This weekend’s Florida Derby looks a little easier with Eskenderya’s removal to the Wood Memorial; in his absence, Rule is the deserving favorite as the only horse in the field with a US graded stakes win. Handicappers quite rightly don’t like betting horses at such short prices, but they may get a break – come post time, Barbaro’s brother, Lentenor, could well be the favorite (even though it’s his first start on dirt). It’s true that Radiohead won the G2 Norfolk Stakes at Ascot as a 2-year-old, and he looked good in an allowance race on dirt, but does he really want to go much further than a mile? I suspect not at present, but I Might Be Wrong.

Things are a little more exciting in the distaff ranks (again) with Christine Daae finally stepping up to stakes competition. She’ll take on the talented Amen Hallelujah in the Bonnie Miss – perhaps they will kick off a rivalry. Many eyes will be on much-touted Venezuelan import Bambera in the Rampart Stakes; a good effort here will send her to take on Zenyatta in the Apple Blossom – but she’ll have a jinx (plus more weight than she’s ever carried) to overcome. Nevertheless, it’s a good opportunity to get a first look at her in this country – hopefully she will prove to be a star here as well.

Those disappointed by the NTRA’s epic fail last weekend can give them another shot (or enjoy yet more failure) for the Florida Derby, which they are also attempting to webcast. I’d advise outsourcing the webcast, since there seems to be too little investment in real technology (and techies) to make it happen – why not just give Randy Moss his podcast back? That should be easy enough to accomplish, and living up to limited expectations would at least be a start…

Let’s begin with a basic premise: getting a check for second is not a failure, but a non-working website is. With that in mind, let’s examine the events of the past weekend. For some reason, American racing at the highest level is hung up on success or ‘failure’ in an individual race – while this is most likely because our best horses simply do not race as often as their counterparts in Europe, Australia and Japan do, it serves as a useful reminder that we might take a longer view.

Let’s look at Goldikova’s career – it took her four races to get her first win for the year in 2008, and in her initial 2009 race (seven months after her first Breeders’ Cup Mile triumph), she finished a dismal seventh. Yet there were no calls to send her to the breeding shed or wailing and gnashing of teeth that she was past her best – she just went back to tougher training, returned to the races again about two months later and won her next three races. There was minor upset when she finished third in her prep race immediately before she came to defend her Breeders’ Cup title, but her connections simply took it as a sign that she needed the race; and, indeed, she put in another sparkling performance at Santa Anita.

Watching Rachel Alexandra’s performance on Saturday, I certainly did not see a wannabe broodmare (and I’d love to see it demonstrated that life as a broodmare is somehow ‘safer’ than life on the track for a top-level filly or mare – that certainly does not ring true anecdotally) – just a horse at sub-optimal fitness. She could easily follow Goldikova’s example and be back to her usual freakish self by May or June – and I’m pleased to see her connections are heading in that direction. While it’s a shame for everyone at Oaklawn who worked to make a showdown in the Apple Blossom a possibility, I would rather see them meet further down the line, when both are at peak fitness – although I am hopeful that Zardana will take on her stablemate, Zenyatta, in the race.

And so to Zenyatta, who is being rather overlooked simply because ‘Zenyatta wins‘ is less of a story than ‘Rachel finishes second’ – as expected, she’s still perfection personified (although it was a less ‘pretty’ race than we might normally see from her, but that’s more down to the way things unfolded). It’s wonderful to see her unbeaten streak continue (it’s churlish to argue with 15-0, unless we’re talking about Pepper’s Pride), but I know I’m not the only one wondering if the seam that opened for her on Saturday would have been found at another track – had she been running at, say, Belmont, she would have had quite a target on her back à la Smarty Jones. That’s not to say she would not have overcome it, since great horses make their own luck, but it would have been a real test for her – hopefully we’ll see her travel further afield (beyond Oaklawn and, one presumes, Churchill Downs) this year.

