All in all, this year’s Belmont was a great day out – perfect weather, a great undercard and an exciting Belmont Stakes. The fact that we left the track with considerably more money than we came in with was a nice bonus (even if it was followed with a smidgen of ‘but we had that and didn’t bet it’ here and there).

I was quite impressed by Benny The Bull’s return in the True North – I really wasn’t expecting him to be so close to his best form in his first race back after such a long layoff – but I’m also not sure he would have beaten Fabulous Strike under any circumstances. Given that the track was still only officially ‘good’ at that point, nearly equaling the record was certainly impressive all around – I’ll look forward to seeing the two hook up again later this summer. We did officially lose a bit of money, since I’d stuck with Two Step Salsa. Betting FAIL.

Our wallets bounced back with Diamondrella in the Just A Game; I had high hopes for Modern Look who made a brief run toward the end (Forever Together was boxed up for the majority of the race), but our across-the-board bet on Diamondrella more than made up for my losing Modern Look bet. I was actually surprised to see her go off at such long odds, given that she was coming off an even longer winning streak than Forever Together.

Around the Just A Game is when the MTV kids showed up and began filming; I still have no idea what that was all about or when it will air, but hey, if it’s getting 15-year-old kids to the track, why not? (Although I have to say we thought the kids in question were even younger – if, indeed, it was a dating show as rumored, I can’t think of many places beyond the track where a tween couple might go for a cheap afternoon out – but are they even old enough to bet?)

The Woody Stephens was another money-loser for us; I’d toyed with a last-minute across-the-board bet on Munnings after seeing how great he looked in the post parade, but we stuck with Hull and Everyday Heroes boxed with This Ones for Phil. Naturally, Munnings won impressively. Lesson learned – or not.

The Acorn was where we really got stung; we’d been boxing exactas all day, but did a straight one with Gabby’s Golden Gal underneath Justwhistledixie. You can look at that as having cost either $2, or something closer to $90. I think that one will bother me for a little while.

I finally made my way out to the paddock before the Manhattan – even on a relatively-lightly-attended Belmont day, getting from the seats to the paddock and back in time is no speedy matter, but I wasn’t going to miss a chance to see Better Talk Now up close (again – I may have more photos of him than of any other horse in training) – even though I didn’t hold out much hope of him doing well in the actual race. Of course, he looked wonderful in the paddock and I kept thinking how great it was that he looked so fit and ready to go at his age – but of course I left him out of my trifecta anyway. I was busy taking pictures of Wesley, whose third-place finish in the Dixie on Preakness day had rewarded me fairly handsomely, and I’d invested accordingly. I had some complicated tickets with Gio Ponti over Wesley and/or Court Vision and Cosmonaut, but none of them included either Better Talk Now or eventual second-place finisher Marsh Side (nor were any just on Gio Ponti – I’d assumed, for some reason, that he’d go off at something like 2-1 and figured it wasn’t worth the effort – whoops). But it was great to see Better Talk Now fighting on for third – clearly, he’s not done. I was disappointed with Wesley’s performance, but I’ll assume for future reference that he just doesn’t like soft turf.

Finally, it was time for the big race; after failing to find anywhere I could bet my dime superfecta (clerks couldn’t do one, which seems ludicrous, nor was there any place obvious to get a card for the betting machines), I put together a $1 version in which I threw out Chocolate Candy – I’d picked Mine That Bird, Dunkirk, Charitable Man and Summer Bird. However, we ended up deciding it would be too expensive to box and we didn’t want to bet it straight, so we nixed the idea. (Sigh.) Instead, we had an exacta box with Mine That Bird, Summer Bird and Dunkirk as well as an across-the-board bet on Summer Bird. When Charitable Man drifted up to 5-1, I also put a show bet on him – I just couldn’t get into the idea of him winning for some reason.

I had very different takes on the race in person and when I watched it back on television – like many, I thought initially that Calvin Borel moved far too soon on Mine That Bird (I was a little surprised he only had one other mount on the card, given how infrequently he visits Belmont, and thought that might have been a factor). I revised my opinion somewhat after checking in at home with my TiVo – I’m not sure he had much of a choice, since the little horse was clearly eager to go. Both Mine That Bird and Dunkirk ran tough, gritty races and deserve commendation – poor Dunkirk still seemed like he didn’t quite get what this was all about but was just hanging in there with pure talent. I can’t say I love how his career has been managed thus far – I would be very curious to see how he would do in a different training situation.

