Here&#8217;s our quick race-by-race rundown (including links to the handy interactive racecards from </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7568">Emirates Racing</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">).</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7539">Godolphin Mile</a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Gayego</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> seems to be thriving since his purchase by Godolphin and his subsequent move to the UAE; he won over the same track earlier this month. Godolphin also has </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Two Step Salsa</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> in this race. </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Art of War</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> finished third behind </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Asiatic Boy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> earlier this month, but the shorter distance may suit him here. California-based </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/49818/informed-unruly-but-talented">Informed</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is looking to build his profile as well. While it’s an interesting field all around, I like </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Gayego&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> chances.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7542">UAE Derby</a><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">This is, on paper, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Desert Party&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> coming out party; a win here sends him to Kentucky. Looking to spoil the his day are </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Regal Ransom</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Redding Colliery</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, both horses who finished behind him last time out. I should know more about the rest of the field, but alas, I do not. I wouldn&#8217;t be entirely surprised to see </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Desert Party</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> beaten, though.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7543">Golden Shaheen</a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> was a bit unlucky to draw the outside post here; I don’t think that bodes well for her chances, but I also think </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Diabolical</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is not quite the threat he might have been in the past. </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Hammadi</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is coming off a win here and he may be one to watch. I do hope </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> gets to pick up a check.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7544">Dubai Duty Free</a><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">This may be the most competitive race on the card – there are so many horses I like in this race, including </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Archipenko</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Tuesday Joy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Niconero</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Paco Boy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Lady Marian</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Jay Peg</span> hoping to defend his title. <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Kip Deville</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> seems outgunned here. I’m thinking </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Archipenko</span> might pull it off, but <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Lady Marian</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> has Frankie Dettori aboard…</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7545">Sheema Classic</a><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">Another very interesting international field; </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Youmzain</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> may be past his best, and I’m curious to see where </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Red Rocks</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> fits in this picture, but I confess I’m chiefly watching </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Front House</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> (a winner here recently), </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Doctor Dino</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">King of Rome</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">. </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Quijano</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> could give Germany a Dubai win.</span></p>
<p><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.emiratesracing.com/eq/RaceCards.cfm?racefile_id=7546">Dubai World Cup</a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Asiatic Boy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is looking to win after finishing second last year, and trainer Mike de Kock has again enlisted the services of Johnny Murtagh. </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Happy Boy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is another strong contender, although the outside post position could be detrimental to </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">My Indy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">. </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Albertus Maximus</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is the toughest US-based entrant and is doing everything right, but I’m not sure I love his or </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Well Armed&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> chances on Saturday (and the same goes for Japan’s </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">). </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Asiatic Boy</span> just may pull it off this time.</p>

