setsuko / R Bejarano / 117 / R E Mandella

Alfarabi / C S Nakatani / 117 / E G Harty

Guys Reward / J Lezcano / 117 /	D L Romans

Lost Aptitude/ K J Desormeaux / 119 / D L Romans

Strike the Tiger / J R Velazquez / 117 / W A Ward

Doubles Partner /	G K Gomez / 117 /T A Pletcher

Asphalt / J R Leparoux / 117 / E Kenneally

Saint Eligius / A Garcia / 117 / K P McLaughlin

Gleam of Hope / R Albarado / 119 / A L Reinstedler

Make Music for Me / J Rosario / 117 / A Barba

Workin for Hops / B J Hernandez, Jr. / 117/ M Stidham

Make Music for Me made the Derby field, but Setsuko did not, so he’s sticking to this race. I’m not entirely convinced by him, however, and as I grow hops in my back yard (some Cascades, Willamette, Centennial and Fuggles, if you were wondering), how can I not pick a horse like Workin for Hops, who also happens to have two wins on turf? I also like Asphalt, though, and Saint Eligius (even if his name puts the St. Elsewhere theme music forever in my head). However, Strike the Tiger was another of Wesley Ward’s winners at Royal Ascot last year – and I like his odds. While I was initially going with Asphalt, I’ve switched my loyalties to Strike the Tiger.

Kentucky Oaks – 5.45 PM

It’s Tea Time / A Garcia / 121 / G R Arnold, II

Jody Slew / M Mena / 121 / W B Calhoun

Quiet Temper / R Albarado / 121 / D L Romans

Age of Humor/ R Maragh / 121 / M J Maker

Blind Luck / R Bejarano / 121 / J Hollendorfer

Beautician/ A O Solis / 121 / K G McPeek

Crisp/ J Rosario / 121 / J W Sadler

Tidal Pool / C H Borel / 121 / D W Lukas

Bella Diamante / M E Smith / 121 / A Milligan

Champagne d’Oro / M Garcia / 121 / E J Guillot

Evening Jewel /	K J Desormeaux / 121 / J M Cassidy

Ailalea / J R Velazquez / 121 / T A Pletcher

Amen Hallelujah / J R Leparoux / 121 / R E Dutrow, Jr.

Joanie’s Catch / P Lopez / 121 / B R Rose

Finally, the big race – hopefully I’ll actually be home in time to watch it. I’ve really liked Blind Luck all along, and am picking her to win. But it’s a big field, and there is considerable talent in the form of Amen Hallelujah and Crisp. Beautician is my long-ish shot, although I expect her odds may drift down before the race – but I’m backing Blind Luck all the way.

Here’s hoping for a safe and exciting Kentucky Oaks day – welcome back, Rachel Alexandra! Check out more Oaks action and history over at Hello Race Fans, follow us on Twitter (@superfecta), and come back tomorrow for our annual dubious Derby picks.

In the meantime, here are a few quick thoughts –

Zenyatta’s first preference is the Classic – huzzah!

Dar Re Mi is down for the Turf, with the F&M Turf as her second choice; also good.

Summer Bird has the Turf has his second choice – I’d love to see him try this at some point.

A thought inspired by Mine That Bird in the Classic – should the Kentucky Derby count as a Win & You’re In race? Not knocking him specifically, since he has been working nicely and since I think his other Triple Crown race efforts are underrated, but would a horse who had done nothing since winning the Derby automatically get a spot in the Classic? Just wondering.

Square Eddie has first preference in the Turf Sprint – that seems a good fit.

Chocolate Candy is technically out of the field at this point (with his first preference, sensibly, being the Dirt Mile) – I’d rather see Quality Road try the Dirt Mile, currently his second choice over the Classic – perhaps he could take on the Mile next year. Like Summer Bird, I think he could do quite well on the grass.

Black Astor in the Marathon, trained by Lisa Lewis – does that make five female trainers with Breeders’ Cup entries this year (including Helen Pitts-Blasi, Josie Carroll, Carla Gaines and Jenine Sahadi)? Did I miss anyone? I worry that may be a record.

Things Californian
Will Spring House surprise Presious Passion in the Clement L Hirsch, or will Artiste Royal repeat?

Mine That Bird gets Calvin Borel back in the Goodwood, but faces a tough field – Chocolate Candy and British newcomer Gitano Hernando are the only other 3-year-olds taking on some quality older horses. Colonel John almost always shows up, but it would also be nice to see Tiago overcome his recent bad luck. As for shock Pacific Classic winner Richard’s Kid – who really knows?

Finally, of course, there is Zenyatta in the Lady’s Secret – will it be lucky 13 for her? She hasn’t faced much this year, but Cocoa Beach could make her work for it; Anabaa’s Creation got quite close last time out – it should be great fun to see what happens.