But before we leave Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra news, we must address the massive NTRA FAIL in their webcast of both races. One wonders what sort of traffic they were expecting if the other ten people complaining about it on Twitter could not get in – and it should have been simple enough to scale up the bandwidth in any event. After all, we were able to keep the Penn Vet server running when Barbaro was put down (despite no warning, not that we expected one) just by farming some predictable high-traffic items (e.g. photos, video) out to another server. It’s not hard. They would be wise to follow the #runserverlessbiz tweets from #SXSW – or just compare clouds and make a decision. And here’s a little more free consulting advice (I do normally charge a lot for something this straightforward, but I’m making a nice exception) – putting the video stream behind a login is a huge turnoff to casual or would-be fans. Sure, you want to gather data on users, but why not do it after they are already invested? I’m sure the stats should a huge dropoff between clicking on the ‘live’ link and actual signups – and that’s not surprising. The call to sign up needs to be somewhere else – unless the whole point of the login was to deter potential users. In that case, well done!

Check back tomorrow, when we’ll get back to reviewing the 3-year-olds, especially Odysseus, Lookin At Lucky and Sidney’s Candy…

Granted, he was only facing fellow maidens, but his finish was very nice indeed, noting especially how he pulled away on turf. While it’s hardly time to start penciling him in for the Derby, he seems to be improving with each race and we may well be seeing more of him down the line.

Now for the bad news – if you’ve spent any time around broodmares, you know things can go wrong at any time – two years ago, a friend bred six mares, got confirmation most of them were in foal, but ended up with only two foals born – and one of them died shortly after birth. Happily, the situation resolved itself last year, with each mare delivering a healthy foal – but the same cannot be said for Barbaro’s dam, La Ville Rouge, this time around. She lost the Dynaformer filly she was carrying just as we are approaching peak foaling season. Full details are forthcoming, but more often than not, it’s one of those things that just ‘happens’ – I’ve seen a mare lose a foal near her expected due date simply because she had a mild infection, and I’ve also known a polo pony mare who lost a late-term foal because she got a little too fractious with a handler and ended up damaging the placenta.

For small breeders, it can be a huge financial loss (although it’s cheaper than losing a foal that did manage to ‘stand and nurse’) in addition to an emotional one. But as in the case above, things tend to resolve themselves the following year; with a bit of luck (provided all is well with the mare), the hoped-for full sister could appear in 2011.

In the meantime, it’s certainly encouraging that Lentenor looks promising – but could he beat Christine Daae?

More often than not, once the Kentucky Derby result is in the books, it seems obvious in retrospect. Who was going to beat Big Brown? Street Sense was naturally going to win that day, and Barbaro was most assuredly the class of the field.

Sometimes, however, it’s a trickier business. Giacomo? Where did he come from? Charismatic went off as a longshot and I have yet to meet anyone who predicted Lil E. Tee would take the roses. This year fell into that more perplexing category with Mine That Bird flying by the rest of the field on the rail. It was vintage Calvin Borel, and while it was not a move he needed to make on the stunning Rachel Alexandra the day before in the Oaks, it was not unimpressive in its own right, nor was the winning time glacially slow (especially given the wet conditions). Mine That Bird’s margin of victory may not have been anything like Rachel Alexandra’s twenty-plus lengths, but it still stands as the second-largest in Derby history.

The difference with the longshot winners is that it’s much harder to place them in the racing firmament the instant they cross the Churchill Downs wire – hindsight may be 20/20, but it’s going to take a little longer this time to know when to start employing it. Will Mine That Bird take his place among previously-unheralded greats like Canonero II or fellow gelding Derby winner Exterminator? Perhaps he will fall into a middle category and be unfairly overlooked, like Charismatic – or there’s always the chance his victory was a fluke and he will be remembered with horses like Gallahadion or Dark Star, neither of whom ever won another major race.

As of now, we don’t know where he fits – and that makes the next few weeks very interesting indeed. Let’s enjoy watching the next chapter in racing history unfold.