Anything could happen in the Marathon, the two-year-old races might produce any number of unusual results and the surface will be new to defending champion </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Curlin</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and foreign entrants alike, so the Classic is no foregone conclusion. In fact, it may be the most difficult race to handicap; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has had a long season and may bounce after his effort in the Arc, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is untested at the distance and, frankly, I have no idea what to make of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at this point. I&#8217;ll probably put a couple of dollars his way just out of respect for his family (ditto for </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Champs Elysees</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">), but it&#8217;s going to be a tough one. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>I think it will be a good day for Aidan O&#8217;Brien (and the other foreign trainers) on balance &#8212; it would be hard to make it worse than the situation with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >George Washington</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> last year &#8212; but whether that success will come in the Classic or elsewhere on the card remains to be seen.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Of course, I&#8217;m happy to offer my opinions in advance:</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Marathon</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />1) Church Service</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Solid G3 performer &#8211; might be enough to hit the</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;">board here</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />2) Add Heat</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Local, but not a winner recently</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />3) Delightful Kiss</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Best American hope in this race?</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />4) Sixties Icon</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Class of the field; switch from turf the only issue</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />5) Muhannak</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Solid European performer likes artificial surfaces</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />6) Zappa</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Another California specialist</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ><br />7) Big Booster</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Distance specialist hasn&#8217;t won since April</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > <img src='http://superfectablog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> Cedar Mountain</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Son of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Galileo</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> wasn&#8217;t up to Europe&#8217;s best</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >9) Booyah</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8211; Versatile, but not a great record</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" ></p>

I&#8217;m interested to see </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >King of Rome</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> down for the Dirt Marathon (along with </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, although the Classic is still his first choice) rather than the Turf; given what looks like a talent shortage in the Marathon, it may be an easy spot for him. What is actually quite intriguing is that none of the Ballydoyle stars are cross-entered &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Duke of Marmalade</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> are both entered in the Classic and only the Classic, and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Soldier of Fortune</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is set for the Turf. </span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Plenty of American horses are taking advantage of cross-entries, however (until they are forced to choose next Tuesday). </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Awesome Gem</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> seems overmatched in either the Classic or the Mile, but at least there&#8217;s an option; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> has the Filly &amp; Mare Sprint as her first choice, with the Sprint as a backup plan. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Lewis Michael</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> will choose between the Dirt Mile and the Sprint, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Precious Kitten</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> between the Filly &amp; Mare Turf and the Mile and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Pyro</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> could contest the Classic or the Dirt Mile (which seems a better spot for him at this point). The connections of </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Slew&#8217;s Tizzy</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ventura</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Well Armed</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> all have decisions to make as well.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>Among other slightly surprising entries are </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Champs Elysees</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Classic (while Bobby Frankel had suggested he might enter him, I imagined he would be cross-entered in something else too), which seems to be coming up tougher than the Turf and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >US Ranger</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the Mile. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Diabolical</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is set to resurface in the Turf Sprint; it&#8217;s been a while since we&#8217;ve seen him.</span> <span style="font-family:verdana;"></p>
<p>But there is one old reliable we can look forward to &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Better Talk Now</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is back for his </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2008/October/13/Better-Talk-Now-on-target-for-fifth-BC-Turf-start.aspx">fifth shot</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> at the Turf. Given that everyone seems to be gravitating toward the Classic this year, why not give it another go?</span></p>

It&#8217;s entirely possible he may skip the race for the Japan Dirt Cup, or he could even take on both.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">In the event we do see him on October 25th, who might his competitors be? <span style="font-weight: bold;">Go Between</span>, winner of the Pacific Classic, has </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3641972">been mentioned</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> as a possible starter, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Colonel John</span> seems to be flying under the radar despite being proven in California (although, granted, not against the likes of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span>). Many media eyes have shifted to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Casino Drive</span>; Steve Haskin notes that he is &#8216;</span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://news.bloodhorse.com/article/47533.htm?id=47533">no ordinary horse</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.&#8217; His allowance win over the weekend allowed him to easily dominate a less-than-imposing field and he obviously has plenty of talent &#8212; but winning the Breeders&#8217; Cup Classic with so little experience would be quite a feat.