1 / Chocolate Candy / G. Gomez / J. Hollendorfer / 10-1
I’ve been excited about Chocolate Candy for a while, and I love that he’s getting Garrett Gomez. His fifth-place finish in the Derby was respectable, given the way that race was run, and of course his California record is not bad at all. Definitely one I’ll be watching, even though I haven’t gone back and re-jigged his West Coast Beyers as per the new synthetic formula.

2 / Dunkirk / J. Velazquez / T. Pletcher / 4-1
I did not like him in the Derby based on his lack of preparation, but for a horse making his fourth lifetime start, he actually ran pretty well, given what a terrible trip he had. I’m not usually a fan of Derby excuses, but he certainly had some legitimate ones. I don’t think he’ll win, but I do think he will be a factor.

3 / Mr. Hot Stuff / E. Prado / E. Harty / 15-1
While I like that he’s by Tiznow (and really like his dam’s pedigree) and I’m a fan of Eoin Harty, he doesn’t seem quite fast enough – he’s never won a stakes race.

4 / Summer Bird / K. Desormeaux / T. Ice / 12-1
Before the Derby, I wrote him off as being more of a Belmont horse – and while he’s got a great pedigree for this race, I was really put off by the jockey change from Joe Talamo to Kent Desormeaux. The Sheets folks love this horse, but his Beyers haven’t been spectacular. Feel free to pick your formula.

5 / Luv Gov / M. Mena / D. W. Lukas / 20-1
While it’s true a horse from Marylou Whitney’s stable has sprung the Belmont upset before, Birdstone had a much stronger resume coming into the race. He does seem to be improving, but it’s hard not to be with only a maiden win.

6 / Charitable Man / A. Garcia / K. McLaughlin / 3-1
His win over the Belmont track in the Peter Pan and his Belmont-winning sire are making him a popular choice; he’s still pretty lightly-raced, but he does have the services of Alan Garcia and clearly likes the track. Again, though, his Beyers are not that exciting and I wonder about the distance for him based on how much encouragement he needed in the Peter Pan.

7 / Mine That Bird / C. Borel / C. Woolley / 2-1
If you had informed me on May 1st that a little over a month later I’d be cheering for a little Birdstone gelding who had prepped in Canada and New Mexico, I would have assumed you were working on some sort of horse racing alternate universe parody. Yet here we are – and if you compare Early Period Bob Baffert to Chip Woolley’s position now, it’s not wildly dissimilar – have a look at this article from 1996 which speaks of Baffert training ‘…blue-light specials from K-mart’ to great success while D. Wayne Lukas had the best-bred horses handed to him.

But back to the horse himself – some have knocked his running style as not the best for the Belmont – yet that single move from near the back of the pack is exactly how his sire, Birdstone, won the race. The other caution, Calvin Borel’s lack of experience at Belmont, seems a more legitimate concern – but if he’s guaranteeing victory, hey, why not?

8 / Flying Private / J. Leparoux / D. W. Lukas / 12-1
I was actually somewhat impressed by his Preakness finish – but I don’t know that he’s going to improve off of that. His biggest asset, in my opinion, is having Julien Leparoux aboard – he’s going to be a busy man on Saturday.

9 / Miner’s Escape / J. Lezcano / N. Zito / 15-1
Zito-trained winner of the Federico Tesio has a really interesting pedigree (he’s by Mineshaft, his dam is by Broad Brush) but his resume is rather thin otherwise (and his Beyers are low). But if we’re working on the ‘bet a Zito longshot in the Belmont’ principle, he’s the one I would go with.

10 / Brave Victory / R. Maragh / N. Zito / 15-1
He was third in the Peter Pan, so at least he knows this track – but again, he was third in the Peter Pan. That will look a lot more impressive if Charitable Man wins, but he seems the weaker of the two Zito longshots.

Bring on the Calvin Crown! If I’m being forced to bet a dime superfecta, here it goes: Mine That Bird, Chocolate Candy, Dunkirk, Miner’s Escape.

I’ll be Twittering (@superfecta) and live-blogging all afternoon from Belmont – feel free to follow along!

If it stays wet, I’ll also put something on Dunkirk. Hmm…

Quite a surprising start to Derby morning so far!

I am sorry that we won’t get to see Joe Talamo ride in his first Derby this year – but if there’s another young jockey who deserves a great chance to win, it’s Gabriel Saez.

Update: I’m heading off for a Derby party shortly (and will be playing with some newborn foals there – perhaps one of them will make the field in 2012), but am also considering a small wager on the Dubai horses and perhaps Musket Man. I may or may not have Twitter access (I’m @superfecta, if you’re not already following me), but if all goes well, I hope to have at least a few comments there.

Have a great Derby day!

Without further ado, here is your official Superfecta Kentucky Derby handicapping exercise for 2009 – as ever, with the note that my recent successes with Smarty Jones and Barbaro are tempered by the fact that my last correctly-predicted winner was Winning Colors in 1988. You have been warned.