Of course, Summer Bird ran a terrific race to win – I was very dubious about Kent Desormeax riding, but it made more sense in the context of trainer Tim Ice’s personal relationship with him. I’ve never been a fan of Desormeax in the Belmont, but this time he got it right on and ensured that Summer Bird had the perfect trip. I hope to see him hook up with Mine That Bird, Dunkirk and Rachel Alexandra later this summer. I imagine that Birdstone’s $10,000 stud fee will be shooting up into the stratosphere after siring 2/3 of the winners in this year’s Triple Crown series (as well as Oaks runner-up Stone Legacy, among others) – he and Medaglia d’Oro seem to be on quite a streak lately – I wonder if Darley will try to swoop in for Birdstone as well.

And I have another note about Mine That Bird in response to the idiot at the track who was loudly proclaiming that he ‘should have been taken down’ (even though Dunkirk was obviously the subject of the post-race inquiry) and that he was a ‘worthless horse who will never win another race’ – stfu, dude! This little gelding won the Derby, was a close second in the Preakness and not far off for third in the Belmont – he’s assured a place in history for that alone, and he’s clearly bursting with talent. Obviously you are still bitter you missed him in the Derby and left him out of your trifecta on Saturday – but if you’re planning to write him off and never bet him again, well, I’m happy to think I’ll get slightly better odds on him as a result. I look forward to a long and prosperous career for him – and hopefully for everyone who ran on Saturday.

I look forward to discovering who will appear in the Haskell, the Travers, etc. – and am pleased we have such a good group working toward the Breeders’ Cup this fall (especially when you consider the older horses like Einstein, Brass Hat and Better Talk Now). Perhaps I will need to think about a trip to LA…

In the meantime, feel free to browse my Belmont day pictures here.

Belmont day is one of my favorite days of racing all year, largely because of the fantastic undercard it features, and this year is no exception.

The True North should be interesting, with Fabulous Strike and Kodiak Kowboy taking on Disco’s Son and Per Incanto. It definitely has the makings of an interesting betting race.

I’ll wait to see the final entries for the Just a Game, but I like Forever Together; I may also go for my Belmont fallback position of ‘Alan Garcia’s horse’ which seems to pay off not infrequently.

The year’s Acorn is a little lacking in star power (and out of all the races on Belmont day, it has probably had the most storied list of winners: Gallorette, Shuvee, Susan’s Girl, Chris Evert, Ruffian et al.) but Justwhistledixie will likely be the deserving favorite, with Just Jenda and Doremifasollatido getting some action as well.

Perhaps the toughest race on the card will be the Woody Stephens – Like Jessica, I’m not sure what to make of Hello Broadway at this point, but Hull is very interesting and I’m intrigued to see Regal Ransom as a possible starter. This Ones For Phil should like the distance.

In the Manhattan Handicap, 10-year-old Better Talk Now will be making his 50th start and it will have one of the most interesting lineups on the card – Court Vision and Cowboy Cal have both come into their own since moving to the turf, and Grand Couturier and Gio Ponti are always dangerous. While I don’t think this will be Better Talk Now’s year to grab a second victory in the race, Brass Hat’s recent resurgence demonstrates that it’s a bad idea to discount the old guys out of hand.

And as for the big race – well, you’ll have to check back tomorrow (and the rest of the week) for that. But I’m certainly hoping to see Calvin Borel win his own personal Triple Crown on Mine That Bird – he’s going to be a busy man this week, what with ringing The Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday and making various media appearances around town.

I’ll just be happy to be back on my old stomping grounds – a real bagel before heading to the track and a Nathan’s Famous hot dog with (hopefully) a Brooklyn Lager will be in order once I arrive…

The long holiday weekend we’ve just exited was a case study in the highs and lows of the sport. It’s impossible not to be excited by victories like Zenyatta’s in the Milady or old warhorse Brass Hat’s in the Louisville; however, the sobering accident at Arlington involving Rene Douglas was the flip side of that otherwise-bright coin.

First, the good news; Zenyatta’s delayed 5-year-old debut showed that the big mare has not lost any conditioning – she’s still doing her own little dressage competition in the post parade and then dawdling at the back of the pack before blowing by the field. It seems that every race really is the same for the undefeated champ. As impressive and effortless as her acceleration is, it would be so much more interesting to see her hook up with a true peer. Despite some encouraging comments after the race that she could face some stiffer competition, it seem that she will rather be pointed toward (to put it in ‘American Idol’ parlance) safe places.