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">The pre-entries this week will likely show a number of the top European competitors entered in both the Mile and the Classic; Aidan O&#8217;Brien seems as though he does not want to tip his hand just yet with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Henrythenavigator</span>. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goldikova&#8217;s</span> connections have chosen </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/breederscup08/news/story?id=3641971">the Mile</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> over the Filly &amp; Mare Turf, but whether we see <span style="font-weight: bold;">Duke of Marmalade</span> take her on or pass up the race for </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12426_4261146,00.html">the Classic</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> remains to be seen. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Raven&#8217;s Pass</span> may also be pre-entered in both races, but it&#8217;s possible the picture will become slightly clearer </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/47500/bc-pre-entries-to-be-announced-oct-16">on Thursday</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">While I don&#8217;t entirely agree with </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.horseraceinsider.com/blog.php/west-coast-wash/10142008-a-classic-in-a-minor-key/">Bill Christine that</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> &#8216;<span style="font-weight: bold;">Curlin</span> vs. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Zenyatta</span> in the Classic is the only matchup that can save this Breeders&#8217; Cup now&#8217; I admit I&#8217;d very much like to see that&#8230;</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >True North Handicap</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Rick Dutrow&#8217;s other favorite on the card, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Benny the Bull</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, is back from Dubai. </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://thoroughbredbloggersalliance.blogspot.com/">TBA</a><span style="font-family:verdana;"> favorite </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Thor&#8217;s Echo</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is also back from a break, now with blinkers on. The half-blind </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Storm in May</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is a longshot in this race (and deservedly so, given his recent form), but I could see him getting up to show. I also like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Suave Jazz</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and hope he gets a piece of the action, but it&#8217;s a tough field.</p>
<p></span> <span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Just a Game Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">My favorites for this are chalky as can be &#8211; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Criminologist</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Vacare</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Lady of Venice</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">. Still, if </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ventura&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> odds remain in double-digits near post time, I may put some money on her; I don&#8217;t like overlooking Bobby Frankel-trained turf mares anywhere, but especially not at Belmont.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Acorn </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">Welcome back, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Indian Blessing</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">! This won&#8217;t be much of a betting race on paper, but I&#8217;m looking forward to seeing the aforementioned filly return.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Woody Stephens </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" > Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">I like a few longshots in this race &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Majestic Warrior</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Fatal Bullet</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">. </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Ready&#8217;s Image</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >J Be K</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> are worthy favorites, but perhaps this will be the race with a little value.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">First, I&#8217;m very annoyed that </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Einstein</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> won&#8217;t be in this race &#8212; thanks again, </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.ntra.com/content.aspx?type=news&amp;id=32859">Midnight Cry</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">! Perhaps they can decorate their jail cells with their expired NY licenses. But I digress; this race is still loaded, most notably with fan favorite </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Better Talk Now </span><span style="font-family:verdana;">(pictured)</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">. Last year I was sure he was a little past his best <span style="font-family:verdana;">and he got up to win this race &#8212; here&#8217;s hoping he </span></span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/horseracing/bal-sp.now06jun06,0,6294014.story">does it again</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">. It&#8217;s going to be a tall order, though, with talent like </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Out of Control</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Proudinsky</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Dancing Forever</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> in the picture. I also believe </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Shakis</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> and </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Stream of Gold</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> have been underperforming and could suddenly get it together tomorrow. It should be a great race in its own right; much more than an able warm-up for the main event. I&#8217;m still not drinking </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.woodfordreserve.com/bigbrown/intro.aspx">this</a><span style="font-family:verdana;">, though.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Belmont Stakes</span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;">And as to the Belmont itself, if </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> is out (and I hope he is not), I see little standing in </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Big Brown&#8217;s</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> way &#8212; but I will be placing some longshot bets on </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Denis of Cork</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Anak Nakal,</span><span style="font-family:verdana;"> <span style="font-weight: bold;">Icabad Crane</span> and possibly </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:verdana;" >Tale of Ekati</span><span style="font-family:verdana;">, just in case. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">Here&#8217;s one prediction I can with utter certainty: I won&#8217;t be able to do a post-race update until Monday, as I will be busy Sunday watching the US take on Argentina in a friendly at Giants Stadium. This one really is a foregone conclusion: we&#8217;re going to lose, and lose big.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:verdana;">See you in New York&#8230;</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Here&#8217;s hoping he&#8217;s fit&#8230;or that it&#8217;s some sort of elaborate mind game. I don&#8217;t want a coronation without a fight. Given the personalities involved in this year&#8217;s Triple Crown, I hope with equal fervor that no sort of deal was done behind the scenes&#8230;</span></p>