He’s been training in Florida for the winter and the likely spot is a Gulfstream maiden special, either on dirt this weekend or turf the next.

While it’s nice to see the national mainstream media taking an interest of sorts in race, the local press is excited to have something to talk about too; however, they seem to be taking something of a more realistic approach, if their quotes are anything to go by. From Michael Matz:

“Who knows? He might be Barbaro,” said Nicanor’s trainer, Michael Matz. “He’s training well right now and I think we are doing everything the right way. Once he gets on the track, we’ll hopefully see the best he has. I know if he’s half as effective as Barbaro, we will be in good shape.”

And, in the same article, owner Roy Jackson:

“Michael said he has been doing fine in Florida, but let’s take one step at a time,” Jackson said. “We hope he has some talent, but we don’t know. If he is 50 [percent] to 75 percent as good as Barbaro was, we will have a good horse. Just remember, though, this is Nicanor, his brother. He is not Barbaro.”

…

“We have moved on from Barbaro. We don’t dwell on what happened,” Roy Jackson said. “We loved the horse and the interest in him is obviously still there. His legacy lives on in the Barbaro Fund and raising money for continued research of laminitis in horses.

Nicanor has been working in company with Rockland, a son of Smarty Jones with a few wins under his belt and he’s obviously grown into a large, well-put-together colt, but only time will tell what sort of talent he really has. As mentioned before, fine breeding, great training and early promise don’t necessarily make a great (or even terribly good) racehorse (most of Hasili’s offspring excepted, of course), and while there is certainly plenty of symbolic resonance in getting Edgar Prado in to ride, it’s unrealistic to expect too much at this point. Nicanor may well turn into a handy racehorse who will be fun to watch in his own right – let’s sit back and see what happens (and enjoy a brief pre-Triple-Crown spotlight on the sport).

(Of course, as an archivist I love the opportunity to see this level of documentation on a single horse’s upbringing, training and schedule – I just hope it’s being retained somewhere. It would certainly be interesting down the line to compare Nicanor’s details to those of the first few Secretariat offspring – or even The Green Monkey).

While there is much excitement in certain quarters over the upcoming debut of brother, Barbaro’s brother Nicanor, it’s a good idea to temper expectations with a bit of reality. Most horses never compete at racing’s highest level. Some show early promise that suggests they have what it takes – but more often than not, things don’t pan out. Let’s examine the case of another horse bred and (formerly) owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson – the once-promising filly Sweetest Kiss. They were quite high on her in 2007 (Roy, himself, expressed great enthusiasm for her at a work event and I’ve been tracking her ever since). Unfortunately for the horse and everyone’s bank accounts, she has never quite lived up to those early expectations.

Things began well; an auspicious turf debut at Laurel under the tutelage of Barclay Tagg, followed quickly by an allowance win on the Preakness undercard led to her inclusion in Globeform’s 50 to Follow list of 2007 (along with the likes of Curlin, Einstein, and Rags to Riches and Wait a While). Tougher allowance company did not seem to suit her in her next race, but she still managed to hit the board in two subsequent races with comparatively easier competitors.

2008 did not prove to be the highlight of her career; she did earn a little money at Gulfstream Park, then after another disappointing effort at Keeneland, she won her first claiming race. She was then claimed for $35,000 – and stopped winning (so far) altogether.

New owner Barry R. Ostrager (owner of Questroyal Stud in New York) first tried her at Saratoga with trainer Carl J. Domino, but she was a gate scratch in August (I don’t have details on why). He then moved Sweetest Kiss from the New York/Mid-Atlantic circuits to Suffolk Downs and into the care of trainer Michael J. Collins. She began there at the $20,000 claiming level, but didn’t get a share of any purses until her third race at the track – she finally picked up a show spot in late September, six days after her previous race. However, even sticking at the $16,000 claiming level did not seem to suit her talents; she lost her final three races of the year.