Like Dana, I’m hoping to see something a little more unexpected in the long run – more people deserve to know who Zenyatta is, but beating up on SoCal mares isn’t the way to achieve wider recognition. A Breeders’ Cup showdown with Rachel Alexandra could be great indeed, but it would be even better to see them meet up on neutral ground first. Certainly new owner Jess Jackson wasn’t particularly interested in taking Rachel Alexandra to Santa Anita (given Curlin’s lackluster effort on Pro-Ride) unless it meant a crack at Einstein, Well Armed and the other big boys. (And I must confess that if Rachel Alexandra were to pull a Zarkava and beat older males, I’d be forever in awe).

Speaking of Rachel Alexandra, there’s still no word as to whether or not she will be Belmont-bound; given the way she is working it sounds as though she wants to go. Some have argued that in recent years a Belmont victory spells career doom, although I would argue that there’s a world of difference between a horse like Rachel Alexandra and, say, Sarava or Da’Tara. Afleet Alex was likely injured in the Preakness yet won the Belmont anyway and Empire Maker was rushed off to stud after the Jim Dandy (although you could probably also make the ‘rush to the breeding shed after minor injury’ argument about Afleet Alex, Smarty Jones – even Rags to Riches). Jazil had the breeding, but he probably still falls into the ‘freak longshot win’ category. While it’s true in recent years that Belmont winners have not, on the whole, done much beyond perhaps participating in the Travers, that seems to be due to a combination of two factors – early retirement when the horse is at its perceived peak financial value (these are, usually, stallions we are speaking about, after all) and fewer legitimate winners with distance pedigrees. Whether Rachel Alexandra goes or not, we can at least take heart that Mine That Bird won’t be shipping directly from Belmont to a stud farm.

And thus back to my favorite hard-knocking gelding – Brass Hat finally proved that he can win on turf (with a little help from the seemingly ever-present Calvin Borel). Unlike many of the horses mentioned above who were spirited off to retirement with injuries that would have earned them a little rest and a subsequent return in the past, Brass Hat continues to demonstrate that it takes more than a few potentially life-threatening injuries to keep him down. Just think – when Brass Hat was foaled in 2001, Rachel Alexandra’s sire, Megaglia d’Oro had yet to make his 2-year-old debut – and Mine That Bird’s sire, Birdstone, had just been born a week earlier. In horse racing career lifespan terms, Brass Hat practically has his own TARDIS – he’s even got a year on fellow time traveler Einstein. Long may he continue.

There was still more high-quality racing over the weekend – Bribon won the Met Mile at Belmont and Thorn Song took the Shoemaker Mile in California, but a pall was cast over events by the injury to veteran jockey Rene Douglas. This article explains the accident in some detail, while this somewhat unfortunately-titled Thoroughbred Times article, ‘Theriot suspended, Born to Be euthanized’ fills in the blanks about the filly involved.

I recommend a read of the Paulick Report commentary about the role of the stewards in these sorts of incidents; it’s an overdue discussion in my opinion and while it acknowledges the part played by jockey Jamie Theriot in the accident, it’s evident there is plenty of blame to go around elsewhere. One hopes something positive may come out of that.

While those efforts are not going to help Rene Douglas walk again, you can get involved in a number of activities being organized to assist his family via a Facebook group or you might consider a donation to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Hopefully Douglas will not be joining their ranks, but it’s certainly a worthy cause.

Zenyatta is defending her title and unbeaten record in the Milady at Hollywood Park. She won’t have much competition, however- her stablemate, Life Is Sweet is the only real threat. While a fine racemare (and winner of the Santa Margarita last time out), she doesn’t seem to be in quite the same orbit as Zenyatta. Of course, it’s possible the long break since last year’s Breeders’ Cup could catch up to her, but it seems Zenyatta’s only real competition is Rachel Alexandra – although I’d also love to see who would win if she faced Einstein on Polytrack.

My non-Einstein perennial favorite, Brass Hat, is back in action this weekend as well. I freely admit I thought his best days were behind him, but the hard-knocking gelding proved me wrong with a solid third in his last start. He has another positive working for him as well – Calvin Borel will ride him in the Louisville Handicap. One hopes some of Borel’s reflected glory might get a little mainstream coverage for a horse who’s had such an interesting history and who certainly deserves the spotlight. Perhaps someday he’ll be a mentor for Mine That Bird. Brass Hat has no easy task – he’ll be facing Spice Route (who bested him in the Elkhorn last time) again.