<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><p><span style="font-size: 85%;">Take the two Coolmore horses, Giants Causeway and Rock of Gibraltar, both of whom were top-class milers who won races over a mile and a quarter. They would have been valued at €50m and €30m respectively when they went to stud. Galileo, who won the Derby, would have been valued at around €20m, which illustrates that even for the best potential staying sire there is a top limit. And Galileo is the ultimate success story — most Derby winners do not make overwhelmingly successful sires. There is no doubt that the miling division is more valuable as breeding stock than the mile-and-a-half division.</p>
<p>For me, what is needed to restore the Derby is its inclusion in more of an integrated European racing programme to reflect that racing has become more international in the past 30 years. If you took a logical progression, you could create a Triple Crown of the French Derby, the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby that the fans and gamblers would care about as much as the breeders.</p>
<p>The difficulty in attracting sponsorship suggests that the whole of horse racing does not have the cachet socially that it once did. And yet, racing demographics should be very good; certainly to owners in America, you would be advertising Cadillacs. Part of the answer has to be that the industry must present a far better product for everybody, through a radical restructuring of prize money and a more international view to the calendar.</p>
<p></span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">In the other corner, Marcus Tregoning, trainer of </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Sir Percy</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, the 2006 victor, argues that the race still maintains its prestige after nearly 230 years &#8212; but like Oppenheim, he laments the lack of a major sponsor:</span></p>
<blockquote style="font-family: verdana;"><p><span style="font-size: 85%;">And winning the race does prove the horse&#8217;s quality. Sir Percy won races over a mile and a mile and a half but he proved himself a champion when he won the Derby and that is why he had a block of mares queuing up for him. And you have to look at Galileo too, the 2001 champion, who has been doing extremely well at stud. For most owners and trainers in this country, the Derby is the race to win.</p>
<p>The race is far from dwindling in popularity and has actually increased its relevance to the public in recent years. There are far more people who go to the Derby now than there were 10 years ago. It should attract a top-class permanent sponsor, they just haven&#8217;t quite found the right one yet. It is an important choice because there is a lot of money involved; it is a massive prize and so it should be for a race of such significance.</p>
<p></span></p></blockquote>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Certainly, there is no lack of quality horses participating &#8211; most of the likely </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12427_3648028,00.html">17-horse field</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> have earned the right to compete with the best of their generation. Aiden O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s five trainees make up the majority of the seven-horse </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/breaking-news/sport/horse-racing/article3771936.ece">Irish contingent</a><span style="font-family: verdana;">, although Dermot Weld&#8217;s position seems stronger with </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Casual Conquest</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> (pictured) &#8211; the same can be said for Jim Bolger with </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">New Approach</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">. It seems </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2008/05/30/shhots130.xml">unlikely</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> that O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s hot </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Henrythenavigator</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> will start, given the forecast for rain and soft ground.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Godolphin will send out the American-bred </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Rio De La Plata</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> with Frankie Dettori aboard but his backing seems somewhat lukewarm. I am keeping an eye on </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Tartan Bearer</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">, trained by Sir Michael Stoute; he was impressive in his last win in the </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.ballymacollstud.com/horse.cfm?horse_id=72&amp;page=news">Dante Stakes</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> (run on Preakness Day, by American reckoning). You can&#8217;t dislike a horse whose owner/breeder, Ballymacoll Stud, keeps his </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.ballymacollstud.com/news.cfm?news_id=69">baby pictures</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> online.</span> <span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span></p>
<p>For those concerned that <span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Casino Drive</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> has only had two starts before the Belmont, you may want to reserve your opinion on how relevant that may be until after the Derby &#8212; </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: verdana;">Casual Conquest</span><span style="font-family: verdana;"> is also unbeaten in two starts (and was </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/jun/05/horseracing1">virtually unknown</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> until about three weeks ago). There&#8217;s more than one way to win a </span><a style="font-family: verdana;" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2006/jun/19/horseracing.gdnsport3">middle-distance</a><span style="font-family: verdana;"> race&#8230;</span></p>