Sweetest Kiss is back to try her luck again tomorrow, this time at Beulah Park in Ohio, with a new trainer, Melinda Johnson, listed and at a new claiming price. Here are her current details:

Here’s hoping her first race of 2009 can get her back on a winning track – at least as a confidence-builder if not a money-spinner. And as for Nicanor, we’ll just have to wait and see – at least he is actually preparing for a racing debut, which is considerably further along than his older half-brother, Man in Havana, ever got in the racing game.

Update: Sweetest Kiss was scratched prior to post-time.

Bill Finley points out that sibling relationships don’t often count for much in horse racing, and uses the example of Smarty Jones’ full sister who has yet to win a maiden race. Indeed, his half bother Speedy Jones is also some way from his elder sibling’s fame – he has so far earned his connections $3320 in 3 starts, so he still has some way to go to make up for his $120,000 purchase price.

There is no guarantee that Barbaro’s brothers will shine on the track either; his 4-year-old half-brother, Man in Havana, is unraced (and is now a gelding) and his elder half-brother, Holy Ground, won a few stakes races, but nothing outstanding (although you can still breed to him for $3,500, if you are so inclined – I actually like his pedigree, but he’s not going to win any beauty contests).

By the same token, some mares just keep producing top offspring. Hasili is still the classic modern example, with Cacique, Heat Haze, Banks Hill, Intercontinental, Dansili and her current US-based runner, Champs Elysees. Her 3-year-old, Raise the Flag (by the recently-pensioned Sadler’s Wells), has one start so far, and she has a yearling Storm Cat filly (apparently, one of the last of his as well). Andrew Caulfield was impressed upon meeting the mare:

While Hasili still has a bit of work to do to match Fall Aspen (eight group/graded winners, including four Grade I winners) and Courtly Dee (seven graded winners, headed by three Grade I scorers), this extraordinary mare has a near-faultless record. Thanks to Champs Elysees‘s stylish victory in the GII San Marcos S., her first six foals have all scored at Grade I or Grade II levels, with four of them achieving Grade I-winner status. It took the great Dahlia 11 foals to come up with four Grade I winners and a pair of Grade II scorers.

I suspect Champs Elysees, just nosed out last weekend in the G2 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap, will nab a G1 win as well at some point.

Fall Aspen‘s details note that only four North American-based mares have been lucky enough to produce as many as four G1 winners (Dahlia, Toussaud, Hasili and Fall Aspen herself); one wonders if it would still be possible to get away with naming a horse Hamas, like Fall Aspen’s 1989 colt who has been a useful sire, these days.

I expect this topic to come up not infrequently as we head toward the Belmont and <st1:street style="font-weight: bold;" st="on"><st1:address st="on">Casino Drive</st1:address></st1:street>‘s chance to make it a hat-trick for his dam, Better Than Honour – not to mention the anticipation around Nicanor’s first start, which will likely be one of the most-watched maiden races in recent memory.

Finally, let’s focus for a moment on the major stallion retirements mentioned above. Sadler’s Wells made an impact on the turf before his great influence at stud – he won or placed in six Group 1 events in England, Ireland and France and was the 1984 Champion Miler in France before heading off to stud duty (and, now, a well-deserved retirement). His statistics (so far) show 272 stakes winners, including 71 G1 winners. His top offspring include Montjeu, Galileo, Alexandrova, High Chaparral and Refuse to Bend, among many others. It would seem that some want to overlook his American origins to some extent:

Such is his standing in the Northern Hemisphere, respected TDN columnist Bill Oppenheim was moved to write yesterday that Sadler’s Wells “singlehandedly restored the reputation of Europe as a place where you could stand world-class stallions after European stallion ranks had been decimated by the Americans in the 1970s and 1980s. “

By contrast, Storm Cat was less successful on the track – he only won one notable race (although his runner-up performance in the second Breeders’ Cup Juvenile was memorable) before an injury forced his retirement. Among his best foals are Giant’s Causeway, Storm Flag Flying and the notorious Tabasco Cat. Here are his statistics at this point – Storm Cat has sired 160 stakes winners, with 98 graded stakes winners (and one could argue that both stallions have been even more useful as broodmare sires).