Like John, I was saddened to hear about the death of Broad Brush – his record of 14 wins from 27 starts stands in stark contrast to that of most stallions today – only the aforementioned Einstein is even close with 11 wins from 25 starts. In addition to his wins on the track, I loved Broad Brush’s pedigree (no Northern Dancer or Bold Ruler anywhere); it’s a shame his sons have never really passed it on since he was a model of durability and consistency. And he shared a factoid with Musket Man – both finished third in the Derby and Preakness.

Finally, remember to set your TiVos this weekend – as pleasantly distracting as a holiday can be, it would be a shame to miss Zenyatta’s return.

While we initially kicked around the notion of a nice mid-size track (for our own convenience, we liked Delaware Park as the first home for the event) hosting a day or series of races restricted to ‘certified organic’ horses. The long-term goal would be to have a major organization (e.g. the Breeders’ Cup) take the notion of drug-free runners and run with it. Here is how I propose to roll out the concept:

1) Local Certified Drug-free Races
In a pilot project, one track would modify their condition book to create races restricted to horses running entirely on hay, oats and water (or hay, oats, water and Guinness, if you prefer). Best practices for drug testing and initial incentives for owners and breeders would be developed at this time. Such incentives could be structured like something akin to a state-bred bonus system – beyond the official series of drug-free races, purses in other races could be augmented for ‘certified drug-free’ (or ’100% organic’ if you require a catchy marketing name) horses.

2) Expansion of Incentives
After working out any initial kinks on the local level, the drug-free series could be rolled out to other tracks and with a larger pool of participants, incentives for breeders would also be built into the system. In addition to the cachet of having a stallion or mare who could be marketed as a success on the track without drugs, reduced stud fees could be offered to participating mares – with a higher rate for mares who did not take part in the program.

3) International Options
As the program continues to expand, closer links with other racing jurisdictions could be forged by creating win-and-you’re-in races for major races in Europe, the UAE, Japan – perhaps even Australia and New Zealand – places where drug-free racing is already the norm. High profile international horses could also be lured over for the drug-free race offerings, so that the US racing public could get a chance to see some of those stars outside the Breeders’ Cup.

4) Full Co-operation
The long-term goal is that the Breeders’ Cup and Triple Crown series would adopt the drug-free system, with the further intent that daily racing throughout the the US would follow the same guidelines. Given the lack of centralized control in American races, a piecemeal approach seems to be the only way to get such a system in place.

There is plenty of scope for revision and modification within this proposal and it is expected that there would be problems at the beginning as well as Brass Hat-style drug positives from previous therapeutic treatments (and drug withdrawal times for such treatments would need to be standardized to avoid such issues wherever possible), but it’s clear that the current system of vague, inconsistent penalties for illegal drugs doesn’t deter their use – the notion getting rid of currently-legal drugs like Lasix doesn’t have a chance in that climate. But it can be done – enough administrators, trainers, breeders and owners need to decide they want to make it happen.

Who wants to take the first step?

Although I remain a fan of both Brass Hat and Better Talk Now, I suspect they are both almost ready to move on to Kentucky Horse Park (or a similar retirement). In any event, it should be a good race.

But back to the Derby Trial for a moment – while Silver City with Julien Leparoux will be the likely favorite, the race is also notable for featuring Gato Go Win, the horse at the center of the Jeff Mullins/Air Power controversy. One imagines things will be a little tighter around the detention barn this time around. I also like Tintim Por Tintim.

The Withers is also this weekend; while the race is now essentially a Preakness prep, check out Teresa’s great article on its history. This year’s Withers does have an interesting field, however; This One’s For Phil is coming into the race with a good record, but I will have my eye on Gone Astray. You never know who may show up to be a threat in Maryland, even if recent history does not smile upon new shooters in the Preakness.

In actual Derby news, you’ve likely heard about Quality Road’s second quarter crack by now as it’s all over the Twitterverse; all systems are reported to be go at this point, but it’s certainly a worry. It was also announced that Alan Garcia will retain the mount on Regal Ransom with Ramon Dominguez taking Desert Party. He did not seem fazed by his layoff prior to the race nor the tougher competition – it’s easy to see why he’ll be the Derby favorite in the next future wager pool. Of course, there’s always the concern lurking in the background that things did not turn out so well with owner Rick Porter’s other two grey stars by Unbridled’s Song (Rockport Harbor, who never really seemed to recover from the injury he sustained in his Remsen victory, and of course the ill-fated Eight Belles), but if he stays sound, this could be an exciting year.