1) West Side Bernie
Upside: Seems to be improving, has some good seasoning. Second to I Want Revenge last time out.
Downside: Not sure he wants the distance – or if he’s fast enough

2) Musket Man
Upside: Keeps looking better and better in retrospect
Downside: Not a huge fan of jockey Eibar Coa

3) Mr. Hot Stuff
Upside: I like trainer Eoin Harty
Downside: Looks like a sprinter/miler

4) Advice
Upside: Nice move in his last race
Downside: Polytrack specialist

5) Hold Me Back
Upside: Not among the very best, but could hit the board
Downside: Does he also prefer Polytrack?

6) Friesan Fire
Upside: Love the breeding, love his versatility
Downside: Layoff could be a downside – or could leave him fresh

9) Join in the Dance
Upside: Still looking for one
Downside: Rabbit

10) Regal Ransom
Upside: Love Alan Garcia on just about anything
Downside: UAE form still a question mark

15) Dunkirk
Upside: Florida Derby performance; high Tomlinson rating
Downside: Curlin couldn’t do it with so few races

16) Pioneerof the Nile
Upside: California record; possibility that Bode Baffert will sing in the winner’s circle
Downside: Low Beyers – and the dirt question

17) Summer Bird
Upside: I like his pedigree…
Downside: …but not on 3 lifetime starts

18) Nowhere to Hide
Upside: Um…Nick Zito surprise? Likes an off track?
Downside: Seems entirely outclassed

19) Desert Party
Upside: Breeding, previous record
Downside: What did he beat in Dubai?

Preferences: I’d love to see a Friesan Fire/Papa Clem/Chocolate Candy/General Quarters superfecta.
Prediction – dry track: I Want Revenge/Friesan Fire/Papa Clem/General Quarters
Prediction – wet track: Friesan Fire/General Quarters/Dunkirk/I Want Revenge

Wagering to be determined tomorrow, probably en route to the Derby party I’ll be attending – check back later today for some semi-liveblogging of Kentucky Oaks day!

However, high Tomlinson ratings alone aren’t going to raise Join in the Dance or Nowhere to Hide much in my estimation – but it could mean that even with a sloppy track, Join in the Dance tears away to set a fairly wicked pace. Although I really like Chocolate Candy, if it’s coming up very damp, I may decide it won’t be his afternoon (and I’d have the perfect excuse to toss Pioneerof the Nile entirely). I can’t decide where I Want Revenge figures in the event of truly bad weather – but given how quickly the track dries at Churchill Downs, it’s likely an outside possibility. Still, it’s good to be prepared.

Here’s hoping the weather holds off long enough that we get to see Zenyatta run tomorrow (and that we have a good view of Rachel Alexandra demolishing the Oaks field). More to come then…

Yes, we’re seeing a depth of talent we have not for some time, but I was rather hoping that might keep some of the Derby Fever crowd away. You can make a fantastic case for why seven or eight of them could find the winner’s circle and a pretty good one for perhaps another seven – but the ‘leftovers’ seem horribly outclassed.

I don’t think anyone has been terribly compromised by a bad post position but I was a bit surprised by some of the morning line odds. 20-1 on Chocolate Candy? The same for Papa Clem? 30-1 on Regal Ransom, but 15-1 on Desert Party in the 19 slot? I have no real argument with any of the 50-1 shots, but I will say that I would love it if the aforementioned horses stayed at double-digit odds!

There’s been another wholly sensible Derby defection; following in the slightly-bloody hoofprints of Quality Road, Square Eddie is also bowing out of the Derby field. It’s rather refreshing to see that two very talented horses are being handled with such caution – both should be back later in the season once they have fully returned to fighting shape.

The Blood-Horse reports that in addition to coverage in peculiar places like Access Hollywood, there is also promotion of the Derby via BlogHer (‘an iVillage partner‘ – and I should mention that back in the day I used to work with one of the founders of BlogHer at Women.com, which was eventually subsumed by iVillage). This is news to me, despite the fact that I am a BlogHer member – I have yet to see anything racing-related over there that isn’t just a feed from my site. I had to miss yesterday’s NTRA/blogger conference call since it was scheduled for my usual train home, but I wonder if it was mentioned at all in that discussion. I’d be very curious to see exactly what sort of promotion the BlogHer deal covered – but I digress, back to the horses!

The weather report is looking fairly ominous for Oaks Day at this point; while it should be better on Saturday, just in case the wet weather stays on one wonders what that means for Papa Clem (sure, he was still second in the slop on Louisiana Derby day, but it was a long way back behind Friesan Fire), or if this indeed hands an advantage to Friesan Fire (whose lightning-fast workout was the subject of much discussion yesterday). Checking everyone’s Tomlinson ratings after the field is set will no doubt be in order this year – just in case.

All the contenders are getting their final works in; Chocolate Candy worked yesterday as well, with I Want Revenge burning up the track earlier today – it was ‘GREAT‘ according to jockey Joe Talamo (who seems to have become quite the media property this week – well done to him for staying cool under that sort of pressure) – and I should add that I Want Revenge did not sell himself short either. Tomorrow’s post position draw won’t be televised, but I’m sure it will be very popular on Twitter as well…