The great success at stud of both stallions, coming at a time when numbers of mares bred to a given stallion increased exponentially (along with auction prices and stud fees), has had a definite impact on the breed; whether it’s been a positive, negative or mixed one is debatable, but there can be no argument that they’ve certainly made their respective marks. Here’s hoping they can both enjoy healthy retirements.

The next horse I recall backing was Slew O’Gold, who finished 4th in 1983. I was back in form with Swale in 1984 (and was devastated when he died after the Belmont; many hours were spent discussing conspiracy theories on midwestern playgrounds). I had Skywalker in 1985 (6th place) and was torn between Broad Brush (3rd) and Snow Chief (11th) in 1986. I liked Alysheba and Cryptoclearance (4th) in 1987, so that was another good result, and was on fire with Winning Colors in 1988.

1989, the first year I attended the Derby in person, is where it all went wrong for me — as a rather overenthusiastic consumer of the Easy Goer Kool-Aid, I was rather miffed when he finshed behind Sunday Silence; I didn’t really appreciate the history-making rivalry I’d been lucky enough to witness until some years later (the appalling weather on the day didn’t help either). I was still close in 1990, backing Summer Squall to a 2nd-place finish, but clearly my magic touch was wearing off – my 1991 pick, Hansel, was 10th. In 1992, I actively disliked Arazi and was not at all surprised to see him finish up the track, but I certainly didn’t pick Lil E. Tee either. I had no favorite in 1993 — a poor showing.

In 1994 I was back in ‘favorite’ mode, only to see Holy Bull throw in one of his few poor performances. My ‘back-the-filly’ fallback didn’t help much with Serena’s Song (16th) in 1995, and even the return of my one-time crush, Chris Antley, didn’t help Louis Quatorze (26th) in 1996. I had nothing for 1997, liked Artax (13th) the following year, but was pretty fairly about Charismatic going into the 1999 Derby. I was happy to see Chris Antley back again, finally with a win on a horse I’ve always felt was underrated (especially since he was by my 1990 pick, Summer Squall), but he wasn’t my firm favorite at post time as I was having an indecisive year.

2000 was the year of Fu Peg hype and I wanted no part of him. My pick, The Deputy, finished well up the track in 14th. I recall being wary of Point Given due to the excessive puffery surrounding him, but I can’t claim to have had the foresight to have picked Monarchos (although I very much enjoyed Jim Squires‘ book about him). Perfect Drift rewarded my belief in him by finishing 3rd behind War Emblem (although I clearly picked the horse with more long-term racing value). I was swept up in the Empire Maker tumult in 2003, but I also chose Peace Rules – at least I was in the money with both.

I finally hit my stride again with Smarty Jones in 2004 – I picked him in January that year and never wavered. I’m still not entirely convinced that Giacomo won the 2005 Derby (I much prefer his brother, Tiago) since clearly Afleet Alex (3rd) should have, and of course I picked Barbaro. I had nothing much last year since the Street Sense build-up put me off – I backed Hard Spun and Nobiz Like Shobiz, but did have a few bets that featured the eventual Derby victor (as well as Curlin). Clearly, I’ve neither gained nor lost much by either jumping on or avoiding prohibitive-favorite bandwagons, which suggests that I have no need to do it this time around either. Given this year’s field (and my difficulties in cheering for Rick Dutrow — I’d love Big Brown if he were trained by just about anyone else), I’ll be looking for a little value – specifics to come after the post position draw.

Beyond the Derby trail, Chelokee makes a welcome return on Friday in the Alysheba on the Oaks undercard (and I’ll have more Oaks thoughts after the Derby draw as well) and it’s nice to see that Big Truck and Cowboy Cal are running for charity. Also of note is the news that Terlingua, dam of Storm Cat, was put down on Tuesday at the age of 32.

Did we mention that Eight Belles and Proud Spell have a parrot?