Also yesterday, Evita Argentina beat the boys in the San Vincente in great style. She reminded me very much of Megahertz in her last-to-first move – I’d love to see her follow a similar career path (although as an aside, I wonder why Megahertz is being bred to stallions who are nearly a good two hands taller than she is – she’s already living proof that a tiny horse can be a strong, solid winner – but I digress). Evita Argentina was the first filly to win the race since 1947 – I’m hoping to see her in more sprints down the line, although it sounds as though her next start, possibly in the Fair Grounds Oaks, would aim for more distance.

Over the weekend, Chocolate Candy had no real trouble in the El Camino Real; the Jenny Craig-owned (and bred) son of Candy Ride will likely head to Santa Anita next, and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer seems to be taking a pleasingly old-school approach with him:

“We want to run in the Santa Anita Derby but we’ll also look at the San Felipe Stakes,” said Hollendorfer. “There are different approaches to the Kentucky Derby, but I think the fitter the horse, the better his chance to win. A lot of people go in there with fewer races but most horses that do well have a foundation under them.”

Chocolate Candy’s win earned him a Beyer of 90 (so he’s got a ways to go to get into the Old Fashioned eschelon), but that was encouraging, given that now-4-year-old El Gato Malo only managed an 85 in his win in the McCann’s Mojave on the same card.

Sticking with last weekend, Santa Teresita managed to defeat Leah’s Secret and Visit in the Santa Maria Handicap – while there was some trouble in the gate when Country Star sat down in it (she was uninjured, but scratched) which may have thrown everyone else off their game, it’s still nice to see Santa Teresita get a win in this sort of company.

Alas, the same cannot be said for poor Brass Hat, who finished eighth in the Dust Commander – perhaps it is time for retirement, but he’s bounced back from down times before. I’d like to see him take another shot first if he’s healthy and sound before heading out to pasture.

And with that, I’ll head off to continue my birthday celebrations, which chiefly include searching for a 19th-century photo that may not exist and working on other reference requests – it’s all good!

Perennial Casa Superfecta favorite Brass Hat is coming back in the Dust Commander at Turfway. Now 8, no one’s quite sure what sort of form he’ll be in after an extended vacation, but here’s hoping he can show Officer Rocket he’s still got it. El Gato Malo and Autism Awareness have yet to reach Brass Hat’s august age, but both are looking for comebacks this weekend as well.

6-year-old Leah’s Secret has skillfully avoided retirement for the time being, thanks to her Sunshine Millions Distaff victory, and she will be taking on a nice lineup of mares in the Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita. While I like Leah’s Secret a lot, I’m curious to see how Visit, normally a turf runner, takes to the synthetic track. I’ve always admired her pedigree and hope she continues to do well in the US. Bsharpsonata and Santa Teresita are also entered.

Finally, of course, there are the 3-year-olds. It seem a bit ironic that while the Sam F. Davis is finally a G3 and this year’s crop seems promising, it’s something of a shallow field this time around. It’s true there are a few so-far-undefeated entrants (Free Country, Musket Man and Top Seed), but I suspect this group is a notch below some we’ve seen already. I’d say the same for the El Camino Real Derby, which features Chocolate Candy and Axel Foley – although I could be convinced by strong performances. (I admit that I would be concerned about Axel Foley becoming a strong feature on the Triple Crown trail, since we’d have to hear his namesake music all the time). We shall see.

The Derby trail headliner actually takes place on Presidents’ Day (something I’ve only ever had as an official day off as a government employee) down in Arkansas. Old Fashioned’s long-awaited 3-year-old debut in the Southwest seems to be all systems go – and it’s hard not to like a horse (pictured) with a sense of priorities. According to trainer Larry Jones:

“When it is work time, he’s ready, but after that it’s naptime,” the horseman said. “Naptime is leave me alone time for Old Fashioned.

“Old Fashioned is a neat horse. It’s hard not to love him. Bringing him up here from Fair Grounds it was just me and him, it was bonding time. It was like I will focus on you, and you will focus on me.”

Poltergeist and Silver City seem to be Old Fashioned’s main competition – but I hope Loch Dubh makes the field as well; I’m eyeing him as the dark horse I forgot to add to my Road to the Roses stable. There’s always one (or two, or three).

I can’t say I’m bowled over by anyone yet, but a large part of my lack of enthusiasm (so far) for this crop is that many of them have been saddled with terrible, terrible names.

Spectacular Bid winner Notonthesamepage is aiming for the Fountain of Youth, Majormotionpicture is likely to return in the San Rafael, and poor Pioneerof the Nile is getting some buzz, but is stuck with that awful moniker. I’d like to see the Jockey Club ban run-on names before worrying about possible naughtiness – especially since they rarely seem capable of noting such things anyway.

One horse I do like is The Pamplemousse (Mary Forney has a nice photo of him on her site today) – even though I am not a fan of grapefruit in general, I do very much approve of this name, which I can only assume is a tip of the hat to the fine Divine Comedy b-side. (That’s certainly the only explanation that makes sense in my brain).

On the whole, however, many of the new 3-year-olds look awfully sprinty to me; former claimer Loch Dubh also fits that profile, although again, he’s got a name I actually like – no doubt because I watched far too much Hamish Macbeth in the 1990s. (For the uninitiated, the show starred Robert Carlyle as a pot-friendly policeman in a remote Scottish village called Lochdubh).

One wonders if Midshipman and Vineyard Haven heading to Dubai to train will be something of a useful distraction for Team Godolphin – it seems that construction on the new Meydan racecourse will be slowed, as both firms contracted to work on it have been canned. We’ll see how that goes.

I’m rather doubtful we’ve seen the best of this crop yet (unless we include Stardom Bound – I’m not holding her newish dubious owners against her, and I’m looking forward to her likely start in the Las Virgenes); if recent patterns hold, this year’s Derby winner has yet to break his (or her) maiden.

In the meantime, while these youngsters are figuring out where they belong, we’ve got the return of Brass Hat to look forward to. Here’s hoping he’s still got it.

Eclipse-winning mare Ginger Punch reappears in the Ogden Phipps and is giving four pounds to Spring Waltz (who, like Ginger Punch, is also trained by Bobby Frankel — so one presumes she’s the understudy), her closest rival; I also like Moon Catcher. Ginger Punch is aiming to collect her third win for the year and should be tough to beat, weight or no weight.

Then the action moves to Churchill Downs – while Curlin is the headliner (and there is more on him below), it’s a great card overall. The Fleur de Lis is the first stakes race on the card and Hystericalady, Cowgirls Don’t Cry and Peach Flambe are all short prices for a reason.

The Regret features Pure Clan heading back to turf in search of a win; she also gets a break in terms of weight as Zee Zee gets 122 pounds to her 116. Here’s hoping if she wins certain portions of her ownership group can simply graciously accept the trophy and fade into the background…but I digress.

The Northern Dancer is a return to racing for many of this year’s Derby horses: Recapturetheglory, Pyro and Visionaire are all back to see if 1 1/16 at Churchill is a little more to their liking. I’m curious to see how Pyro does, and I still really like Visionaire, who gets to carry a few pounds less than his other two Derby brethren. It should be a much better race by which to judge their abilities than this year’s Derby (or about half the Derby preps).

The Jefferson Cup is also for 3-year-olds, but this time over turf; I’m looking forward to seeing Old Man Buck again and am intrigued by Tizdejavu. Halo Najib is also in the mix.

The Mint Julep is run after the Steven Foster, so I’ll discuss it first; I like Street Sounds (who is a nice 8-1 on the morning line) even though she’s facing a tough competitor in Dreaming of Anna; Danzon is also a nice filly. Dreaming of Anna’s high weight of 123 is a full eight pounds heavier than the next highest assignment; she is giving as many as 12 pounds to some in the field. She’s classy enough to pull it off, but given her odds, I’d be betting against her.

The feature of the day, of course, is the Stephen Foster. Curlin will certainly face some adversity (layoff since Dubai, inside post, high weight, good field) but this is a chance to continue to discover just how good he really is. I will naturally be rooting for Einstein and Brass Hat to finish well, but Curlin has looked phenomenal of late — if you want to see what a real champion looks like, make sure you tune in.

In other news, were you aware there is a documentary on Lost in the Fog making the rounds? It will be premiering Saturday at the CineVegas Film Festival. Here’s hoping for a warm reception.

Finally, don’t forget to create and activate your Road to the Breeders’ Cup stable, since scoring starts tomorrow; I only happened to see it because it was on Facebook. Peculiar.
